A New Heart and a New Spirit

O. T. #1890  "

Feb. 26, 2021 "A New Heart and a New Spirit"

Ezekiel 18

But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right, ... (verse 5)

LET IT GLOW

A proverb was going around Judah that children suffered be the sins of their fathers. (Jeremiah 31:29) The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge. (verse 2) Jeremiah even wrote to the Jews in exile to straighten them out according to what God said. God had had enough of this nonsense.

Ezekiel gives them a answer, in verse 4, Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

Three hypothetical cases illustrate this principle in this chapter:

  1. A righteous man will live by his righteousness (verses 5-9); but if he has a violent son, that son will certainly die for his own evil (verses 10-13).
  2. If this evil man in turn has a son who does not follow his father but does what is right, he will certainly live. (verses 14-17)
  3. His rotten father, however, will die for his own iniquity. (verse 18)

The person who sins is the one who will die. (verse 20)

All individuals have an equal responsibility to God. He deals with us individually.

The people of Judah believed they were being punished for the sins of their ancestors, not their own. This was not true. We can suffer from the effects of sins committed by someone else's sins. However, we can't us their mistakes as an excuse for our sins. Each person is accountable to God for their own actions.

Paul tells us in Romans 1:17 that the just shall live by faith. I found something interesting as I looked up the meaning of this word in the Greek language. Just (tsaddiyq) means lawful, righteous (man). It is the same word for righteousness, found in Matthew 5:20.

Next time we will discover what makes a person just and righteous. Ezekiel tells us in verses 5-9.

Are we considered a just and righteous person? Are our deeds just and right as we deal with others? Are we just living by faith?

LET IT GROW

On the other hand, some of the people of Judah used the blessings of God as an excuse for disobeying God. They thought that because of the righteous ancestors, they would live. But God told them they would not; they were the evil children of righteous parents, and would die. (verses 5-13)

In verse 31, God tells the exiles to Caste away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

If anyone returned to God, repented of their idolatry and immorality, that person would live. (verses 14-18) They needed a new heart and a new spirit. They would be a remnant saved to worship God and be a witness to the pagans.

Do we know anyone who needs a new heart and a new spirit? Only Jesus can give it.

LET IT GO

Our friend who was a pastor used to sing this song: Only Jesus paid the price for me. Only His love could set me free. Nobody else could open heavens door. Just Jesus and nothing more.

Dear one, do you believe in Jesus as your Savior? He is the only way to get to heaven when you die. Have you trusted Him and asked Him to forgive your sins? He will and is waiting.

Eagles and Tree Branches

O. T. #1889  "Eagles and Tree Branches"

Feb. 24, 2021

Ezekiel 17

LET IT GLOW

I told this story previously, but some may not have read it. In our backyard, we had a huge pecan tree that had been there as long as I can remember. (I am living on my childhood farm.) As a girl, I loved to climb to the middle of it and pretend to be queen over my kingdom that I overlooked. The grandchildren of my parents enjoyed climbing it, too. But as time went on, large branches became split off of it in storms. Eventually, the long trunk fell over. It continued to be fruitful for a few years, lying on the ground. It was a sad day when we finally decided it was time to cut it off. (The remaining large branch lay on top of the fence keeping the cows out of the yard. Although, I have a few circles of it as a keepsake.) Well, I said all of this to say that a sprout came up in the stump. I had to get a picture for it so reminded me of Isaiah 11:1. What an illustration the Lord had provided.

You will recall that God gave Ezekiel three parables. The first one was found in chapter 15 and was about the useless vine. Then in chapter 16, the parable was about the adulterous wife. Now in chapter 17 we read about the third parable which involves two eagles. Before we get into the doom and gloom, there is good news for Judah and her kings. It is found in verses 22-23.

Only God can give true hope. In Isaiah 11, He said that a shoot would come from the stump of Jesse in Israel. This tender sprig was Jesus Christ, the Messiah. He kingdom would grow and become a shelter for all who come to Him. This prophecy was fulfilled in Jesus. (Application Study Bible)

The Messiah would grow out of the dry tree left after the wipeout of Judah. Its remnant would prosper and be preserved for this purpose. The highest branch of the high cedar refers to David (high cedar) from whose royal line Jesus came. The Messiah bore spiritual fruit and boughs while here on earth. The disciples spread the gospel over 2,000 years ago and it is still growing, spreading through generations that salvation is through only Jesus. (MacArthur Bible Commentary)

Then, when Jesus returns to reign as king over His millennial kingdom, it will be on the high mountain of Jerusalem. (verse 230 Folks, when we visited Jerusalem, we had to go up onto the mountain on which it sits. I do like it when prophecy is accurate.

A tender one in verse 22 is a sprig/sprout, a rod and a Branch, a righteous Branch, and clearly the Messiah. We read about Him is Isaiah 4:2 and 11:1, Jeremiah 23:5 and 33:15, as well as Zechariah 3:8 and 6:12.

Folks, is our faith rooted in Jesus? Is He our branch for spiritual nourishment and growth? One day the trumpet will sound and He will return to earth to reign as King of kings and Lord of lords. Are we ready?

LET IT GROW

Just yesterday morning I saw an eagle perched in a tree in front of our house across the field. However, it was not sitting on the top branch like usual, so I wasn't for certain the bird was an eagle. So I had to go get my binoculars to make sure it was. But when I pulled the curtain back and saw his white head and tail feathers, he must have seen me and flew off. What huge wings they have. (keen eyesight, too) Little did I know eagles were going to be mentioned in the next chapter lesson. Another illustration from my Lord Jesus. He is good like that!

Go back to the beginning of this chapter and find the two great eagles. The first one represents Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon. The second eagle was Egypt. They were the great empires during that time in history.

What were some of the events that happened in connection to this parable?

  1. Neb's first transplants were King Jehoiachin and many of those Jews exiled to Babylon with Ezekiel, where they prospered. Jehoiachin only reigned as king of Judah for 3 months. (verse 12 and 2 Kings 24:8-16)
  2. Neb made Zedekiah a puppet king in Judah. (verse 13 and 2 Kings 24:17)
  3. Egypt attracted Zedekiah, so he made an alliance with them. Jeremiah warned the king not to do this, for he had already made a covenant with Neb. (verse 17)
  4. Zedekiah broke his covenant with Nebuchadnezzar and thus with God. (verses 15-19)
  5. Zedekiah would die in Babylon and his troops would be defeated. (verses 20-21) He only reigned 11 years as king of Judah, being their last one.

An oath must be honored. As children of God, we must keep our oaths, whether in financial or contract form. When we do, it honors our God. Even if it was made unwisely, we must complete it.

Is Jesus our branch, our vine? Are we His church, His bride? Are we faithful in keeping our vows?

LET IT GO

May we be found faithful to our God when Jesus returns or raptures out the church.

May we keep our promises, vows, contracts, and commitments so we honor God.

Are You Decked Out?

O.T. #1888 "Are You Decked Out?"

