Summary of Habakkuk 

LET IT GLOW

Nothing is known about Prophet Habakkuk. He was a contemporary of Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, and Zephaniah. He prophesied during the final days of the Assyrian Empire, who conquered the Northern Kingdom Israel. 

Babylon began their military march through Nineveh in 612 BC; then in 605BC, began on their way to Jerusalem. The Temple was destroyed in 586; in 536 Babylon fell to the Medes and Persians. King Cyrus was in charge then. After 70 years in exile, the Israelites rebuilt the Temple in 516 BC. 

That gives us a perspective on events during this time. Wickedness was happening during the dark days of Habakkuk. Judah had turned away from God. Prophets warned of God's judgment if they did not repent and change. History tells us it did not happen, so God used armies to discipline His people.

God gave the prophet a vision of what was to come. Then he had questions for God: How long must I cry out for help? Must I see these evil deeds, destruction, and violence forever? 

God answered that Habakkuk would be amazed, wonder marvellously in what He would do. The Babylonians were coming. (1:5)

God can do amazing things, dear one. Sometimes it is better than we imagined, other times worse. Yet, He is in charge and knows how to break hard hearts.

LET IT GROW

In 2:3, the prophet is told to wait patiently, for it will surely take place; it won't be delayed. Then we are told, the just shall live by faith. (2:4)

But the LORD is in His holy temple. Let all the earth keep silent before Him. (2:20)

Habakkuk asks God to remember His mercy in His anger. (3:2)

His ways are everlasting. (3:6)

Even when the fields are empty, no sheep or cows, rejoice in the LORD. Be joyful in our salvation. Make Him your strength. Keep walking by faith. God has this.

You are the maker of the rain and sunshine, Oh LORD God.

We will praise You, for You are worthy of praise, even if You do not send us rain today.

I am a child of the Most High God and You are for me.

You hold eternity in Your hands.

Thank You, Jesus, for providing our salvation!

Need Strength Today?

Habukkuk 3-Part 6

LET IT GLOW

Who is not in need of strength today? We need strength to carry on, endure temptation, last through trials, overcome whatever is at our doorstep. God's strength can help us rise above our circumstances. 

In spite of the testing, the prophet remains firm in his resolve to rejoice in the LORD.; He is the God of our salvation. (verse 18) the same God who brings judgment also brings deliverance. He will see Habukkuk through the trials personally and the nation through its crisis until all of His purposes are ultimately fulfilled. (Liberty Bible Commentary)

Then in verse 19, he says, The LORD God is my strength. 

In the Hebrew language, the word strength means might; a force; power; valour. 

There are so many places in the Psalms which use strength, that I won't take time to count them. The word is used along with salvation, hope, righteousness, strength of my life and heart, rock of strength, and strength of His servant. 

My favorite verse tells us they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. Is our faith growing? Are we trusting Him in as we rise above our situation? As hard times economically try our patience, let God be our strength through it.

The second part of verse 19 says, He will make my feet like hinds' feet. 

The use of the word hinds' refers to a doe or female deer.

Have you ever seen a doe jump over a fence? Numerous times I have. Each time it is amazing. They look as though they glide over the obstacle. And the deer clear the fence by a foot at least. It doesn't matter if the deer have a run at the fence or are just standing beside the fence. Those back leg muscles are powerful and provide swiftness to run. Deer can run across rough and dnagerous terrain. 

So why do we worry? God is the answer to my problems and your problems. When He looks at our heart, does God see faith? He can provide us with strength to carry on, jump over those obstacles, rise above them, and run to Him.

We have 3 great assurances: God's grace, glory, and government. Our God is on the throne, so everything is under His control. He cven transforms us from a worrier to a watcher to being a worshipper. (Wiersbe)

When we do, then He will make me to walk upon mine high places. (verse 19c)

With God, anything is possible. Whatever happens to me, I'll praise the God who saves me because He is my strength. When you know God's character (who He is) and His works (what He has done), you'll know that you can trust Him-even in the dark. (Tony Evans)

God is the strength of my heart, my portion forever. (Ps. 73:26b)

Is God your strength today? Are you asking Him strength and surefooted confidence in difficult times? God is working, although we may not see it at the time. He never has plan B.

Help us rejoice in You, Lord Jesus.

May we rejoice in the God of our salvation.

Fill my cup, Lord, run it over.

Give me joy and peace, strength and faith.

Habakkuk 3-Part 5

LET IT GLOW

How many times have I failed to thank God and praise Him through my hard times? Uncountable. One thing I have learn through this long life of mine- God is faithful. He can give strength and faith to endure. Through it all, I have learned to trust in Jesus. (Though I have not yet arrived in perfection.)

