Psalms 23-Part 5
Thou prepares a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Psalms 23:5
LET IT GLOW
When I grew up, Mom could put on a spread now. There would be abundance of meat, whether a turkey or ham or a roast; a half dozen vegetables, salads, homemade rolls, all sorts of pies and cakes for dessert. It was like eating at a buffet. She would spend all morning in the kitchen preparing a feast. Noting was made in haste or hurry; all was from scratch, not a quick mix. Usually, we had it during holidays or family get-togethers. Mmm! No one left hungry either. Guests felt special, too, being invited to partake of such a meal.
Today's verse speaks of a table, spread out; a meal.
Preparest refers set in a row, arrange, set in order.
The Lord has arranged a prepared meal spread out on a table and in the presence of our enemies. Is this spiritual food for our soul, spread out in the Bible?
Are we feasting daily on the Word?
LET IT GROW
The shepherd would carry a small flask of oil to anoint the scratched faces of sheep that had to find their food among the thorns and thistles. The anointing oil of a Christian's head today means the filling of the Holy Spirit. (Falwell)
Samuel anointed David with oil, symbolizing God's Spirit, favor, and blessings were upon him.
A well-set table, the festive oil, and a brimming cup moves us beyond surviving trials as in verse 4; it gives us joy, victory, and abundance.
Jesus celebrated the Passover with His disciples the last time before His death and resurrection. One day His believers will celebrate with Jesus at the marriage table as His bride, the church.
Are we living the abundant life?
LET IT GO
Daily feast at God's table, His Word.
Ask the Holy Spirit to anoint me for doing His will.