Feb. 24, 2021

Ezekiel 16

LET IT GLOW

Here is the second of three parables Ezekiel spoke of to the exiled Jews in Babylon (elders). God called it like He saw its. He likened Jerusalem to:

  1.  an abandoned baby adopted by God. This baby was a dirty and filthy illegitimate child (the city of Jerusalem). It was as though its parents were the pagan Amorite and Hittite of Canaan. It was like an infant thrown into the open field because no one wanted her. (verses 4-5)
  2. a young woman of beauty. (verses 6-7)  Jerusalem became marrying age and God chose her to be His bride with a covenant-marriage. He clothed His bride in the finest clothing and jewels, decked out. Decked means adorn. She became royalty (beautiful crown) and her fame spread among the nations. (verses 6-14)
  3. an adulteress, unfaithful, and a prostitute of idolatrous idols. ((verses 5-34) Sexual graphic images are written in those scriptures.
  4. having a sin-sick heart. (verse 30)

So what is the good that came out of all of this?

Yet I will remember the covenant I made with you when you wee young, and I will establish an everlasting covenant with you. (verse 60)

And I will reaffirm my covenant with you, and you will know that I am the LORD. (verse 62)

Folks, have you made a promise to follow Jesus, no turning back? Then, did you drift away from your relationship? Good news-Jesus still loves you and wants you to return to Him.

LET IT GROW

Verse 63 says (NLT), You will remember your sins and cover your mouth in silent shame when I forgive you of all that you have done.

Jesus is the everlasting covenant that God made with us and with Jerusalem and His people the Jews. The Mosaic and Abrahamic covenants will be complete when they believe Jesus is the Messiah and Savior.

LET IT GO

Be decked out in the robe of Jesus' righteousness.

May we be adorned with His love.

Wear the crown of a child of the King Jesus.

What Kind of Fruit Are We Producing?

O. T. #1887  "What Kind of Fruit Are We Producing?"

Feb. 23, 2021

Ezekiel 15

LET IT GLOW

I really enjoy eating grapes in the wintertime for a snack. They are sweet, nutritious, and low calorie. However, usually within a luscious cluster is at least one bitter grape. Either it is not ripe or is overripe. Ooo, that one is immediately recognizable and is spit out. but the rest is mighty good this time of year.

In the next three chapters there are three parables which God gave to Ezekiel to share. Today's chapter features a vision of the vine-grapes. A useful vine grows and bears much fruit. Israel was intended to be a vineyard producing much fruit. Israel was to reflect the love of God for His obedient people. They were to demonstrate the fruit of the Spirit as found in Ephesians. Isaiah spoke of Israel being the Lord's vineyard.

In John 15, Jesus said that He is the vine and His Father is the husbandman (gardener), and we are the branches. When we stay connected to Jesus, then we bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing. (verse 5b) When believers remain in Jesus' love, we will obey His commandments and are filled with joy overflowing. then we will love others and meet their needs.

Are we sharing love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, faith, and forgiveness today? Those are the fruit of the Spirit we are supposed to be exhibiting as we are connected to Jesus. The gardener God lifts us up, encourages us, and motivates us with His Word and Spirit and others. Often He sends trials and challenges to prune us so we grow in our faith and produce more fruit.

Are we producing fruit? What kind of fruit are we producing? Is it bitter or loving sweetness? Is it a sour disposition or a kind one? Is Jesus our source of producing good fruit for God?

LET IT GROW

This parable speaks about a useless vine. There are some questions:

  • How does a grapevine compare to a tree?
  • Is the vine's wood as useful as the wood of a tree?
  • Can its wood be used for making things, life pets to hang up pots and pans?

We find the answer in verses 4-5. No, it can only be used for fuel, which burns too quickly. Vines are not a good source of fuel, so they are useless before and after being put into the fire. They are not strong enough to be good for making furniture, usually.

So the people of Israel were useless to God because of their idol worship. Jerusalem became a wild and empty vine not producing fruit. Israel was a fruitless and useless vine of no value. Israel was set apart to bear sweet and loving fruit, not sour grapes. There was nothing else for God to do but to burn their cities. He used the Babylonian army to achieve His judgment. Israel was not a witness to the heathen and pagan nations who worshiped idols, for because just like them.

Are we becoming like those unbelievers around us in the workplace, community, or church? Or are we outstanding fruit showing others what a relationship with the True, Living God is like? It is our choice.

If we Christians do not remain in Jesus, producing fruit, then He will sever us from the vine as useless branches. Disciplined or removed, taken onto glory, as a dead vine is gathered into a pile to be burned. god the gardener may take it away from the ground by lifting up the branches and casting them into the fire.

LET IT GO

Jesus, You are my vine. Keep me connected to You as my source of joy, love, forgiveness, kindness, goodness, and faithfulness.

Prune away what does not honor You, Father.

Faith-Living in Difficult Times

O. T. #1886  "Faith-Living in Difficult Times"

Ezekiel 14-Part 4

LET IT GLOW

Why do people die young? Why does snow and freezing temperatures cover us? Why are some people cripples? Why does misfortune come to some and not others? How is it that evil people prosper? Why does cancer eat away the body of people? So many questions we may have unanswered. Only God may know the answers, so we trust His judgments and plans that are for our good and His glory. Job was one man who suffered so much, yet God says he was righteous. How did that happen?

We have been looking at the righteous men, Noah and Daniel. Today, we will look at the third righteous man that God mentions in verses 14 and 20 of this chapter. It is Job.

The LORD said that His servant Job was a perfect and upright man, one that feareth God, turned away from evil, and there was no one like him on earth. (Job 1:8) What a way to be described by God!

Perfect means pious, perfect, plain, undefiled, upright.  Righteous refers to just, lawful.

It was not their own deeds that made those men righteous. but by the imputed righteousness of God. (Falwell)

It was by faith that those three accomplished much; their remaining faithful to their God. Job lost so much during his time of testing of his faith. He lost his ten children, way of making a living (cattle, sheep, oxen, camels), and his health. In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly. (1:22)

We describe Job as being a patient man, but I don't think he was, for those answers he gave to his so called friends that condemned Job. I think he endured those tragedies by faith. His pride got in the way. In the end of the trials, Job confessed that he knew nothing, only God did. It was after Job prayed for his pharisaic friends that God gave Job twice as much as he had before. (Job 42:10)

Have you noticed that Job is not mentioned in the roll call of faith? (Hebrews 11) However, Noah became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. (Hebrews 11:7) Daniel declared that the LORD our God is righteous in all His works which He doeth. (9:14)

My conclusion is that Job did what was right in all his business dealings and how he treated others. He had faith in God and lived it out, not just when it was easy, but in the difficult times, too. How are we living in our difficult times? Are we remaining strong in our faith?

LET IT GROW

Would God consider you and I righteous? Let us look into the Scriptures.

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. (Matthew 5:6)

In Matthew 5:20, Jesus said, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:20)

For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth. (Romans 10:4)

For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. (Romans 5:19)  The one is speaking about the sinless Jesus Christ shedding His blood unto righteousness, so we could become righteous through Him. (Romans 5:17)

for whosoever shall call upon the name of the LORD shall be saved. (Romans 10:13)

Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference. (Romans 3:22)

For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. (Romans 10:10)

The Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith. (Romans 9:30)

And if Christ be in you, the body is dead, because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. (Romans 8:10)

... even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. (Romans 6:19)

Anyone who trusts in Christ as his sin bearer, in fact, is granted a righteousness that is not his own-the righteousness from God based on faith. (Philippians 3:9) (Tony Evans)

Friend, it is through faith in the blood of Jesus Christ that we are made righteous before a Holy God. I say that is a reason to shout!

