Luke 9-Part 3

LET IT GLOW

How strong is your faith today? Would you give your lunch so Jesus could feed thousands?

And when the day began to wear away-I like that phrase Bro. Luke used in verse 12. Jesus and His disciples were planning on a quiet camping-under-the-stars night with reflection and conversation. Although, it didn't turn out that way. A crowd had gathered along the hillside to hear Jesus preach. Suppertime was approaching and folks would be getting hungry or already were. Who counted the crowd? Guess it doesn't matter. There were 5,000 men, which didn't include women and children. (Matt. 14:21) So there could have been 15,000 or more sitting and listening to the Master.

By now, you should recognize this as the feeding of the 5,000. Don't overlook the boy willing to share his 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish. Did he know Andrew? Had he happened to come along, sat down to listen to Jesus for a few minutes, then intended to continue his journey or errand for mom? So many details are not told to us. Apparently, they are not important. There was just a few loaves and fish the boy gave in faith. The Lord Jesus wanted it and he gave it. Everyone was filled.

Do we give what we can afford or do we give in faith? If the Lord wants something of ours, do we give or hold onto it?

In His hands God multiplied it, and it became a huge feast for the crowd. Everyone in the crowd ate and there were 12 baskets left over. (Billy Graham)

These baskets (kophinos) were wicker baskets used by travelers to carry enough provisions for a journey of 2 to 3 days. (Swindoll)

I don't think the disciples expected such a miracle. They didn't say, "You've got this Jesus." It was the unexpected that Jesus did. Isn't just like our Jesus!

LET IT GROW

Luke only gives us a summary of this account in 6 verses, while John did so in 14 verses.

Jesus blessed it, break it, then multiplied it. Isn't that like our Savior? He breaks our strong will in order to use us. He is our source for our needs. Jesus is our Sufficient King who owns everything because He created it. He has an abundant supply.

Let not our lack of resources blind us to God's power. (Life Application Study Bible)

LET IT GO

Thank You Heavenly Father for giving us what we need.

Show us the needs of others so You can meet them through us.

Glory to God in the Highest!
