What Drives Out Fear?

O. T. #1701  "What Drives Out Fear?"
May 29, 2020
Isaiah 59-Part 4

LET IT GLOW

In the coming millenial kingdom, Jesus will defeat the adversaries and enemies and rebellious of His people. Everyone will fear (to reverence) God. It is more than an emotional feeling, but applies to worship, respect, and honoring of our God. The entire world will worship the Lord-from the east and the west they will come to Jerusalem. He will come like a raging flood tide driven by the breath of the LORD. (verse 19) He is in control of the situation. His sovereignty intervenes in the affairs of mankind to deliver His people.

Billy Graham wrote this in his daily devotional book, Wisdom For Each Day:
What is your fear? Do you fear the future? Do you fear life's burdens that sometimes seem almost overwhelming? Do you fear death? Most of us fear everything except God-yet it is God whom we should fear most of all!
Jesus can put an end to fear for all who trust in Him. He is the answer to any fear you have. After all, God's power is greater than the powers of evil, and "neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future... nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 8:38-39).
There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear. (1John 4:18)

Isn't Jesus that perfect love that drives out fear?

To the enemies of God, Christ comes as a terrifying conqueror who will sweep them away like a rushing stream (verse 19). But to those who turn from transgression, Christ will come as Redeemer (verse 20).  (Tony Evans)

He is coming for those who have turned from their rebellion to Him and to the faithful ones.
Will you be a part of this new kingdom?

LET IT GROW

What does the LORD say to us in verse 21?
  • He gives us a covenant, which He keeps.
  • His Spirit will not leave us.
  • The Words that He gives us will no leave us either.
  • Those Words will be on our lips, our children's lips, and our grandchildren's lips forever.
God gave Joshua words to speak in 1:8, the Abrahanic covenant as they entered the Promised Land. Now the covenant He makes with us is eternal and permanent.

The Spirit and the Word go together, and by them the church is kept up. On these foundations the church is built, stands firmly, and shall stand for ever, Christ Himself being the Chief Corner-Stone.
(Matthew Henry)

LET IT GO

May faith and love in us grow and fear be removed as we trust in You, Sweet Jesus.

Intercesssors Needed

O. T. #1700  "Intercessors Needed"
May 28, 2020
Isaiah 59-Part 3
And He saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor; therefore His arm brought salvation unto him; and His righteousness, it sustained. him. (verse 16)

LET IT GLOW

Have you ever been astonished or amazed at something? I think back to the time my husband and I took a trip out to Wyoming during our first year of marriage. It was the first time that I saw a snow-capped mountain. It was astonishing to me because we were there in the middle of the summer. It happened again a few years ago when we visited Mt. Hood in Oregon during September. People were skiing down the slopes. I knew it was a "God thing." No one else could provide snow in the warm weather.

Today's key verse tells us that God saw no man and wondered that there was no intercessor.

Wondered means to stun, astonish, be amazed and intercessor means meet together, pray, make intercession in the Hebrew language.

God was astonished that there was no one to stand for truth and intercede in behalf of a sinful society.
There was no one to stand against the tide of sin and corruption. No one was capable of standing between a sinful people and God's impending judgment. (Falwell)

Are we standing in the gap for our fellow Americans and Christians? We are a sinful nation-allowing homosexuality, fornication, and adultery in public without shame; abortion that is killing innocent babies; materialism and idolatry is ramped. Let's admit our sins to God and ask for His mercy, as well as salvation and changed hearts for our neighbors. Only God can deliver us from this pandemic.

LET IT GROW

What was God to do? Since there was no mediator, God prepared to do so Himself, for He was a faithful, covenant-keeping God.
He stepped in with:
  • His strong arm, power, to bring salvation
  • and righteousness sustained Him;
  • the breastplate of righteousness and
  • helmet of salvation upon His head;
  • He was clothed with the robe of vengeance
  • and zeal as a cloak of divine passion.
God, Himself, as the Messiah, would personally step in to help, since we cannot rescue people from their sins. (Romans 11:26-27).

Figuratively speaking, the Lord armed Himself for the deliverance of His people and for taking vengeance on enemies who would seek His destruction. Paul drew on this terminology in describing a believer's spiritual preparation for warding off the attacks of Satan (Ephesians 6:14-17; 1 Thess. 5:8). (MacArthur)

We know that God delivered the faithful remnant of Israel and executed judgment on the rebellious nations, as well as the wicked Israelites. Also, Christ will ultimately deliver Israel and set up His kingdom.

LET IT GO
We owe our all to You, Jesus.
Please have mercy on us sinners.

Various Paths for Life

O. T. #1699  "
May 27, 2020 "Various Paths for Life"
Isaiah 59-Part 2
The way of peace they knew not; and there is no judgment in their goings: they have made them crooked paths: whosoever goeth therein shall not know peace. (verse 8)

LET IT GLOW

What kind of path are we walking along today? Throughout my studies, I have discovered various types of path for our life to follow:
  • Paths of righteousness-Psalm 23:3
  • Paths of mercy and truth-Ps. 25:10
  • Paths of uprightness-Proverbs 2:13
  • Straight paths-Matthew 3:3
In Sarah Young's devotional, Jesus Calling, she mentions different kinds of paths:
  • A Royal Road-Thankfulness, also, is a royal road to draw near Me, Jesus. A thankful heart has plenty of room for Me.
  • Easy Paths-Do not expect an easy path as you journey hand in hand with Me (Jesus), but do remember that I, your very-present Helper, am omnipotent.
  • Steep or Treacherous Paths-No matter how step or treacherous the path before you, the safest place to be is by My side.
  • A Golden Pathway-Trust is a Golden Pathway to heaven. When you walk on this path, you live above your circumstances. Dare to walk on the high road with Me, for it is the most direct route to heaven.
  • A Path of Light-My glorious Light shines more brightly on those who follow this path of Life.
  • Rocky and Steep Paths-Your assignment is to follow Me, Jesus, allowing Me to direct your path. Trust does not falter when the path becomes rocky and steep. Breath deep draughts of My Presence, and hold tightly to My hand. Together we can make it! Instead of assessing your energy level and wondering about what's on the road ahead, concentrate on staying in touch with Me, Jesus.
Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us to: Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.

Are we walking purposefully with Jesus, allowing Him to direct our course one step at a time? Will we allow Him to lead us along a path that is uniquely tailor-made for us?
We are on the right path when we listen to Jesus more and our doubts less. He will lead us along the way He designed just for each of us.
He is the One who goes ahead of us, opening up the way, and dis the same One who stays close and never lets go of our hand!

