Who do You Say Jesus is?

N.T.#547 "Who do You Say Jesus is?"

Luke 9-Part 4

LET IT GLOW

What has happened so far in this chapter? So far in this chapter Jesus sent His disciples out to preach the Gospel and heal people in the Galilean area. Herod wanted to meet with Jesus and He didn't. There was a crowd for dinner-feeding of the 5,000 men. There was quite a lot going on, wouldn't you say?

We still have Peter's confession, the Transfiguration, a question of who would be the greatest in Jesus' kingdom, and 3 excuses of followers at Caesarea Philippi.

Jesus is going to explain to His apostles the need for the Messiah to suffer, die, and rise again. (verses 18-22) With a change of scenery and setting, Jesus went for a solitary prayer time. His 12 were never far away, though.

What was the rumor mill saying about Jesus? Jesus asked two direct questions, to His guys,:

  1. Whom say the people that I am? (verse 18)
  2. But whom say ye that I am? (verse 20)

What were the answers to the first question? People said Jesus was:

  •  John the Baptist back from the dead; (verse 7)
  • Elijah,;
  • and old prophets;
  • few thought Him to be the Messiah.
It was a sad truth, so there was still a lot of work to be done. People were looking for a political figure to recapture the land for Israel, the Jews.
Then Jesus made it personal.

As to the answer to Jesus' second question, only Peter spoke up and identified Jesus as "The Christ of God." (verse 20)

I like what Matthew reported in 16:16-Peter's confession was "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God."

What an open confession of Jesus being deity. Have you made such a confession?

LET IT GROW

The Christian faith goes beyond knowing what others believe. It requires beliefs for ourselves. We must all decide for ourself who Jesus is to us.

One day every knee will bow before King Jesus, and every tongue will confess Him as Lord. It is so much better to do it now. And to confess Him before people so He confesses us before the Heavenly Father.

Is Jesus your Lord and Master or just another good man? Is Jesus your Savior, or just another good prophet? Is Jesus The Risen One or just a good teacher?

Jesus is so loving, good, kind, forgiving, trustworthy. Please ask Him to be your Savior, admit your sins and confess them, if you haven't yet.

LET IT GO

May we be Your witness today, Lord Jesus.
