How Are You Serving Others?

N.T.#552 "How Are You Serving Others?"

Luke 9-Part 9

LET IT GLOW

For a while now, our church has been providing a Wednesday night meal for free. I have been helping by pouring drinks into cups. It seems like a small thing, but I get joy from serving others in that way.

Jesus delivered a man's only child from demons. While the people were amazed at the mighty power of God, the disciples were discussing the pecking order in Jesus' new kingdom. What office would they hold?  Who would be the greatest? Jesus knew what they were thinking, so He filled them in:

And He said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in My name receiveth Me: and whosoever shall receive Me receiveth Him that sent Me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great. (verse 48)

Greatness in Jesus' kingdom is achieved by humility. A child is too small, too weak, too helpless to be great. Do we want to serve those kind of people? Whenever we do, we should serve them with no expectation of reward in return.

Jesus is our ultimate example of One helping the helpless. He suffered our penalty for sin, receiving all who trust in Him, and giving us eternal life. The way up in the kingdom of God is to serve others as though they were kings. (Swindoll)

LET IT GROW

We are to serve others because of our relationship to the King, not because of a person's power, rank, or ability to benefit us. Treat them as though they were kings. Now that is totally opposite from the world's ways. But it is Jesus' way.

In the kingdom of God, authority is delegated for the purpose of service. We are to go to Him, constantly seeking His will through His Word, expressing our needs through prayer, and relying on His strength by the Holy Spirit. (Swindoll)

Are we caring for and valuing those with the lowest social standing in culture because they can do nothing for us in return? To welcome a child would be to welcome Christ and the Father. Our care for others is our greatness in God's eyes. Especially when we care for the helpless, needy, and poor are we being like Christ.

LET IT GO

Is there anything preventing us from serving those kind of people?

If so, then we need to let it go, put on an apron, and serve.
