Matthew 6-Part 12
LET IT GLOW
I like giving to college students, for we had such a rough time financially during our time in college. I understand doing without. God was always faithful in providing what we needed. Our lesson was to depend upon Him and be thankful.
Previously, we learned how to fast for spiritual gain. We are to do it in secret with a usual appearance. We are to not be like the hypocrites who draw attention to themselves.
There is one word that appears 7 times in this chapter-reward.
In the Greek language, reward means pay for service, good or bad; wages. (found in verses 1, 2, 16)
A different word reward means to five away; deliver; repay; restore. (found in verses 4,6,18)
My conclusion is that there is no reward from God whenever we gives alms [compassionateness (as exercised toward the poor)] to be seen of men, sounding the trumpet in the streets, and fasting with a sad countenance. Those have their reward of men and not from God. (verses 1,2,16)
Also, when we give alms, pray, and fast in secret, then God will reward us openly (outwardly; shining). Our Father in heaven will reward us, while here on earth or in heaven. These seems to a matter of the sincere heart.
LET IT GROW
I like how Jerry Falwell put it as a contrast of outward worship and inward worship manifested:
- Giving/possessing
- praying/worrying
- Fasting/ judging.
LET IT GO
How amazing is Your grace, Father!
Help our trust become stronger.
Open our hearts and hands to give.
