Luke 9
LET IT GLOW
Each year as I prepare for Vacation Bible School, I prepare places for us to visit, too. As director, my heart is for children to experience Jesus' love through us and to hear the Good News-salvation through Jesus only. Jesus sent His twelve out, too. How were they to prepare?
He had just healed the woman with the issue of blood and a 12-year-old girl from the dead. The twelve had observed, listened, questioned, and learned, but Jesus instructed. The 12 probably took care of Jesus' physical needs and arranged the details of His travel so He could concentrate on teaching. Here was King Jesus sending out his chosen men, followers, if you will.
Jesus considered it time for His trainees to start practicing. It was a mission of two-fold purpose: proclaiming the kingdom of God and healing, along with casting out demons. Jesus gave the guys divine power, dynamis, with divine capabilities to accomplish impossible feats. His divine authority, exxousia, gave them the right to carry out the Lord's mission. (verse 2) (Swindoll)
According to Swindoll, Jesus' specific instructions for His disciples' journey can be summed up with:
- Travel light and trust God to provide as they proclaimed the Gospel. Take no extra tunic, bread, money, or overnight bag.
- Toughen up and stay focused, with a tender heart and tough hide. If people rejected the Son of God, surely they would reject His witnesses. When that happened, shake off the dust from your feet, as Jews did whenever leaving Gentile soil.
Keep in mind that there were no Hilton's or Holiday Inn's, no cafes or local stores, no busses or extend cab trucks. The guys were on their own trusting God for their provisions and needs.
Our Great Commissions is to go and tell about our Savior, and to make disciples, teaching what Jesus taught, showing Jesus' love.
LET IT GO
Open our eyes to those in spiritual need, Lord Jesus.
Use us to share what an awesome Savior You are!