In this chapter, we read the prophet's prayer to God, his praise of God, and now we will find his trust in God. (verses 16-19) Having praised God for His majesty and power, Habakkuk moves on to express his trust in such a wonderful God.

In spite of God bringing the Babylonians to conquer Judah and Jerusalem, Habakkuk's trust remains strong. That cruel army was going to affect not only the population, but also the orchards, vineyards, fields, and herds. All of this will be part of God's judgment. Habakkuk's belly trembled, lips quivered, his legs gave way, and he shook in terror. (He had seen the future in a vision.)

For whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth... (Hebrews 12:6)

Even though there were no figs, grapes, olives, dead flocks and empty cattle barns, what did this man say he would do? ,,,Yet I will rejoice in the LORD! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation! (verse 18)

What a man of faith! Can we rejoice in the good and bad and hard times? Will we still praise our faithful God? If He is the God of our salvation, we should, would, could, and must. Who else will praise God?

LET IT GROW

I don't know what problem you are experiencing now, but we can rise above it. We can choose to walk by faith with God. God has a purpose for each of our lives. He intends to carry it through. We can trust Christ, then He will work in us and around us. He is working on us to change us into the image of Christ, dear believer. We know that God makes all things work together for our good and His glory. So start by thanking God for what He has done, praising Him for who He is, loving Him with all our heart.

LET IT GO

Lord Jesus, it isn't easy to be thankful for our troubles. We trust You can and will work things out for us. Do what only You can do, for Your glory. Do the God-thing.

Deliverance

Habakkuk 3-Part 4

LET IT GLOW

Is there a burden that you have been carrying for a while? Is there a situation that you need delivering from, day after day? If so, then read on, dear one.

In chapter 3, Habakkuk praises God for His splendor, brilliance, and power. No one can stand before Him; he makes the earth tremble. During the Flood of Noah's day, the mountains were covered with water. What a tremendous amount of water it took. Mt. Everest is the tallest mountain at 29,032 feet, in the Himalayas, located near the border of Tibet and Nepal. 

In His time God will save His people. Meantime, the prophet had to quietly wait for the day of distress to come against the invaders of Judah. (Remember that Habakkuk preached during the reign of the last two kings of Judah.)

In verse 11, the prophet recalls God's control over the sun and moon. Israel was victorious over the Amorites at Gibeon. (Joshua 10) Then in verse 14, he recalled the parting of the Red Sea for the Israelites' safety and Pharoah's army was drown in it. What a power God we serve! These are not just stories in a book, but actually occurred. 

LET IT GROW

God cares about His people and takes care of them. From Moses and Joshua, to His chosen people Israel, then to us, God provides for His.

Thou wentest forth for the salvation of Thy people, even for salvation with thine annointed: Thou woundest the head out of the house of the wicked, by discovering the foundation unto the neck. (verse 13)

The meaning of the Hebrew word for salvation is deliverance, safety, saving.

Not only can this refer to Israel being delivered from the hand of the evil ones, but this salvation can refer to Jesus Christ the Messiah, who provided salvation as the Anointed One Savior. 

Friend, have you been delivered from the chains of sin? Have you asked Jesus to forgive your sins and become your Savior? He loves you so much that He died on a cross in order to provided our salvation. It is by faith through grace that we are saved, not by our works.

The whole world is Your hands, Father. 

Thank You Jesus for giving Yourself for us sinners!

Habakkuk 3-Part 3

LET IT GLOW

What a change in Habakkuk's life. He waited patiently on the watchtower for God to answer his questions. Waiting developed faith, real living faith, and opened his eyes to something he was no conscious of before. That is how he could sing this song (chapter 3) unto his God. The prophet thought God was not going to do anything about the sins of the Chaldeans or Babylonians. They were going to be used as His rod of anger. 

Yep, God had a plan and was working it. Habakkuk was afraid God was going to do too much! He asked for God to remember His mercy. Instead of showers of blessing, we need showers of mercy. 

Is Jesus working in your life? Is He your Savior?

So far, the prophet's prayer, song, admitted God can revive us, accomplishing His purposes. He is Majesty on High. His ways are everlasting. 

Now Habakkuk acknowledges God showed His power as He dried up the Red Sea for His children to cross over toward the Promised Land. How powerful our God is! His power is open and evident to all. Moses and Daniel saw it. 

Do we stop and think about the great power God has? As we are in great need of rain in the south, I pray God will send us rain, then reign on earth.

