Psalm 139
Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising Thou understandest my thought afar off.
Psalm 139:2
LET IT GLOW
We all have things we wish we never said, thought we had never thought, done things we wish we could change. We may try to keep secrets of our past from folks, but there is one who knows all about it-God. Do you believe that He knows all things, everything? We find out David did as we read his psalm today.
Be prepared folks, we are going to camp out the next few days in this chapter for 24 verses. David has a lot to teach us, needless to say. It will be worth it. It is good, friend, so continue on with me.
In The MacArthur Bible Commentary, John MacArthur gives us an outline of God's character in this chapter which is fitting:
- God's Omniscience (verses 1-6)
- God's Omnipresence (verses 7-12)
- God's Omnipotence (verses 13-18)
- David's Obeisance (verses 19-24)
Now, let's look at the first six verses.
Webster's Dictionary defines omniscient as having infinite awareness, understanding, and insight; possessed of universal or complete knowledge.
In layman's terms, God knows everything, is all-knowing.
Hannah said so in her prayer of praise and dedication of Samuel because God earlier answered her prayer for a son, whom she would give to the Lord as long as he lived to serve God.
In 1 Samuel 2:3c she says... for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by Him actions are weighed.
I could spend hours researching the scriptures which state all that God knows, such as the hearts of people, but I am not going to do so.
Just take a minute to consider all that God knows-the strength of the sun, the position of the planets, how many stars are shining, how much the earth weighs, how the bodies of animals, insects, and humans function, what is in the depths of the seas, our thoughts and intents of the hearts, who is going to heaven, when Jesus is returning, secret things. He knows everything that happened down through the ages, what is going on today, and all about the future. and it will happen as He has planned.Whew! Those are only a few to consider about the knowledge of God.
Will we seek His will for our lives, trust Him will everything? Do we desire to serve this all-knowing God?
LET IT GROW
God desires to have a relationship with His creation of people. Here are some thoughts from Liberty Bible Commentary and Jerry Falwell.
What is David acknowledging about God as he communes with his God?
- He has searched me and known me. (verse 1) Searched originally meant to dig, as for precious metals. We search for God in His Word, but He already knows us.
- He knows every move David made, us too. (verse 2)
- He compassest (sift, winnow) David's path, lying down, and his ways. (verse 3) God is intimately aware of all our ways, that he has sifted our seconds to insure our well-being.
- He knows every word we speak and our thoughts before we verbalize them. (verse 4)
- He is behind us recording our sins and before us with grace blotting out the remembrance of them. We can't turn back and escape Him, for He is behind us.(Spurgeon) (verse 5)
- The fact that God knows everything about David and us surpasses his comprehension, and even his imagination. (verse 6)
Thank You Father that you know all things and knew I would sin and need a Savior.
Thank You Jesus for enduring all things so You could provide me with salvation that is free to me.
You are so gracious and merciful!
I am trusting You with my future, for You hold all things in Your hands.
You are good, so very good to me and my family.
Praise be to God, Jesus the Son, and Holy Spirit.