LET IT GO

Thank You Jesus for being the way we can be righteous before Holy God. Such love!

Thank You that it is by faith, not of works or being of Jewish heritage that we can be a child of the King.

How my heart wants to sing, Jesus is mine!

Please Holy Spirit speak to all hearts who come to read this post and give them faith to believe in Jesus as their Savior. Please encourage your children who are going through trying times.

Righteousness

O. T. #1885  "Righteousness"

Ezekiel 14-Part 3

LET IT GLOW

Noah could not save his generation from the Flood, even though he was a righteous man who obeyed God. Even if Noah was in Jerusalem, he could not deliver the Jews there from the destruction of their city and God's judgment. (verses 14,20)

In those two verses, God also mentions Daniel. (We will study his book next.) Daniel was taken hostage to Babylon, where he became high up in Nebuchadnezzar's kingdom. His service continued into the Persian Empire. Daniel's writings were historical for the Jews as to the events that took place there. Even though Daniel endured persecution, a lions den, he remained a righteous man. Daniel was used by God to interpret the king's dream and interpret the visions he had for the future. He was a faithful prayer warrior, although he could not save his nation from exile.

What got Daniel put in the den with lions, was the King Neb building a gold statue for his people to worship. (He thought of himself as a god.) Daniel refused to bow down and worship the idol and we know where that got him. However, good did come from Daniel's faithfulness to God. (God rescued His servant Daniel and kept him alive.) King Neb eventually did come to his senses after he lived like an animal for a year, insane:

Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise, exalt, and glorify the King of heaven, because all His works are true and His ways are just. He is able to humble those who walk in pride. (Daniel 4:37)

Do we praise, exalt, and glorify the King of heaven, King Jesus?

LET IT GROW

In Daniel 9:14, he declares ...the LORD our God is righteous in all His works which He doeth: for we obeyed not His voice.

Righteous (tsaddiya/tsad-deek') means just; lawful.

Do we declare that our God is righteous in all His works?

Even when God gives us snow, snow, snow, and minus temperatures, He is righteous in all His works.

Will You cover us with Your righteousness, for ours is as filthy rags. (Isaiah 64:6)

LET IT GO

LORD Jesus, You are Righteous.

Wash me and I shall be whiter than snow, Jesus.

Are You Righteous?

O. T. #1884 "Are You Righteous?"

Feb. 18, 2021

Ezekiel 14-Part 2

LET IT GLOW

Friend, are you like me, surrounded by deep snow and cold outside? I look out the window and finally see a ray of hope-sunshine! What a welcomed sight after 4 days of this weather in the south. I know the northern states have fresh snow now, too. Hang in there, spring is coming. Are you like me and could use some hope from scriptures today?

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. (Hebrews 10:23)

Wait on the Lord; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord! (Psalm 27:14)

This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand. (1 Samuel 17:46a) The young boy David said that while standing in front of the giant Goliath. His focus was on his God, not what he was facing. We know this happened as God used His power in a small rock to bring down the Philistine giant that defiled the God of Israel.

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (Philipians 4:13) We know all those hardships Paul faced for the cause of Christ, to spread His Word and salvation.

Sometimes we just need to be still before the Lord and allow Him to give us wisdom and strength to face our giants.

LET IT GROW

Remember those elders who came to Ezekiel? Those hypocritical elders among the exiles in Babylon, that harbored idols in their hearts pretended to seek a word from God. (verses 1-3) Maybe they wanted to know when their captivity would end or some other good news. God had some news for them alright. Ezekiel's fourth message told of judgment in Jerusalem which was coming. God called for repentance and turning away from their idols. (verse 6) We, too, must guard ourselves from idols (1John 5:21). We know that God is a jealous God, so there is no room for competing deities in our lives. (Exodus 20:5) When we repent, we are agreeing with God against us, admitting that we sin and ask His forgiveness. Then we will be people of God and He will be our God. (verse 11)

Those men were looking for some hope for Jerusalem and those Jews who remained there. Could such a faithless nation be spared from famine, dangerous animals, sword, or plague? Even the faith of Noah, Daniel, and Job could not prevent this. These three were the greatest examples of faith and godly favor; their righteousness could not protect such a wicked land.

Noah lived among a people of great sins, yet he remained faithful to his God. He obeyed God and believed that God would save him and his family. Noah became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. (Hebrews 11:7c)

But without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him. (Hebrews 11:6)

Then the Lord said to Noah, "Come into the ark, you and all your household, because I have seen that you are righteous before Me in this generation. (Genesis 7:1)

In the Hebrew language, righteous, which is the word tsaddiyq (pronounced tsad-deek'), means just, lawful.

The people did not listen to Noah's warning of the Great Flood and repentance, so they were not rescued, but died. Noah received a covenant that God made with him-never to flood the whole earth again.  Noah's family followed him into the Ark and was saved. What a godly influence Noah had in his home!

Our life is to be a contrast with the standards of the world as an example of a righteous person? Others are watching us. Do not underestimate the positive effect that your obedience will have upon those close to you.  Are we choosing to live just and uprightly before God no matter how those around us are living?

Jesus lived righteously before His Father. He never sinned. We can count on Him to help us lived righteously, too.

LET IT GO

Jesus, our righteousness is as filthy rags. Will You clothe us in Your righteousness?

The LORD is Righteous, Jesus Christ.

Grow our faith so it is pleasing to You and our actions show we are righteous.

To You be the glory forever.

Grace

O. T. #1883  "Grace"

Feb. 17, 2021

Ezekiel 14

LET IT GLOW

I hope everyone is able to stay warm during this cold, cold, winter. In my area, we have had a lot of snow and temperatures down to -16, which is unusual for us. Since I was going to stay inside this week anyway, I guess it was the week for me to have a stomach bug. The Lord is good and I am able to eat now and keep it in me, although the cramps are hard to endure. But enough of my situation.

Here is today's devotional found in Sarah Young's, Jesus Calling, though I changed it to speaking to you and me:

Jesus is the Risen One who shines upon us always. We worship a living Deity, not some idolatrous, man-made image. Our relationship with Him is meant to be vibrant and challenging, as Jesus invades more areas of our life. Do not fear change, for I am making you a new creation, with old things passing away and new things continually on the horizon. When we cling to old ways and sameness, we resist the work of Jesus within us. He wants us to embrace all that He is doing in our life, finding our security in Jesus alone. It is easy to make an idol of routine, finding security within the boundaries we build around our life.

Today's chapter speaks of idol worship by the Jews in Judah and those sent in exile in Babylon. You know, most of us probably consider our self as not worshiping idols. That may be true, but when we spend more time, energy, and heart desires for things, whether material or otherwise, then it can become our idol. God requires us to have not idols and only worship Him.

It is easy for us to criticize the Israelites for worshiping idols when they so clearly needed God instead. But we have idols in our hearts when we pursue reputation, acceptance, wealth, or sensual pleasure with the intensity and commitment that should be reserved for serving God. (Life Application Study Bible)

Folks, we have been studying about Israel's worshiping idols now for some time-Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel. Are we taking the message seriously? Sometimes we need to stop and do some soul searching. Maybe we should ask God if we have any idols in our life.