LET IT GROW

Judah was on the wrong path, way of life. Theirs was one of wasting and destruction (verse 7); theirs was a crooked path that was not a way of peace (verse 8).

The way of peace Israel did not know; according to Falwell, who quotes Delitzsch II, the way refers to "a high road on an embankment; their goings refers to a carriage road; and crooked paths refers to a footpath formed by a constant passing to and fro of travelers."

It sounds like Judah's problem was that they took the wrong path for their lives. They must have been on a common path traveled by many other travelers.

New Living Translation says verse 8 like this: They don't know where to find peace or what it means to be just and good. They have mapped out crooked roads, and no one who follows them knows a moment's peace.

Their paths of iniquity, sin, were crooked paths. Are our paths crooked or straight?

LET IT GO

Jesus, You have done great things!
Keep each of us on the right path that You have for us.
Help us to trust in You to direct our paths on the Golden Path to heaven.

Why Are Our Prayers Unanswered?

O. T. #1698  "Why Are Our Payers Unanswered?"
May 26, 2020
Isaiah 59
Behold, the LORD's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither His ear heavy, that it cannot hear. (verse 1)

LET IT GLOW

Previously, MacArthur described two kinds of religion in the last chapter-religious formalism, which was manifested in improper fasting and the walking in fellowship with the Lord after repentance, which bring satisfaction. Now in this chapter, Isaiah pleas with Israel to forsake their sins.

Israel's hypocrisy is exposed as Isaiah defines the sins of the people. There are two things he reminds Israel in our key verse:
  1. God has not lost the power to save them, because His hand is not shortened (to cut down, especially grass and grain; trouble). God has not lost His power, nor is it lessened. He can still reach as far as ever with as strong a hand as ever. Nothing can change His power, not even the length of time nor strength of enemies. Even though Israel's enemies kept them captive for 70 years, God was still in control over everything. He had a purpose for it all-repentance of Israel for their idolatry. So it is today, our God has power to stop this pandemic that is killing people and bring His churches to repentance of their materialism. He can still save the lost today.
  2. Not only is God's ear not heavy, but His is quick of hearing. It is not that He is weary of hearing prayers, but we are weary of praying. God both heard and understood Israel's need for deliverance. And so He does with us.
Our ears have become heavy when God speaks to us, not the other way around. He is still ready to hear our prayers as Isaiah's prayers back then. God has not changed, but has our patience of praying changed? God continues to love us, for He is our Everlasting Father. His mercies never fail, but does our faith fail? Friend, He's got this, whatever your "this" is. Keep praying and believing for God's answer.

LET IT GROW

What had separated (excluded, set apart) Israel from their God and caused His face to be hidden from them? Verses 2-8 gives us the answers:
  • iniquities (evil, fault) and sins (Romans 3:23) (verse 2); this is why God refused to hear their prayers;
  • hands defiled with blood, murders (verse 3);
  • fingers with iniquity are filthy;
  • lips spoken lies;
  • mouth spews corruption; not justice and truth (verse 4);
  • feet run to evil (verse 7);
  • thoughts were thoughts of iniquity;
It is no wonder that Israel's prayers and ours are hindered and not answered by God. Our thoughts, our language, and our activities are not pleasing to Him, since we have sin in our hearts. Maybe we are not guilty of the first six mentioned, but perhaps we are guilt of number 7.

Psalm 66:18 says, If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me.

Proverbs 6 gives us a similar list. Added in the heart that deviseth wicked imaginations and he that soweth discord among brethren.

Life Application Study Bible says it this way,
It is time for a self-evaluation so our heart is pleasing to God and He will answer our prayers. Sin offends our holy God and separates us from Him. Because God is holy, He cannot ignore excuse, or tolerate sin as though it didn't matter. Sin cuts people off from Him, forming a wall to isolate God from the people He loves. No wonder this long list of wretched sins makes God angry and forces Him to look the other way. People who die with their life of sin unforgiven separate themselves eternally from God. God wants them to live with Him forever, but He cannot take them into His holy presence unless their sin is removed. Have you confessed your sin to God, allowing Him to remove it? The Lord can save you if you turn to Him.

When we confess our sins, God is faithful to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. We must come to God on His terms. Jesus Christ is The Way. Have you asked Him to forgive you today?

LET IT GO
You are our God, holy and forgiving. Please forgive our nation of our sins.
Please forgive me of my sins.

Getting Back to the Basics of Life

O. T. #1697  "Getting Back to the Basics of Life"
May 25, 2020
Isaiah 58-Part 4
Delight thyself also in the LORD; and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart. (Psalm 37:40

LET IT GLOW

If Israel followed through on God's agenda, spiritual blessings would flow: Their recovery would come quickly; when they call, the LORD will answer; their light will shine in the darkness; the LORD will always lead. But these things hinged on God's people restoring His proper worship, symbolized by fasting, coupled with just and charitable outreach to the poor and the oppressed.
Imagine the voice the church can have in heaven today, if we come together across class, ethnic, and denominational boundaries to collectively fast and call on God to intervene. We could perhaps be the repairer of broken walls, the restorer of streets where people live.
(Tony Evans Bible Commentary)

In verses 12-14, God promises revival and restoration. The descendants of the people to whom Isaiah was preaching would one day rebuild the destroyed wall and foundations of Jerusalem. They would be repairers of the walls and rebuild the places where they would live, some along the path or road back.

Does our family or home need rebuilt by faith?

LET IT GROW

In the last two verses, Isaiah is reminding the people of the three categories of God's conditions before His promises are experienced: Man's responsibility to God, to others, and to the Sabbath.

Young suggests that the Sabbath is a place upon which one walks, a holy ground, on which the unsanctified foot is not to walk on it.

How is the Sabbath, our Lord's Day, to be observed and honored?
  • It is to be a great delight, not for doing one's own things, nor seeking pleasure (sports and recreation), nor speaking idle talk, which do not delight in the Lord Himself.
  • It is a day on which we honor the Lord and delight in Him.
  • It is a special day we set aside from our regular days of work and rest our body and spirit.
  • We do no business on the Sabbath.
  • We are to speak of divine things as we sit in the house and walk by the way.
Are we observing the Lord's Day for the Lord? Is it a day separated from common use and devoted to God and His service? Do others recognize our observance without stress of everyday activities?
Isn't it time for us to get back to the basics of life?

LET IT GO
Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in Him; and He shall bring it to pass.
Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him: fret not thyself because of Him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass. (Ps. 37:5.7)

Promises of God

O. T. #1696  "Promises of God"
May 22, 2020
Isaiah 58-Part 3

LET IT GLOW

Is your situation looking hopeless today? There are problems you are experiencing during this pandemic? Are you down and out with no hope in sight? Yesterday was a gloomy day for me, although I had no reason for it. Friend, when everything looks hopeless, we have the comfort of our eternal Hope-Jesus Christ. He is here with us, you in your world and I in mine. I ran across this verse in daily devotional spiral thingy that sits on my desk, although it was yesterday's verse. so let us run to take hold of this hope for our soul.

We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.  (Hebrews 6:19)

Previously, we discussed 5 promises God made in 6-8-God's presence, healing, protection, care, and provision.
It is impossible for God to lie. (Hebrews 6:18)
Hang on, dear one, did you know there are more promises found in verses 9-11?
  • God will answer our prayers.
  • He will quickly answer our cry. (verse 9)
  • The Lord will guide us continually.
  • He will satisfy our soul in a desert place.
  • He will give us light in our darkness and joy in place of our gloom.
  • He will restore our strength; give fat for our bones, making them ready for action. (verse 11)
  • God will bless us like a watered garden.
  • His grace will pour out on us a spring of water that never fails.
I for one needed to read those. Read back over the list again and put your name in there. Make those promises personal. Pour out Your grace upon us so we keep on flowing grace to others.
Which promise do you need to cling to today?

From the fullness of His grace we have all received one blessing after another. (John 1:16)

LET IT GROW

We find verses 9 and 10 in the middle of those promises. There are some conditions on those promises for us. They include personal integrity and love shown to others:
  • Take away the yoke of others so they are free.
  • Stop pointing your finger at those who are misfortunate.
  • Quit speaking vanity as a hypocrite.
  • Feed the hungry.
  • Help those in trouble.
If we say that we love God and do not love others, then the truth is not in us. Are we going to trust God through in this time or not?

God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 2 Cor. 9:8)

LET IT GO

Jesus, take our stress and give us rest.
Being a saint is no sacrifice, but a choice privilege.
Actions often speak much louder than words.
Surprises are part of God's divine plan, designed to remind us that He is still in charge.

Giving to Others

O. T. #1695  "Giving to Others"
May 21, 2020
Isaiah 58-Part 2

LET IT GLOW

Previously, we discussed fasting. Isaiah continues it with the spiritual conditions God puts on fasting. Then, when God's conditions have been fulfilled, God's promises will be:
  • His presence-light in the midst of darkness; light bursting forth to replace the darkness in our life; (verse 8)
  • healing- these two promises are considered together, for God extends light and life to those who worship Him; (John 1:4-7) When we come to God, He forgives, restores, and heals us.
  • protection;
  • care;
  • provision.
Is there anything better than knowing that the God of the universe hears and responds when we cry out to Him? He is aware of our needs and will provide.

LET IT GROW

What are the true characteristics of fasting that pleases God, found in verses 6 and 7?
  • A sacrificial love on behalf of other people. When we draw near God, then we will love and desire to help others.
  • We help carry their heavy burdens.
  • We help them be free in Jesus.
  • We are willing to share food and clothing with those who are in need.
When we meet the physical needs of people, they will be open to listening about their spiritual needs for Jesus. Ministering to others is part of our purpose here. We serve God when we do these. No sacrifice on our part is too great. Look at what Jesus did-He left heaven to be treated badly and then gave the ultimate sacrifice of Himself for us poor and needy people.

So check your burdens at the door, when you are in the Father's house. Check your shame at the door. They aren't welcome anymore. Your are in the Father's house. Failures are never final in the Father's house. Love is on the move when the Father is in the room. Love is breaking through when the Father's in the room. What a song.

LET IT GO
Thank You Jesus for setting us free from the burdens of our sins, love us unconditionally, and provide for our needs. May we in turn do the same for others.

Fasting With No Results

O. T. #1694  "Fasting With No Results"
May 20, 2020
Isaiah 58

LET IT GLOW

I have been on a special fasting diet for the past 9 weeks. It included no milk products, low intake of sugar and carbs, even no Dr. Peppers. The good result is that I have lost 10 pounds. The bad thing is that it did not remove thrush in my mouth, throat, nor my esophagus. I tried home remedies and prescriptions, and even stopped using my steroid inhaler for asthma, but without good results. Finally, I tried sucking lemons and that seems to be the best result.  My fast was not a spiritual one.  Then I connected with my God who cares about me. He knew my answer. Finally, I tried sucking on lemons and it seems to be the best result. Israel was fasting with no results. Check it out.

We are beginning the last section of Isaiah's book. He puts the final pieces in place for God's work of salvation and restoration for Israel. What is the beginning of that restoration? It is establishing the proper worship of God. Israel had failed miserably. They wanted God's blessings and their prayers answered, but it was not happening. They were going through the motions, with no notion of why.
After all, they:
  • came to the Temple daily;
  • seemed delighted to learn more about God;
  • acted like a righteous nation that had never abandoned God's laws;
  • pray;
  • pretend to draw near to God;
  • and fasted.
Those things were good deeds, but it did not please God. So we wonder why. God tells them in verses 3 and 4:
They kept oppressing their workers, kept fighting and quarreling, went through the motions of penance, bowed their heads in prayer, even dressing in burlap and covering themselves with ashes, and their fasting was to please themselves.

The people were proud of their fasting and were objecting that God was disregarding their fast. The only fast required by law was a fast for the Day of Atonement (Lev. 16:29; Numbers 29:7). (Falwell)

It is good for us to evaluate our motives for the religious things we do. Are we doing it for a show so we look close to God? Do we pray elaborate prayers when in the midst of others? Is our church attendance a show to others?

LET IT GROW

Fasting is good both physically and spiritually if done correctly according to God. However, there are our service to go beyond our own personal deeds. He wants us to show acts of kindness, charity, justice, and generosity, as we apply God's Word in our lives. This is pleasing to Him, how we show we love God, when we show love to others.

Love God and love others, that is how Jesus summed up the Christian life.
Relationships are often hard work and require commitment. We serve God in and through our relationships with others. God is not interested in our fasts that do not include authentic worship, which leads to real-life obedience and love for others. Every relationship must be rooted and growing in Him, and extended to the way we treat others.

Is our fasting times drawing us closer to the heart of God and seen in the way we show love for others?

LET IT GO

Open my eyes so I see opportunities to share You love.