Help us Jesus to love You most of all and more than anything in this world.

LET IT GROW

Shall we jump into our chapter? What is going on is that the elders in exile came to Ezekiel to seek counsel of the Lord. Were they finally convinced that judgment was coming on their brethren still in Jerusalem? Do they wonder if God would spare those left in Jerusalem for the sake of a few righteous within it? Back in Genesis 18:32, the Lord promised to not destroy Sodom if ten righteous were found there. (But they were not found.)

However, those elders were not motivated by a pure heart. God saw their hearts and asked them to repent of practicing idolatry and to turn from them. The elders were startling the fence, so to speak. They would make the appearance of worshiping God making regular visits to the Temple to offer sacrifices. But they were insincere. We can understand why God had warned them what was ahead if they did not change their hearts' devotions. He alone is to be worshiped and praised.

How did the Lord god answer those elders?

Repent, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations. (verse 6)

...and ye shall know that I am the LORD. (verse 8)

... that they may be my people, and I may be their God. (verse 11)

When an individual repents of their sins, God receives them in grace, no matter how vile their heart is. (Liberty Bible Commentary)

So, friend, do we need to repent of idolatry and love god with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength?Do we need the grace of God today?

LET IT GO

Jesus, take my heart and forgive me for spending more time with the box called television than I spend with You. I have wasted so much time and my life sitting there. Change me, mold me, make me into what You want me to be. Make me a new creation again.

You alone are God Almighty, gracious to all who come to You in repentance.

You alone are LORD, the Self-Existent and Eternal One.

Praise be to the Lord Jesus Christ, our God and Savior!

Evil Will Not Reign

O. T. #1882 "Evil Will Not Reign"

Feb. 16, 2021

Ezekiel 13-Part 3

Therefore ye shall see no more vanity, nor divinations: for I will deliver My people out of your hand and ye shall know that I am the LORD. (verse 23)

LET IT GLOW

The false prophets covered their lies (wall) with whitewash-a clean-looking and pleasing covering or front. such superficially can't hold up under God's scrutiny. He can always see what's underneath the surface.

Few of the Jews wanted to hear what Ezekiel had to say, for his message warned of God's impending judgment. They were on the brink of an invasion that would soon destroy Judah and its people, then send others into exile. They wanted to listen to prophets who declared soothing words, tell them that Ezekiel was wrong and soon the nation would experience peace. (Billy Graham's devotional, Wisdom for Each Day)

In the Bible, the gift of prophecy was given to women as well as men. Miriam (Exodus 15:20), Deborah (Judges 4:4), and Huldah (2Kings 22:14) were considered prophetesses. But women mentioned here are more like the medium of 1 Samuel 28:7, and they are condemned for discouraging the righteous (Ezekiel 13:22). (Life Application Study Bible)

We have no need for prophetesses today, for we have the written Word of God to tell us what the future holds.

What is the promise God gives us in our key verse above? Deliverance. It was true after the 70 years for Judah and Israel. Also, it will be fully true during the Messiah's thousand year reign. God will bring an end to sorcery and false prophecy (Micah 3:6; Zech. 13:1-6) Amen! Evil will be no more during that time, in heaven, and in the new earth.

Folks, we need to take seriously that there are evil spirits, demons, and their followers still in our world today. How pertinent it is that we Christians grow stronger in faith in our God and memorize His Word. That is how Jesus contented with Satan.

James 4:7 tells us how to get rid of the evil around us: Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

As we submit to God, we recognize our weaknesses, admit our sins and pride, then submit to God as our ultimate and final authority. (Romans 12:1) Draw near to God is to come into His presence with prayer, praise, and obedience daily. We must cleanse our hands and purify our hearts. (James 4:8) Resist the devil by submitting to the King of kings, Jesus Christ. Proclaim the truth in God's Word, which we know. Then the devil will flee from us.

LET IT GROW

Today we are focusing on verses 17-23. God condemns such women that that used magic charms and magic veils in practicing witchcraft. They advertised good luck charms for the wrists, but were used to ensnare the people in idolatry. Apparently, this is how they made their living.

Although women are rebuked by Isaiah (3:16-4:1) and Amos (4:1-30, this is the only OT text where false prophetesses are mentioned. Sorcery was practiced mainly by women. Jezebel is called a false prophetess in Revelation (2:20) and we know what happened to her. It is likely that these sorceresses employed all these items (charms, veils, handfuls of barley, and bread) in their divinations, hunting down people for their advantage. (verse 20)

Keep in mind that God will deliver us, in this world or in the next. We must warn others to stay away from magic, the horoscope, trinkets, etc.

LET IT GO

Jesus, You alone are all powerful.

We submit to Your will, Your way today.

Protect us from evil and temptations.

Keep our eyes on You and Your love in our heart.

Whitewashing

O. T. #1881  "Whitewashing"

Feb. 15, 2021

Ezekiel 13-Part 2

You have not gone up into the gaps, neither made up the hedge fro the house of Israel to stand in the battle in the day of the LORD. (verse 5)

LET IT GLOW

The false prophets did nothing to develop a strong social, spiritual, and moral structure in Judah.

They did not:

  •  repair the breaks in the walls around the nation;
  • fill in the gaps on the walls to keep the enemy out, for they became an occult used by Satan;
  •  make up the hedge of spiritual protection so Israel could stand in the battle in the day of the LORD. (verse 5)
  • tell the truth of the up coming judgment, but told lies, whitewashing over the truth;
  • reveal visions from God, but followed their own spirit and mind.

A hedge refers to make a wall, enclosure, to fence up.

Those false prophets in Judah should have made intercession for their people, to turn away the wrath of God; They should have built up their faith and obedience in Almighty God. But they were not praying prophets nor interested in heaven. Their business should have been preaching the truth and advising repentance and reformation for the people, but they were striving to make their people happy.

Psalm 91 speaks of God being our refuge, fortress, deliverer, shield and buckler. He will not allow evil to befall on us, plagues on our household and will answer when we call upon Him, be with us during trouble, and will deliver us, then honor us. He will satisfy us with long life and salvation. This scripture is filled with good promises. I encourage you to read it today. Pray for a hedge of God's protection around our loved ones.

LET IT GROW

Untempered morter is mentioned four times-verses 10. 11. 14, and 15. This is like whitewash, a false hope for Israel given by the false prophets. There would be no peace among the people. Like builders that use whitewash to hide mistakes, those prophets would give false hope to the people that they would not be conquered. However, God saw what they were doing. His judgment was coming so they would know He was God, the LORD.

May we not cover up our sins, but confess them. Then we will have the peace that passeth all understanding.

LET IT GO

May we tell the truth today.

Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven.

Beware of The False Ones

O. T. #1880 "Beware of The False Ones"

Feb. 12, 2021

Ezekiel 12-Part 4

LET IT GLOW

It's a winter wonderland outside our house. Ice is on the trees and weeds. I can say how beautiful it is because I am staying inside a warm house. Yet, temperatures are going to be below freezing for a week. It probably is in your area, too. We know our Lord is in control, so let's rejoice in being alive today, for this is the day the Lord has made.

Before we get into the gloom and doom, shall we look into the Word for some hope?