Restoration

O. T. #1693  "Restoration"
May 19, 2020
Isaiah 57
I have seen his ways, and will heal him: I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto him and to his mourners. (verse 18)

LET IT GLOW

What three things does God say to Israel that He will do since He has seen their sinful ways?
  1. First, God will heal them.
  2. Next, God will lead them.
  3. Last, God will restore comforts to their mourners.
Aren't these great promises? Not only will God bring back to Jerusalem His people from captivity, but He will heal their sin-sick souls, but He will lead them home, as well as comfort those who mourn.
Are you in need of healing, leading, or comfort, friend? Jesus is the way.

LET IT GROW

Back in verses 16 and 17, God warns that He will not always contend for ever (referring to the outward manifestation of God's wrath), neither will He always be wroth (angry; displeased; provoke to wrath) against those whose spirit would fail (faint) before His presence.
God was angry, so He punished those greedy people. He withdrew from them, but they kept going on their own stubborn way. (Falwell)

However, God said that He would revive (restore) His people when they set aside their idols and totally depend upon the Lord God Himself.

God is the One who brings peace to a troubled heart. Anyone in need today?

LET IT GO
Gracious Father, please heal our sin-sick nation.
Lead us in Your righteous ways.
Comfort those who mourn today.
Thank You for mercy.

Revival

O. T. #1692  "Revival"
May 18, 2020
Isaiah 57
For thus sayeth the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity,
whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him
that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the
humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.
(verse 15)

LET IT GLOW

Actually, one should read this whole chapter before looking into it deeper.
First of all, how is God described in verse 15?
  • the high and lofty One;
  • His name is Holy, who dwells in the high and holy place (eternal heaven);
This righteous and holy God allows those who put their trust in Him to inherit His holy mountain, enjoy the joys of heaven with Him.

We find some great lessons for spiritual life:
  • Revival (to quicken or restore) comes only to those who are contrite (broken or repentant) and humble before God.(verse 15)
  • After all the years of Israel's sin, backsliding, and punishment, God's grace will prevail (43:25)and spiritual healing and restoration will come. This can include us, too.
  • They will have fruit of the lips, which refers to praising and thanking God. (Hebrews 13:15)
  • The righteous and merciful will enter peace in heaven.
[Resources: MacArthur's Bible Commentary; Liberty Bible Commentary]

Are you in need of revival, dear one? Grace is awaiting.
Let us not neglect our praising and thanking our God for His grace.

LET IT GROW

In contrast, we read about the evil ones in Judah who worship idols and practice as the heathen Babylonians. They are described as:
  • sorceress, adulterers, and harlots; (verse 3)
  • blatantly ridicule God's messengers; (verse 4)
  • practice child sacrifice, as a part of worship to the Ammorite god Molech; (verses 5,6)
  • its location is in the mountains, under the trees where idols were placed; (verse 7)
  • their King Ahaz did not turn them back to God, but copied the idolatry of Assyria; (verse 9)
  • they had no hope, and ultimately their destiny was hell. (verse 9)
Self-righteousness, within the religion of Israel or outside it in pagan ritual cults, shall never enable man to come into the presence of God. (Falwell)

In what are we putting our trust-government, bank accounts, people, ourself?
Or are we putting our trust in our holy God, who is in control of everything?
Are we patiently and faithfully awaiting deliverance from the pandemic?

LET IT GO

Thank You, Heavenly Father, for your grace to revive us from our lukewarm faith.
How wonderful it is for You to be with us each day!
I adore you, love and worship You.
Thank You for loving us, even when we are unlovely.
Please revive Your churches and restor our joy and hopes.

Prayer

O. T. #1691  "Prayer"
May 15, 2020
Isaiah 56
... for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people. (verse 7c)

LET IT GLOW

Do we pray when we go to the church building to worship? What do we pray for or about? God made it clear that His house was to be a house of prayer. Yet, do we often see others bringing products or fund raisers into the area of worship in the church?

Jesus quoted our key verse in Mark 11:7 when He cast out those who sold sacrificial animals for a profit in the Temple and the overturned the tables of the moneychangers. Foreign worshipers needed to pay the Temple tax and often required change, too. It was all done for a profit. This made Jesus angry because they had made God's house of worship into a place of extortion. They had made it a den of thieves.

According to Life Application Study Bible, God has requirements before He answers our prayers:
  1. You must be a believer.
  2. You must not hold a grudge against another person.
  3. You must not pray with selfish motives.
  4. Your request must be for the good of God's kingdom.
To pray effectively, you need faith in God, not faith in the object of your request. Isaiah clearly proclaims the radical message that God's blessings are for all people, even Gentile foreigners and eunuchs, who were often excluded from worship and not even considered citizens in Israel. Whatever your race, social position, work, or financial situation, God's blessings are as much for you as for anyone else. No one must exclude in any way those God chooses to include.

What kind of prayers do we pray? Are we praying for our will, our preference, our wants, or for God's will to be done in a certain situation?

LET IT GROW

How is Isaiah describing the watchmen of Israel, in verses 10-12?
He describes them as blind, ignorant, and dumb dogs.

The nation's spiritual leaders, who should have been alert watchmen and caring shepherds, were like mute dogs who cared only for themselves and their own appetites. (Tony Evans)

We should pray for our spiritual leaders and national leaders that they sacrifice for the good of their people and not sacrifice their people for their own greed.

The problems Israel had was the Jewish leaders had made the Temple a commercial venture in the N.T. and brought in idol worship into the nation in the O. T.

LET IT GO
Your will, Your way, today, I pray.

Homeward Bound

O. T. #1690  "Homeward Bound"
May 14, 2020
Isaiah 55-Part 3
For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of their field shall clap their hands.
 (verse 12)

LET IT GLOW

We lived away from our families for 17 years. I remember those trips back; we were homeward bound. They were filled with joy, for we were going home where love and peace and acceptance awaited us. We all needed that assurance. Being filled with such, we were able to return into the world of ministry, which can be quite difficult at times. And so it is with us now. When we get together with family, what joy there is in our hearts!

The Word of God brings life wherever it lands. It announces His salvation to mankind.