I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go. (Genesis 28:15)

I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you. (John 14:16-17, NASB)

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:13)

Rejoice and exult in hope; be steadfast and patient in suffering and tribulation; be constant in prayer. (Romans 12:12, AMP)

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. (Psalm 46:1)

Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why have you become disturbed within me? Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him for the help of His presence. (Psalm 42:5, NASB)

"In Him we live and move and have our being." As some of your own poets have said, "We are His offspring." (Acts 17:28)

LET IT GROW

Well, here we go, jumping into this chapter with both feet. God's Word came to Ezekiel again so he could prophecy against the false prophets, pseudo prophets, and prophetesses in Judah.

Judgment was coming for those false prophets:

  1. they would not be in the council of God's people;
  2. their names would be wiped from the register of Israel/record books; (Ezra 2:62)
  3. the would never return to the land (20:38).

What were the false prophets doing to warrant such judgment?

  • Their prophecies were out of their own hearts, not out of the Word of God spoken to them.(verse 2) Therefore, they were inventing their own prophecies.
  • They follow their own spirit and imaginations, so they have seen nothing at all in visions from God. (verse 3)
  • They are like foxes in the desert, who only destroy. (verse 4) They are like jackals digging in the ruins. (NLT)
  • They told lies and made false predictions, giving people false hopes. (verse 6)
  • The Sovereign LORD did not speak to those false prophets, so He will raise His hand against them. (verse 9)
  • They gave a false peace and hope for God's chosen people. (verse 10)

We can see what the problem was-they did not warn of an upcoming destruction of Judah and Jerusalem, calling the people to repent of their idolatry and immorality.

Folks, we should beware of those who do not preach nor teach the Truth, God's Word. There are those who only tell of good things, how to get along with others, think positively, be self-reliant, and how wonderful we are. The thing is, we are all sinners in need of a Savior, Jesus Christ. Our good works cannot get us to heaven. Only admitting with God that we sin, asking His forgiveness, and trust in Jesus that is the only way to heaven and the Father. Have you done so, sweet one?

LET IT GO

Jesus, You are our joy, peace, and strength.

May we only proclaim the Truth, Your Word and Jesus.

Please bless all who come to read this with salvation, faith, hope, peace, and the love of Jesus.

What He Says, He Will Do

O. T. #1879  "What He Says, He Will Do"

Feb. 11, 2021

Ezekiel 12-Part 3

For I am the LORD: I will speak, and the word that I shall speak shall come to pass; it shall be no more prolonged: for in your days, O rebellious house, will I say the word, and will perform it, saith the Lord God. (verse 25)

LET IT GLOW

Do you ever doubt that you heard right or understand what God is saying to you? The people of Judah seemed to have that problem when Ezekiel prophesied to them, telling what God said to them. Read the key verse above.

What do we learn from this verse?

  • God is the LORD, Jehovah, which means the self-Existent or Eternal.
  • If He says it, it will happen, for Jehovah's Word comes to pass.
  • There will be no more delays nor shall it be prolongs.
  • The Lord, Adonay (Ad-o-noy') which means my Lord in sovereign, strength, power, will fulfill His Word in their lifetime, not in the distant future.
  • When He says it, He performs it.

When God says it, I believe it, and that settles it. the Word of God is truth; Jesus is Truth; He keeps His Word, therefore, I believe what He says in His Word.

Such grace and mercy of God when we do not get punishment for our sins. It was unbelief and false security that led Judah to believe it would never happen. Since we don't know how much time we have to live, everyone should get right with God now.

It is appointed for people to die once-and after this, judgment. (Hebrews 9:27)

See, now is the acceptable time; now is the day of salvation! (2 Cor. 6:2)

Dear friend, are you ready for eternity? Jesus has made the Way. No one comes to the Father except through Him. Is Jesus your Lord?

LET IT GROW

False prophets told the people of Judah what they wanted to hear (no doom coming) or gloom would not come in their lifetime. (Jeremiah 14) However, the prophet warned them the sword and famine would come. And it did come. When God's hand used the enemy as His rod of correction, only a few in Judah were left. The delay of 6 years, some commentaries say, gave the people a false impression that judgment would never come. But it came in their lifetime as fulfillment of the godly prophets predictions. After all, God gave them the visions, so of course it would happen as they predicted.

The people had a proverb, The days are prolonged, and every vision faileth.

But the Lord God said that proverb would cease and be used no more; they would say, the days are at hand, and the effect of every vision. (verse 23)

LET IT GO

Jesus, give us faith to believe that what You say, You will do.

Bring the Baggage and Burdens

O. T. #1878  "Bring the Baggage and Burdens"

Feb. 10, 2021

Ezekiel 12-Part 2

LET IT GLOW

We can always use some encouragement, right? Even if your path is smooth now, there may be a mountain around the next bend. We must be prepared for it.

Have you considered God's Book as a storehouse of promises? Some promises were uniquely historical, while others are conditional (we must do our part first). Yet, other promises are still ours to count on. Are we standing on the promises of God today or are we outside the premises? [Resource: Day by Day With Charles Swindoll]

Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord... is the Rock eternal. (Isaiah 26:4)

Are you worrying and anxious today? There is never a crisis so troubling that God cannot bring peace in the midst of it. Nothing is too difficult, too troubling, or too fearful for our God. Nothing!

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made know to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6)

So we are told to pray, submit to God's will, give thanks for our mountain, and make our requests. Then the peace of God will guard our heart and mind through Christ Jesus. (90% of our fears do not happen)

Swindoll gives us a formula for this:

Absence of worry + Prevalence of prayer + Spirit of gratitude = Peace of God

Friend, let's you and me keep walking by faith. After all, Gray hair is a crown of splendor. (Prov.16:31) It will all work out in God's timing and His way, so don't worry about it. Let God carry it. (That's what I am telling myself.)

Efficiency is enhanced not by what we accomplish but by what we relinquish. That will make your load lighter, because they will share it with you. (Exodus 18:22)

LET IT GROW

Getting back to our chapter, we last learned that Israel was a rebellious house (bitter). Now Ezekiel is given two tasks as sign of actions to deliver God's message:

  • Ezekiel was to live among the rebels who had eyes but refused to see, and ears but refused to hear. (verse 1)
  • He was to pack his bags, bring the baggage, and go into exile as his fellow exiles in Babylon watched. (verse 3)
  • He was to do this twice, once in the daytime, only the second time at night by digging through the wall and taking the bags out through it. Those were items that an exile could carry as they left home to go somewhere else. (verse 4-5)
  • As they watched, Ezekiel lifted his pack upon his shoulders and walked away into the night. He covered his face so he could not see the land he was leaving. (verse 6)
  • The second tine he was to cover his face to symbolize that those going into exile would never see the land of Israel again. (verses 4-6)
  • Ezekiel obeyed. (verse 7)

What was the meaning of this? Those actions contained a message for King Zedekiah in Jerusalem and for all the people of Israel. It would soon happen to them, for they would be driven into exile as captives. Zedekiah left the city at night through a hole in the wall, taking only what he could carry with him. He was captured and carried into Babylon. He saw his son killed, then the king's eyes were blinded, so he never saw Babylon and died there, never returning to the land of Israel. His servants and warriors were scattered, but a few were spared from death by war, famine, or disease. This happened so they could confess all their detestable sins to their captors, and they would know God is the LORD. (verses 12-20)

Folks, are we carrying unnecessary baggage in our life? That can include: worry, anxiety, lack of peace, financial burdens, busyness, lack of compassion, etc. If so, then we need to give them to Jesus. His yoke is light. Pray, give thanks. Trust Jesus to work things out, then watch Him do it. Give Him the glory.

LET IT GO

Help us shake off these heavy chains, for Your are our Redeemer, Jesus.

You're an overcomer; stay in the fight until the final round. You're not going under, because God is holding you right now. You're an overcomer. Don't quit, don't give in. You're an overcomer!

God, Your are victorious, so we give You the glory.

Ears and Eyes

O. T. #1877  "Ears and Eyes"

Feb. 9, 2021

Ezekiel 12

But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him. (1 Corinthians 2:9)

LET IT GLOW

Reading our key above, seeing Jesus in all His majesty and splendor, as well as the beautiful heaven, which await those who love Him is indescribable.

Now, Tony Evans says this is not in reference to heaven but to God's work in the life of the believer; that it indicates God can help believers understand things that they cannot learn through natural means. He reveals these things to us by the Spirit. (2:10)  This is called illumination. This is the work of the Holy Spirit, through the Word of God, within the mind of a Christian that causes him to supernaturally learn, understand, and apply the things of God. It becomes personalized to us. The believer understands the meaning and application of the Scripture in the midst of his own experience.

Our key verse comes from Isaiah 64:4, which is a little different in that it uses the word waiteth in place of loveth. In 65:17, God says, For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.

How wonderful it will be, sweet friend, when there will be no more tears, pain, harsh words, nor evil and sin! Do I hear an amen to Jesus?

Billy Graham said in his devotional, Wisdom for Each Day, "The Bible tells us that we have two sets of eyes. We have physical eyes-but we also have spiritual eyes. with one set we see the physical world around us, while with the other we discern the spiritual truths God has set forth for us in His Word. When we come to Christ, He comes to live within us by His Holy Spirit-and He then opens our spiritual eyes to God's truth. This is one reason why the Bible is important, because God uses it to help us discern His truth."

Reading verse 2 in our chapter, those exiled with Ezekiel would not hear nor see the truth that Jerusalem would be destroyed. God was longing for the Jews to repent of their sins, but they would not because of their hard hearts and rebellion.

LET IT GROW

Rebellious means bitter, bitterness, in the Hebrew language. In the Webster Dictionary, says it means opposition to one in authority or dominance; defiance or resistance.

God calls Israel a rebellious house five times in this chapter. They had heard the truth and the consequences of her disobedience many times, but the unregenerate heart invariably twists the truth or rejects it. It was an act of grace, God longing for them to repent. ((The Liberty Bible Commentary)

They are not seeing and hearing the truth of their situation. Rebellion and bitterness of their captivity had blinded their eyes and stopped up their ears. In spite of that, God's will was going to be carried out using the Babylonian army. The purpose was so Israel/Judah would know God is the only God to be worshiped.

Those rebels made their choice willfully to be blind and deaf to God's Word. How about you and me? Are our hearts, ears, and eyes open to what God has to say to us in His Word? Faith comes by hearing the Word of God.

LET IT GO

Help us accept what You have to say to us, Jesus.

Keep our ears open to the Holy spirit speaking to us today.

May our spiritual eyes be open to see where You are working and then join You.

And keep our hearts tender and surrendered to You, Sweet Jesus.

A Renewed Spirit and Heart

O. T. #1876  "A Renewed Spirit and Heart"

Feb. 8, 2021

Ezekiel 11-Part 4

Therefore say, Thus saith the Lord God; Although I have cast them far off among the heathen, and although I have scattered them among the countries, yet will I be to them a little sanctuary in the countries where they shall come. (verse 16)

LET IT GLOW

Are you weak and worried? We need to accept our circumstances just as they are, for God is sovereign over everything. Are you analyzing and planning, wearing yourself out? Instead, let thankfulness and trust be your guides through this day. By focusing on Jesus, we allow His Peace and Presence shine upon us. The best way to get through this day is step by step with Jesus. Remember, the path we are on is leading us to heaven. Ask the Spirit within you to order your day and control your thoughts, for the mind controlled by the Spirit is Life and Peace. (from Jesus Calling, by Sarah Young.)

Such good words for us to absorb into our spirit. He is still God, even when....

Oops, I almost skipped over today's verse, but we need to wrap up Ezekiel's vision. During the 70 years of the captivity of the Jewish remnant was scattered and the Temple was destroyed in Jerusalem. There was no place of worship and sacrifice for the believers. They numbered over 50,000. Do we sometimes think like Elijah that we are the only believers in Jesus at work, in our community, our family? We aren't, dear one.

God says, "There will be a remnant who will see Me. When they do, I'm going to be a little temple, a little sanctuary, and they will be able to approach Me." This is God's arrangement during the time the temple was destroyed. Daniel and many others were among those who sought the LORD during this period. (The Prophets-Ezekiel, by J. Vernon McGee)

In the Hebrew language, sanctuary means a consecrated thing or place, especially a palace, sanctuary (whether of Jehovah or idols) or asylum; holy place; hallowed part.

Folks, do we stop and consider that we are a little sanctuary? If we are saved and the Holy Spirit dwells within us, then we are His sanctuary, where Jesus dwells and makes us righteous with His righteousness. (Ours is filthy rags.)

Hebrews 8:10b says, And I will put My laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: And I will be to them a God, and they shall be to Me a people. (also found in Zech. 8:8)

This is the better covenant with better promises, which has exceeded the Moses' Law-Jesus Christ. Jesus is our high priest who offered His own blood once in the holy place for eternal redemption for us. He offered once to bear the sins of many. (found in chapter 9 of Hebrews)

Paul said in Romans 12, I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God. (verses 1-2)

Isn't it amazing that the God who created everything with His spoken Word loves us and wants to dwell with us sinners!

LET IT GROW

After all of that vision of Jerusalem, Ezekiel was returned to Chaldea. (verse 24) He spoke to the exiles about all the things the LORD had shown him. (verse 25)

When the people return to their homeland, they will remove every trace of their vile images and detestable idols. And I will give them singleness of heart and put a new spirit within them. I will take away their stony, stubborn heart and give them a tender responsive heart, so they will obey My decrees and regulations. Then they will truly be My people, and I will be their God. (NLT verses 18-20)

Ezekiel was able to tell the people why God was judging them. Even though the people did not would not listen to him, the prophet continued to be a sign unto them, and faithfully sharing God's Word to his people. Do we continue to share God's Word with others?

LET IT GO

Make my life, a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to You.

Renew our minds today so we can be a living sacrifice unto You, Lord Jesus.

Jesus, keep us faithful to share Your Words of Truth, for You are the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

Please bless all who come to read this today with a renewed spirit, heart, and zeal for You.

May Your Light, Life, Joy, and Peace flow freely through us.