His plan defies human logic; He knows what He is doing. (Swindoll)

When the Jews were homeward bound, they had to go through desert coming from Babylon (modern Turkey).
What was this difficult journey going to be like for the returnees after 70 years in bondage?
  • They will go out with joy (glee, exceedingly gladness, pleasure, rejoicing). When there is joy in our life, don't we naturally begin singing? Joy is mentioned 28 times by Isaiah. God knew His people would need reassuring that there would once again be joy for them, after slavery.
  • They will be led forth with peace (happy, welfare, rest, safety)
  • The mountains and hills will break forth in singing.
  • All the trees of the field shall clap their hands, keeping time with the music.
The desert through which they pass is transformed into a memorial garden commemorating the Lord's victory over His foes. It remain in its transformed state for all time to come. (The Broadman Bible Commentary)

Since we have been inside for a couple of months, and our schedule has been completely changed, I think we will go out with joy. We will be able to sit in restaurants to eat, go watch a movie, attend ball games, and go shopping at our leisure. What a day that will be!

LET IT GROW

There are a couple of insteads in verse 13:
  • Instead of the thorn, there will be fir trees;
  • instead of briers, there will be myrtle trees.
These will be a reverse of the curse, testifying the Lord's redemption. The evidence of salvation will be a fruitful tree, as opposed to a thorn or brier being produced. We will know the saved by their fruits (Matthew 7:16-20).

Such a productive and fruitful life shall stand as a name and an everlasting sign, and it shall not be cut off (destroyed because it is indestructible). The name is that designation which God shall give to His people; it shall never be blotted out, and they themselves who are the receptacles of His everlasting life shall remain as a miraculous sign of His grace for all eternity. (Liberty Bible Commentary)

True Christians cannot loose their salvation, for we are sealed with the blood of Jesus Christ.

Here are 4 vital truths form this chapter, according to Broadman Bible Commentary:
  1. God alone can satisfy the deep inner needs of the human spirit.
  2. Israel's true destiny to be a witness to the nations can only be realized as she herself returns to God.
  3. The day of redemption has drawn near and the time of response is now.
  4. God is faithful to His promises and His Word never fails.
The greatness of God's salvation and grace will have tremendous effects on the earth in the millennial kingdom. The plague of the world after Adam and Eve sinned will be replaced by plants of beauty and usefulness. (Tony Evans)

Will we break out into singing because of the redemption of Jesus?

When love broke through, it found me in the darkness, wandering through the desert. I was a hopeless fool. Now I am hopelessly devoted; my chains are broken. And it all began with You, when love broke through. Thank You, Jesus for Your love and salvation.

Folks, we are homeward bound-heaven. Isn't that something to sing about?

LET IT GO

Bring our guilt and shame. That is not our name. I hear a voice who calls me redeemed. Greater is the One living inside of me than he who is living in the world.

Jesus, You have made us overcomers because You overcame the world and sin and evil and death.
Glory to You!

Words and Ways

O. T. #1689  "Words and Ways"
May 13, 2020
Isaiah 55-Part 2
For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, saith the LORD.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts. (verse 8-9)

LET IT GLOW

Looking back over this chapter, we see that God has prepared a feast for our soul, if we will only listen to what His Word has to say and apply it in our lives. It will be food and drink for our soul and life that will be satisfied. Now, this feast is free to us, but was costly for our host as He paid for it with the blood of  the Servant Jesus Christ. It requires an RSVP, reserved through salvation in God's Son. We can feast on the Words of Life, which is Jesus Christ Himself, and enjoy the blessings of David.
Will we come to the Word, seek His Ways, and call upon Him? His Words give us wisdom and the answers we desperately need, then we can please God and give Him glory with our life.

There is a contrast between God's thoughts and mankind's thoughts.
Our thoughts are: finite, limited, have a beginning, evil, vain, worth nothing, think we can save our self, and works of righteousness are sufficient to justify us.
God's thoughts are: infinite, unlimited, have no beginning, not evil but holy, have a purpose, worth everything, can save us, and show us His righteousness.

There is no one like our God. His thoughts are holy with acts of grace, abundantly pardons all returning sinners with great crimes and small sinful thoughts, for He is ready and willing to forgive and forget our sins. God forgives freely, fully, without reserve or private grudge, and forgettfulness.

How thankful we are for God's Word to us!

LET IT GROW

Secondly, there is a contrast between God's ways and mankind's ways
Our ways are unholy, crooked, ways of darkness, not pleasant, thus lead to death.
God's ways are holy, plain, ways of light, pleasant, and lead to life.

Human ways are based on what seems fair. Our right ways get rewarded and blessed; our wrong ways get consequences and punishments. When God allows unfair treatment to occur, it is for profound and deep reasons. (Swindoll)

As we seek the Lord through His heavenly Word, it touches our dry soul and waters it like rain waters the seeds, then brings forth life as flowers and food. (verse 10)

The Word of God brings life wherever it lands.

Verse 11 tells us that His Word goes out of God's mouth as He sends it out, always produces fruit, accomplishes all He wants it to, and will prosper everywhere God sends it. The Word of God does not return to Him void (in vain).  (verse 11)

LET IT GO
You have been my Savior, Sustainer, when I'm at my end;
my Healer, Redeemer, again and again.
You are my strength, my rock, Jesus;
everything I've needed, Lord, You've always been.
You are the Word of Life.
How wonderful and awesome You are!
Please forgive us of our sins today.

Benefits and Abundance

O. T. #1688  "Benefits and Abundance"
May 12, 2020
Isaiah 55
Seek ye the LORD while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near. (verse 6)

LET IT GLOW

What  benefits are there for those who come to Jesus for salvation?
  • If any are spiritually thirsty, come and drink from the Living Water. The Jews rejected Jesus as the fountain of living waters. In John 4:14, Jesus told the Samaritan woman at the well that whoever drinks from Him will never thirst again. He gave her living water, for eternally.
  • It is obtained without money and not price, which means salvation is free to us. Jesus' redemptive work provides us with benefits.
  • We receive free milk and wine, which symbolize abundance. Jesus gives us abundant life.
  • From Jesus, we can eat of the finest food and what is good. We will eat not from the bread of deceit, but from the Bread of Life (Jesus).
  • Our soul will be delighted as it become fat as we feast on the Word of God (John 6).
  • When we come to Jesus with our open ears to hear what He has to say to us, then we will find life.
  • God will make an everlasting covenant with us.
  • We will obtain unfailing love as David did.
Wow! Are you overwhelmed today, dear one? Come to Jesus and He will fill your soul with what you need. May we keep coming to Him for our thirsty and hungry soul needs. Jesus will help us hold on, just another day.

LET IT GROW

Read our key verse above.

Salvation grace and mercy are available to the soul that is willing to seek the Lord and call on Him while He is still available. (MacArthur)

God's invitation to the sinner is open when He is near, but the sinner may come only when he is called. God elects us as His child, then He calls us to believe in Christ for salvation. All we do is believe in Him as Savior. We must not presume upon the grace of God always being available. He convicts us only a few times, if we reject Him, then His Spirit leaves.
When the wicked repents, God promises mercy and abundantly pardon.