Gracious and Compassionate

O. T. #1875  "Gracious and Compassionate"

Feb. 5, 2021

Ezekiel 11-Part 3

LET IT GLOW

I have another bone density test scheduled next month. It is done in order to check how dense my bones are now because they have been less than what they should be for years. Therefore, I have been taking a monthly pill in order to stop the deterioration and calcium tablets for about 10 years now. The thing is, I don't want to fall and break any bones, especially now that I am getting on in years. (My aunt once broke her spine just from rolling over in bed.) So I endure the headache I get after taking it. And I don't want to get any shorter than my present 4'10".

What are we doing to keep our spiritual growth maturing and faith renewed today? Maybe you are like me and could use some Scriptures of encouragement now. So I thought I would look through a devotional book and find us some:

You are a God of forgiveness, gracious and compassionate. (Nehemiah 9:17)

The LORD God helps me, therefore, I am not disgraced. (Isaiah 50:7)

Do not fear, for I am with you; do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. (Is. 41:10)

I will hold you by the hand and watch over you. (Is. 42:6)

The LORD longs to be gracious to you, and therefore He waits on high to have compassion on you. (Is. 30:18)

His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:22-23)

The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, to the person who seeks Him. (Lam. 3:25)

I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. (John 10:10)

Stand firm in the Lord. (Philippians 4:1)

Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary. (Galatians 6:9)

By grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God. (Ephesians 2:8)

Have you noticed a common thread here? Grace and compassion, who can use more? Isn't He beautiful and gracious when we need it and don't feel we deserve it. Friend, Jesus is there with you and here with me. Luke 1:37 says, Nothing is impossible with God.

LET IT GROW

Here at the end of chapter 11 we read of Ezekiel's vision ending with a return to the reality of Jerusalem's sin and the Spirit's final departure from the city, leaving the people without God's presence and protection. (verses 21-23) The warning of Ichabod even applies to the church: when it abandons Christ, its lampstand is removed (Rev. 2:5) (The Tony Evans Bible Commentary)

So the glory of the LORD went up from the midst of the city, and stood upon the mountain which is on the east side of the city. (verse 23)

God's glory and presence left the Temple and stood over the Mt. of Olives, where Jesus wrestled with His flesh and Spirit. Then He finally surrendered to do His Father's will. Today, this special place is fenced in and tourists can only gaze into the garden. It is located high on a hill, east of the Temple and walls of Jerusalem. Huge, old olive trees many years old still grow there. Needless to say, it is a quiet and solemn place.

How long do we spend in serious prayer, folks?

LET IT GO

There is nothing better than You Lord Jesus.

You are so gracious, compassionate, and beautiful.

Pleas bless all who read this with salvation and encouragement.

Are You Content?

O. T. #1875  "Are You Content?"

Feb. 4, 2021

Ezekiel 11-Part 2

Therefore say, Thus saith the Lord God: Although I have cast them far off among the heathen, and although I have scattered them among the countries, yet will I be to them as a little sanctuary in the countries where they shall come. (verse 16)

LET IT GLOW

Are you content with where you are, the things you have, the situation in which God has placed you? Confession time. As I write this, I see myself. I am so guilty of not being content. I got my eyes on the wrong things, folks. I wasted hours looking for a newer and better house and not being content with what God has provided for the two of us. (It's a hundred year old small farmhouse that needs repairs.) So I ask myself, what can I do to make it not so crowded with my "stuff"? Reality hit me right in the heart. Perhaps I am to be a missionary right where I am located. New neighbors are moving in around me. That is why I wanted a change. Instead of being resentful, I should be happy to make new friends. Wow! Have I ever failed! How about you?

Hebrews 13:5 says, Let your conversation be without covetousness;  and be content with such things as ye have: for He hath said: I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

Even though the warning of the sword, fire, destruction, and famine came to the Jews concerning them and Jerusalem, God gave them hope. After all of that occurs and 70 years of captivity had passed, God said they would know He is the LORD, Jehovah (Self-Existent or Eternal).

Now, look at our key verse above. What is God saying He will do when it is time?

  • Ezekiel and his fellow exiles were actually a remnant of Israel that God said He would preserve. this is the first promise of restoration in this book.
  • Although He cast them off and scattered the Jews among the countries, He will gather them back together. And they would worship only God Jehovah together. They are the faithful ones.
  • God would be a sanctuary to those Jews in captivity, the righteous remnant, and give them spiritual protection. (verse 16)
  • When God gathers and assembles His people, He will give them the land of Israel. (verse 17)
  • They will remove all the detestable things and all the abominations among the ruins of Jerusalem and the once-was Temple site.
  • He will give the returnees one heart, a new spirit within them, and will remove the stony heart out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh. (verse 19) One heart indicates a unanimous singleness of purpose. No longer will they seek many gods; they will be content with God.
  • God will do this so they will walk in His statutes, keep His ordinances, and do them. (verse 20)
  • They shall be His people and He will be their God. (verse 20)

The land of Judah enjoyed its Sabbath rest all the days of desolation until 70 years were fulfilled. (2Chronicles 36:20b)

It took the Jewish returnees, some 42,360 of them, 4 months to go 900 miles back to Jerusalem. They went through hot and dry desert land. Zerubbabel led the first group. They rebuilt the Temple after a 14 year struggle. Adversaries kept them from completing it. Then Ezra the priest led 3,508 in the second group of returnees some 59 years later. He established worship of God in the Temple. Lastly, Nehemiah led his small group of returnees 13 years after that. He led the rebuilding of the wall around Jerusalem. What a mission for the missionaries.

Dear one, have you received a new heart? Not a physical heart, but a spiritual one. Jesus can give it to you if you have not. Just believe He is the Son of God who came to take away your sins. Ask Him to forgive you of your sins. He is faithful and just to forgive and cleanse you of all unrighteousness. (1John 1:9)

LET IT GROW

Those that worshiped idols were killed by the sword of the Babylonians. Remember, they did not have the mark of the believers on them and were not spared. (chapter 9)

If you are a Christian, let me ask you this. Is Jesus Lord of your life? Have you offered Him your life today to be used for His glory?

LET IT GO

I am with you and for you. You face nothing alone-nothing! Fix your eyes not on what is seen but on what is unseen. (Jesus Calling, by Sarah Young)

What is Your Need Today?

O. T. #1874  "What is Your Need Today?

Feb. 3, 2021

Ezekiel 11

LET IT GLOW

Anyone in need of some courage and encouragement today? We can find it here in this chapter.

Why was God giving Ezekiel all these visions? He gives the answer in verses 10 and 12:                  And ye shall know that I am the LORD.

  • Sometimes we just need to stop and be reminded of this. God is our Creator (El Eyon), who made us and all things, thus controls everything. Are we His spiritual child, full of faith and trust?
  • He knows our needs even before we ask Him to meet them, for God is our Provider (Jehovah Jireh) and sees all. do we believe He can take care of our unpleasant situation?
  • God is All-Powerful and All-Sufficient (El Shaddai), to whom nothing is impossible. Are we loving God, even when we can't see the good in our hurts and troubled times?
  • He is the Lord Who Heals (Jehovah Rophi), that can heal our deepest woes and afflictions, using them to accomplish His purposes for His glory. Are we patiently waiting for the Lord's timing to bring healing?
  • In our spiritual warfare, He is the one who will be our banner (Jehovah Nissi), that fights for us, strengthens us weak ones. He can break down the strongholds that have us captive.
  • He is the Lord our Peace (Jehovah Shalom), that gives us peace as we go through valleys.

What gifts our God gives to us! Dear one, are you in need of Christ to rise up and be one of those in our life today? He is Immanuel, God with us. He is only a prayer away. Ask and ye shall receive; seek and ye shall find; knock and it shall be opened. Thank You Jesus! How faithful You are!

LET IT GROW

There is a prophecy against the rulers that still remained in Jerusalem. Jerusalem had not yet been destroyed, although most of the Jews had been carried away into captivity. King Zedekiah was still on the throne. The rulers were in rebellion against God, as well as against the king of Babylon.

What was God saying to them?

  • They are the flesh and the city is the caldron (a pot; to boil up). They compared the people dumped out into the pot by the sword of the Babylonians. The leaders thought they would be safe.
  • Six years later the exiles would mourn thousands of Jews that died in Jerusalem.
  • Judgment would be from God and not Babylon. Judah's secret sins were an open scandal in heaven. The 25 evil leaders would be a part of it.

The city gate was where merchants and politicians conducted business, so the 25 men may have represented the nation's rulers who led the people astray. They were not secure from another attack like they said. They thought no harm would come to them. We should care more about what God thinks, for He sees everything. Our secret sins are not a secret to Him. We need to confess our sins and ask God to help us overcome them.

LET IT GO

God forgive our nation for its sins. We kill unborn babies, allow homosexuals to be sharing their sinful lifestyle, we have stopped prayer and Bible readings in the schools, and we allow false religions here.

Ezekiel 10-Part 2

LET IT GLOW

As a review, what was God seeing take place in the future for Judah? The Jews, in all their immorality and idolatry, thought the Lord was not seeing what they were doing. Also, they though He had forsaken them. (8:12) Ezekiel saw in a vision that this was not true. Because He did see all the abomination they were doing in His Temple. the glory of the God of Israel left the Holy of Holies and moved toward the threshold. (9:3) Then in chapter 9, the angelic man clothed in linen (I think it was Jesus) went through Jerusalem marking the faithful remnant who were crying over their beloved city. Six angelic men were sent throughout the city killing those without the mark. (Apparently only angels could see that mark.) As the land was filled with blood and perversion, the Jews again said that the LORD had forsaken the earth and seeth not. (9:9)

Now, in chapter 10, it was a second time that Ezekiel saw the cherubims over the throne of sapphires (like a chariot). I think it was Jesus seated there, for the Son was told to take coals of fire in His hand and scatter them over the city. We know this vision came true that the prophet wrote when Jerusalem was destroyed by fire (of the Babylonians) in 586 B.C. It was actually fire from the Lord in His judgment.  (2 Kings 25)

Again we read of a chariot similar to that in the vision in chapter 1. There were wheels, eyes, and faces.

God has never had to come back to pick up something He has forgotten. He doesn't need to deviate from one side to the other; He never detours. He goes straight forward today toward the accomplishment of His purpose in the world. (J. Vernon McGee's book, The Prophets, Ezekiel)

Since the faces described are figurative, they picture the deity of Christ in the Gospels:

  • the face of a cherub-pictures the servanthood of Christ in Mark;
  • the face of a man-pictures the humanity of Christ in Luke;
  • the lion-kingship of Christ, the lion of Judah in Matthew;
  • the eagle-pictured the deity of Christ in John. (McGee)

Christ shed His blood that we might have eternal life-He made the Mercy Seat and provided the blood that covers our sins. Hallelujah! Those are the reason to love Him more, folks.

LET IT GROW

I have heard that when the glory of God departed from the Temple, Ichabod was written over the door. I can't find it, though. Here is what I did find:

In 1Samuel 4:21, we read of the priest Phinehas, son of Eli, was killed by the Philistines and the Ark of the Covenant was captured. His wife had a child and she named him Ichabod. Ichabod means no glory, in Hebrew.

The glory of the Lord will return to the Temple when Jesus returns as King during His Millennial reign. (43:1-12) God is working out His plan. Are we ready? Dear one, do you know Jesus as your Savior?

LET IT GO

Jesus, You see all, know all, and have it all planned.

Use us to share Your salvation while there is time.

Thank You for providing eternal life for us.

When the Glory of God is Removed

Ezekiel 10

LET IT GLOW

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who is and was and is to come.

Folks, I am so unworthy to say anything about this chapter and the events Ezekiel saw in his vision. It is a humbling picture of the Shekinah glory of God, Jehovah.

Look what Paul wrote in Romans 9:26b, There shall they be called the children of the Living God.

And in verse 23, Paul said, And that He might make known the riches of His glory on the vessels of mercy, which He had afore prepared unto glory.

Not only does God call Jews to salvation, but also us Gentiles. We have obtained righteousness by faith in Jesus Christ. (verse 30)  Glory to God in the highest! May these words draw us closer to Him and be to His glory.

Earlier, in chapter 1, Ezekiel saw in a vision a similar vision. The glory of God was revealed to him in a whirlwind, the cherubim, the wheels, the firmament, and the rainbow. All of this was written so they shall know that I am the Lord, which is a phrase that appears 70 times in this book.

What do we learn about God's glory?

1.  Keep in mind, the glory of God was over the Mercy Seat in the Holy of Holies of the Temple in Jerusalem. God's presence was with Israel/Judah while there.

2. In another vision, Ezekiel saw how the Jews were worshiping idols in God's Temple. Thus, the glory of God could not remain in such a wicked place, so it moved above the threshold. (9:3)

It was only the first step in a sad journey of abandonment by a holy God who could no longer live among a sinful people. (Tony Evans)

The throne of glory was empty and it became a throne of judgment.

3. The glory of God moved with the cherubim off the threshold to the eastern gate of the Temple. (verses 18-19)

4. Finally, in 11:22-23, the glory moved out of the Temple to the top of the Mount of Olives. This is where Jesus prayed before going to the cross, "Not my will but Thy will be done." It is a grove of olive trees, high up on a hill, located just above the Temple area. When we visited it, I was so humbled that I had to bow on my knees and pray with tears there. To be in the same place that the Savior had knelt in prayer where He sweet drops of blood in such tension and stress was overwhelming.

What can we take away from this? God removed His glory because He will not and cannot share His glory with another. The idols and sins of the people had driven Him away. Today, God will remove His glory and His blessing from our lives unless we serve Him faithfully with honest and pure hearts.

LET IT GROW

Friends, God must be first place in our lives.  There is good news, in chapters 40-48, the prophet sees the future restoration of Israel and her glory in the kingdom. In chapter 43, the glory of God returns to the Temple. (The faithful remnant will rebuild God's Temple after 70 years of captivity in Babylon.)

Jesus Christ is the glory of the Lord. We are to glorify God in our bodies (1 Cor. 6:19-20), magnify Him in all we do (Phil. 1:20-21), and with our good works (Matt. 5:16). We must be careful to not grieve the Spirit (Eph. 4:30). God will never leave us (Eph. 1:12-14). However, sin can result in our not bringing Him glory.

It is time to ask God to look into our hears and to reveal if there is something in our life that is not bringing glory to Him.

LET IT GO

Jesus, thank You for being our Mercy Seat for our sins.

Pleas forgive us when we fail to give You glory.

And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men. (Colossians 3:23)

Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. (Col. 3:2)