Have you called upon Jesus, my friend? Do not wait when He calls you to salvation.

Let me share my personal experience. When I was a young teen, I went to VBS with my friends. I felt the Spirit speaking to me when the teacher shared the gospel with us. I was too embarrassed to pray the prayer of salvation. Then a few years later, I realized that I wasn't going to heaven when a 16 year old friend died in a car wreck.  In my bedroom one night, I didn't know the proper words, but God saved me. How grateful I am that He did not turn from me as I did Him earlier. I am just sorry that it took the death of a young man to bring me to Jesus.

LET IT GO
Jesus, You are my abundant life and abundant pardon.
You are satisfy my thirsty soul and hungry soul with Your Word and Your love.
I need You everyday.
Use me to bring others to Your salvation well.

Casting Fish Hooks and Burdens

O. T. #1687  "Casting Fish Hooks and Burdens"
May 11, 2020
Isaiah 54-Part 5
Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and He shall sustain thee: He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved. (Psalm 55:22)

LET IT GLOW

One of the delightful memories I have as a child was going fishing with my parents. My grandparents, who lived just down the road, lived on a section of our local creek, as well as some neighbors. Now let me tell you, Mom took fishing seriously. She had caught minnows and dug up worms ahead of time. One thing I learned about her was to not interrupt her waiting for that fish, usually a bass, to nibble her line. On the other hand, Dad was happy to share his pole with me. He would bait it and caste the hook into the waters. Sometime we would catch a small perch and sometime we would catch nothing. It didn't matter to us, for we spent time together. Dad taught me how to caste with my own pole later on. Oh, how I miss those days.

Read the above verse. We are to cast our burdens upon Jesus, like my parents caste out the hook to catch a fish. Our God loves us so much that He wants to sustain us during this time. Will we caste what is weighing down our heart to Him to carry? When we do, then we don't have to carry those problems and unsurities of life. We trust the Lord to handle them.

The compassion and everlasting love of God are two of the most important concepts in the Old Testament. Our Redeemer will have great mercies on us. That is what we found out previously. Jesus is the one who stands with wide open arms to pour out His love and compassion upon us. Have you received yours today?

Like the storm-battered Jerusalem, storms of affliction, trouble, and desolation come to toss us about. This isolation is not going to last forever, friend. We have a future and a hope. Isaiah jumps to future eternal messianic reign following the millennium (Rev. 21). What will the New Jerusalem, which Jesus will build, be like? We have some promises in verses 11-17, which will apply to us as children of God:
  • It will be rebuilt with precious jewels and shining gems, those foundations, towers, gates, and windows.
  • The children will be taught about and by Jesus and enjoy peace. (verse 13)
  • Spiritual richness of truth and peace will prevail along with righteousness. (verse 14)
  • Don't fear, for oppression and terror will not come near, your enemies will stay away. (verse 14b)
  • If any come to fight and attack, they will go down in defeat. (verse 15)
Because righteousness is the foundation of the city, its security and safety is assured. (Holman Illustrated Bible Commentary)

LET IT GROW

No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. this is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD. (verse 17)

Isaiah is using military (weapon) and legal judgments (accusations) as metaphors, God proclaims that His people will withstand all attacks because of His protection from would-be conquerors.

What are we reassured in this verse?
  • No weapon that is brought again us will succeed.
  • Every implication or accusation that comes against us, whether in a formal accusation or irresponsible gossip. The church will withstand it and so can we.
  • Our inheritance as servants of Jesus is righteousness. Not our own self-righteousness, but the free gift of Jesus' righteousness, which He give us.
God's grace knows no bounds. It is always available to believers.
Are there any weapons coming against you? Let Jesus handle it.

LET IT GO

Thank You Jesus for bearing our burdens and protecting us from weapons formed against us.

A Forsaken or Grieved Woman

O. T. #1686  "A Forsaken or Grieved Woman"
May 8, 2020
Isaiah 54-Part 4
For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of Hosts is His name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall He be called. (verse 5)

LET IT GLOW

As believers, God wants to enlarge our place of influence. Also, we are not be ashamed of our past. Now in verses 5-10, God reminds Israel and us who He is:
  • Maker (to do or make; appoint);
  • husband
  • LORD of Hosts
  • Redeemer (to be the next of kin to buy back a relative's property)
  • the Holy One of Israel
  • God of the whole world
Israel's husband was the Lord, who had to reject His wife for a brief moment because of her sin and uncleanness (verse 7). His promise, though, has always been to take her back to cleanse and restore her. (Tony Evans)

Like Hosea had to do after his wife Gomer was unfaith, their lives illustrated Israel's unfaithfulness to God.

We are reminded of the story of Naomi in the Book of Ruth. God would bring life from Jerusalem's widowhood by restoring her children after the exile. (David Jeremiah)

Since the church is referred to the bride of Christ, are being faithful to our husband, Christ? Or have we wandered into the world, putting things before Him?

Jesus is our Kinsman Redeemer who purchased our salvation and made us children of God. Yes! Glory to God!

LET IT GROW

In verse 6, God feels like a wife who is forsaken and grieved concerning Judah. For such a woman, she could have lost a husband in death by his leaving her. She had been his wife for years from her youth. She was grieved and felt forsaken. Feelings of betrayal or abandoned must be a deep injury.

For a brief moment God abandoned Judah, but with great compassion He will take them back. In a burst of anger He turned His face away for a little while. But with everlasting love He will have compassion on them. (verse 7 NLT)

God promises to give Judah and us what?
  • Great mercies,
  • Everlasting kindness,
  • His kindness will not depart from us and neither will His covenant of His peace.
Wow! Now that is so marvelous that we must keep going in our present day. Stay focused on our Savior, Jesus Christ. This is going to all work out for our good and His glory.

LET IT GO
Jesus, quite our soul. Everything we once held dear, we lay them down. Lead us into Your will with Your mercy and kindness and peace.

*Have a Happy Mother's Day, ladies!

Ashamed

O. T. #1685  "Ashamed"
May 7, 2020
Isaiah 54-Part 3
Fear not; for thou shalt not be ashamed: neither be thou confounded; for thou shalt not be put to shame: for thou shalt not forget the shame of thy youth, and shalt not remember the reproach of thy widowhood any more. (verse 4)

LET IT GLOW

How is it going, friend? Our governor has allowed barber shops and hair salons to open today. Guess where I am sending my husband.

In our key verse, we read of several promises from God, which applies to both Israel and us:
  • Fear not. Have you been afraid to go out of your house with the coronavirus out there? Don't be afraid dear child of God; trust Him.
  • You will no longer live in ashamed. Webster's Dictionary defines ashamed as feeling shame, guilt, disgraced, inferior or unworthy.
  • Neither be confounded, which refers to wound; but only figuratively to taunt or insult; hurt; put to shame.
  • You will not be put to shame, which means to blush; bring reproach.
  • You will no longer remember the shame (the feeling and the condition, as well as its cause) of your youth.
  • You will not remember the reproach (disgrace; rebuke; reproach; shame) of widowhood.
Israel's sins brought on the Egyptian captivity and the Babylonian exile, and her current dispersion, but the glories of the future kingdom will be so great that they will overshadow past failures. (MacArthur)

I have experienced the feelings of shame, guilt, disgrace, insults, hurt, and being wounded from my past sins and actions. However, this verse reminds me that I am not to remember all of that when it is all covered with the blood of Jesus after I have confessed it all. Then I should not feel inferior or unworthy, nor even blush. I am a child of the King, King Jesus. He loves me with an everlasting love.

LET IT GROW

Now read verse 3. After their 70 years of captivity, God told Israel to extend the area of their of their dwellings, he explains why. They will be soon be bursting at the seams. Their descendants will occupy other nations and resettle the ruined cities (after they return to Jerusalem). We know that happened for a while, but later, the Romans destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple again. Then, in 1948, Israel was united and recognized as a nation.

Here's the thing-We are in the church age and we should be thinking outside the walls of the church building. People need Christ and the hope He gives. They need forgiveness and love.

LET IT GO

In Christ alone, my hope is found. I am His and He is mine, bought with the precious blood of Christ. Jesus command my destiny. Nothing can pluck us from Your hand. Til You return or call me home, here in the power of Christ I stand.

*Praying for our nation and leaders today.

Let God

O. T. #1684  "Let God"
May 6, 2020
Isaiah 54-Part 2

LET IT GLOW

There are still more thoughts on verse 2 which I did not discuss. It was not only written to Judah before they went into captivity and their return to desolate Jerusalem, but it applies to the New Testament church, and today's church, also. Just like the returnees were to enlarge their city because more returnees were going to come back, so the N.T. church was told to enlarge the church to include Gentiles. Because the Pharisees and Scribes rejected Jesus as the Messiah, grace was stretched out to those who were not Jews. We saw this at Pentecost when thousands became believers. Paul and others pulled up the pegs and went into their world spreading the good news of salvation in Christ.

How does this apply to today's churches?
  • We are to lengthen the cords, making more room as we seek to win those in our communities for Jesus, as well as bring back the straying sheep.
  • We are to teach and listen to the Word, then have a deeper walk of faith.
  • We are to tighten our grip on Jesus, have a firm grip on our beliefs, and confirm the Word in our life.
  • We are to give support for the evangelistic work by giving abundantly from our means.
[Resource: J.W. Bardsley on the website Study Light]

Thank you friends for continuing with us through this study of Isaiah. It is so rich in verses of faith, and more is to come as we dig deeper in the Word.

LET IT GROW

Here is another thing I read and wanted to share.
William Carey preached a sermon on world missions delivered on May 31, 1792. His efforts eventually led to the formation of Baptist Missionary Society, which became the forerunner of the modern missionary movement. He went to India as a missionary to spread the gospel.

Two things Carey said in his sermon:
  1.  Expect great things from God;
  2.  Attempt great things for God.
As God puts a burden upon our heart, we should look around and see where He is working and wants us to join Him. As we pray and read the Word of God, and listen to the Spirit of God, then we will know what the will of God is for us. All things are possible with our God. He can bring success in our efforts.

What is God leading you to do? When we obey, then we will have peace in knowing we are pleasing God and we will see Him working through us. Also, we will receive blessings that would not come otherwise. He will provide what we need to carry it out.

LET IT GO
... and let God be God, in control.
...and let God lead and do His will.

Faith Stretched

O. T. #1653  "Faith Stretched"
May 5, 2020
Isaiah 54
Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations: spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes. (verse 2)

LET IT GLOW

Is your faith being stretched like a rubber band during this pandemic? Are you ready for things to get back to normal again like I am? do you feel like you are going to pop if it doesn't soon? Hang in there friend. There is hope.

Previously, Isaiah had told Israel /Judah to repent of their sins of idolatry and come back to God. However, we know they did not do so and as a result went into captivity for 70 in Babylon, living as a slave.

In her exile and dispersion, Israel has been destitute, disgraced as a woman who had borne no children. The prophet calls for singing, however, because of the Lord's promise of future fruitfulness for the nation (verse 1). (MacArthur)

Can we sing God's praises during our bad times, uncertain times, fearful times, like our present day situation because of the pandemic? Is our dependence upon our god instead of our government to provide for us?

LET IT GROW

When the Jews return to Jerusalem, the desolate city would face a problem of overpopulation. They were to prepare for so numerous inhabitant that a larger space would be required. They returned in 3 groups: There were 46,697 returned under Zerubbabel's leadership, then over 1,754 returned under Ezra's leadership, and finally, an unknown amount returned under Nehemiah's leadership. so the Jews had to enough build houses for about 50,000 people in Jerusalem, not to mention the Temple and their business.

What instructions are given in verse 2?
  • Enlarge the place of thy tent (house);
  • stretch the curtains of thy inhabitation, spreading out your home;
  • spare no expense;
  • lengthen thy cords;
  • strengthen thy stakes.
Have you watched someone set up a tent for camping? Perhaps you have even helped. The tent is secured by pegs in the ground, the ties are secured to them. And so it is with our life. God is telling us to enlarge our space of influence, stretch our faith and dependence upon Him. Stretch with more love, hope, and joy to others who need it.Don't spare the cost, whether it be our time, money, comfort. Be obedient to the Lord, focusing on Him and not our needs. Sing praises to God now, because He is going to bless our efforts and witness into overflowing.

It seems like this is where my husband and I are now in our walk of faith. He has preached at 3 different churches and we have sung at 2 different churches just within the last month. Our influence is being stretched out and so is our faith. It is a joy to meet with various congregations of believers while they worship in their cars on the church grounds or over the Facebook page.

Are you open to being stretched in your faith, walk with God, and influence?
Can you sing for joy praises to the Lord Jesus for what He has done, even if you are stuck at home?
Hold on just a little longer, it is going to get better.

LET IT GO

Father, You are so faithful and trustworthy.
Use us to share the love of Jesus.
Stretch our faith and influence for Your glory.

Dividing the Spoil

O. T. #1682  "Dividing the Spoil"
May 4, 2020
Isaiah 53-Part 8
Therefore will I divide Him a portion with the great, and He shall divide the spoil with the strong: because He hath poured out His soul unto death: and He was numbered with the transgressors; and He bare the sins of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
(verse 12)

LET IT GLOW

Keep in mind that Isaiah is prophesying what will happen to the Servant Savior, Jesus Christ, some 800 years later. Because God the Father raised His Son from the dead, He is now the resurrected Lord. He is our intercessory high priest, who began on the cross and continues in heaven. When we asked Jesus to be our Savior and forgive our sins, then He becomes our intercessor, seated at the right hand of God, the Judge.
A high priest in Israel would one day a year, on the Day of Atonement, go into the Holy of Holies and present the blood sacrifice for the nation of Israel's sins. Jesus is our high priest who did that for us. His blood was acceptable to the Father, so we do not need a priest today. The Servant Savior provided the way to God through His atonement.

The Father has exalted the Son to a place of supremacy, "seating Him at His right hand in the heavens" (Ephesians 1:20), and all those who trust in Christ are seated with Him, having access to His spiritual blessings (Eph. 1:3-14; 2:4-6). (Tony Evans)

Hebrews 7:25-26 explains, Wherefore He is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them. For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens.

Today, when we pray in Jesus' name, then He presents our prayers to God our heavenly Father.
Do you know Jesus as your Savior?

LET IT GROW

This chapter ends with the glorification and exaltation of the Servant of the Lord Jesus. Because of the great work of atonement of Christ, then what has God the Father given His Son?
  • He will allot Jesus a portion with the great. Jesus is highly exalted and His name is above every name.
  • He will divide the spoil with Jesus. When a general of an army conquered or driven away their enemy, the victors took the plunder, divided the spoil. God's abundance of grace and comfort is bestowed upon all His faithful soldiers, us. The spoil He divides is to the vast multitudes of willing, faithful, loyal subjects.
  • This happens because Christ has poured out His soul unto death. He has vanquished principalities and powers, sin and Satan, death and hell, the world and the flesh; these are the strong He has disarmed and taken the spoil of.
  • Jesus was numbered with the transgressors.
  • He bore the sins of many.
  • He made intercession for the transgressors.
[Resource: Matthew Henry's Commentary; Liberty Bible Commentary]

This is the Gospel of Isaiah. Now we sinners are acceptable to God, yet it is only because of the blood of Jesus Christ. We are made righteous through Him, our righteousness is a filthy rags.
Are you a part of the family of believers? Are your family and friends?

LET IT GO

Thank You Jesus for enduring the cross, the emotional and physical pain, because You love me.
Amazing Grace how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost but now am found; was blind but now I see.
Here I am to worship.

Laboring is Hard

O. T. #1682  "Laboring is Hard"
May 1, 2020
Isaiah 53-Part 7
Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He hath put Him to grief: when thou shalt make His soul an suffering for all, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand. (verse 10)

LET IT GLOW

Are we sharing what we have with others today? Do we look around to find needs of others that we can meet, expecting nothing in return? Someone did just that for us. Find out who as you read on, friend.

The death of Christ was the plan and purpose of God, although wicked men were personally responsible for it. What can we learn from this key verse?
  • It pleased God to bruise (crush) Jesus, His Son. This was part of God's plan and sovereign will so He could show us mercy. What a great price!
  • He caused Jesus grief (a sickle, as cutting); which may be rendered that He might pierce Him.
  • God made Jesus Christ's soul an offering for sin, including the guilt and trespass offerings. (Numbers 5)
  • Then Jesus, who had no physical lineage, but only spiritual ones, who are all the redeemed children of God, believers in Christ. We, who are born again spiritually, are His seed.
  • The life of Jesus will be prolonged, which refers to His ministry will not end with the death of Jesus. He lives forever and eternally.
  • The pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand. The means the infinite love of Christ toward us as He takes the highest delight in our salvation and He rests in it as the fruit of His labors.
The substitutionary atonement of Christ was always the master plan of God the Father. (Falwell)

One might wonder why would it please God, who is a loving God, to kill His only Son on the cross. It was in order for Jesus to provide salvation of His seed, the children of God. We are the fruit of His sacrifice.

If Christ is your model for ministry, you cannot avoid going to the cross for the sake of others. Salvation comes with a great price, and if we are going to "take up our cross" and follow Jesus, then we must be prepared to go with Him to the place of suffering if that's what it takes to bring salvation to those around us. (Blackaby)

Are we experiencing hardship? Is the price we are paying for ministry seeming too great? Just reflect on the price God was willing to pay to bring salvation to you. Are we willing to join Him in whatever it takes to bring salvation to those around us?

LET IT GROW

He shall see of the travail of His soul, and shall be satisfied: by His knowledge shall My righteous servant justify many; for He shall bear their iniquities. (verse 11)

His (Christ) death and travail on the cross have mad possible God's family of saved sinners. These are people whom He has justified, declared righteous through His grace. (Wiersbe)

In the Hebrew language, the word travail means toil; grievance; labor; pain; sorrow; wearisome.

What can we glean from this verse?
  • Christ saw all that was accomplished by His pain, substitutionary suffering, which caused God to be satisfied. He gave His life a ransom for many (Matthew 20:28). Men used to bring animals as sacrifices for their sin and the sin of their family.(Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sin.)  Christ made Himself an offering for our sins.
  • Because of what He did on the cross, Christ made it possible for many to be counted righteous and justified. He knew exactly what needed to be done to solve the sin problem, and was willing to do it. The plan was accomplished. Romans 5:19 states, For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of One shall many be made righteous.
The ultimate purpose of the coming of the Servant is not merely to teach the way to God, but to provide the way to God through His atonement. (Falwell)

Thus, Jesus said He was the Way. (John 14:6)
Are we willing to make sacrifices (travail in prayer and deeds) in order for the lost to be saved from the penalty of sin?
It may require our time, energy, or money. But in the long run, it is not even a sacrifice when we see a life brought to Christ. We must keep in mind that we are working for God and not our self as we serve others, but for God. (Colossians 3:23)

LET IT GO
Amazing love, how can it be, that You my King should die for me?
We are at a loss for words, Jesus.