Be confident of this very thing, that He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. (Phil. 1:6)

Strength arises when we wait upon the Lord. We will wait upon the Lord our God. You reign forever. Our Hope, our Strong Deliverer.

You are the everlasting God. You do not faint. You won't grow weary. You are the defender of the weak. You comfort those in need.

You are the Everlasting God.

Habakkuk 3-Part 2

LET IT GLOW

Habakkuk is singing his prayer to God. He is filled with awe by His amazing works. The prophet asks for God's help as He did in years gone by. More importantly, in God's anger, remember Your wrath. Habakkuk is asking for God's love and compassion as He pours out anger upon Judah when Babylon moves in to conquer them. (verses 1-2) 

Only God can restore life to something that has died. If we are in need of revival, call out to Him. We must be careful to guard our relationship with God. In the same way, the church must guard hers. Since Jesus is Life, He can renew what has drifted away from Him. He can renew the abundant life.

LET IT GROW

Then the prophet turns to praising God in verses 3-15. What does he say?

• God's glory and splendor covers the heavens.
• The earth is filled with His praise. (verse 3)
• The majesty and glory of God are displayed throughout the universe and is as brilliant as the sunrise. (verse 4)
• His awesome power is hidden in His hands as rays of light flash. The sun should remind us of God's power and glory. 
• God delivered the Israelites from the Egyptians and their slavery. Also, the plagues.
• God is eternal and His ways are everlasting. (verse 6)

Can we just take a moment to recognize how awesome, majestic, and powerful our God is? His ways are everlasting. Everlasting means always, eternity, without end. 

So God's mercy, love, and compassion are without end. Now that is comforting, friend. What are you in need of today? God's supply never runs dry.

Father, You have calmed the ragging seas for Peter.

You have loosened the prison bars for Paul.

The plagues only affected the Egyptians, not the Israelites.

God, You are sovereignly in control of all things, so we can trust You.

You have made all things beautiful.

We praise You, Almighty God.

Habakkuk 3

LET IT GLOW

Do you need encouragement? Search for it in God's Word. Listen to what God has to say to you and heed it, obeying it. Folks, our God has all the answers to each of our situations and problems. The Prophet learned this. 

We don't need to spend time seeking to make God talk, for He has already spoken through His Word and Son, Jesus Christ. The sensible thing for us to do is keep silence, listen to Him, and heed what God says. Now there are times that the Holy Spirit speaks to us directly with a specific assignment. Then we are to obey.

In this chapter, we read of Habakkuk's response to God's speaking to him:

1. He prays to God
2. He praises God
3. He trusts in God

What an example for us this prophet is. In the Hebrew language, prayer means intercession; supplication; a hymn.

Habakkuk's prayer is to be a song that is sung triumphantly and with great excitement. Although the prophet knew judgment was coming for Judah, he was not discouraged or defeated. He knew Babylon was going to be destroyed and Israel restored, as Jehovah was glorified through it all.

So be sure to pray, praise, and trust in our God. Even before we can call out in need, God is responding with His answer. (Isaiah 65:24)

It doesn't get any better than that! The God who made the universe loves His children so much that He is concerned about our needs. don't assurme that He is more concerned with the needs of other, more significant, more spiritual people than He is with yours. He looks upon us with that same love, interest, and concern like a mother and her infant. (Is. 49:15)

Are we taking those needs to our Heavenly Father? 

LET IT GROW

What can we learn from verse 2?

• Habakkuk acknowledges that he heard God spoke to him and he heard the content. (verse 2)
• What God said made him afraid for it involved the destruction of Judah. 
• He urges God to go about accomplishing His purposes.
• In His wrath, remember to exercise mercy.

Mercy refers to love, pity, or to be merciful. 

Who doesn't need God's mercy in their life and family? Even in our nation, we need God's mercy.

Habakkuk 2-Part 8

But the LORD is in His holy Temple: let all the earth keep silence before Him. (verse 20)

LET IT GLOW

One reason I enjoy going blackberry pickin' is the quiet morning experience. There is woods around the patch, and I even hear birds singing and see deer. Oh, the mamma deer snorts at its baby, warning my presence. I think how wonderful it is to be there with no distractions at 6 am. (No trucks rolling on the highway, no dogs baking, no radio or tv noise.) Quietness. Isn't it hard for us to keep silent for just 5 minutes?

Our all-powerful God is in His holy Temple and reigns supremely in heaven. And then He spoke to Habakkuk. Therefore, we have assurance of His grace, glory, and coming government. This prophet was changed from a worrier to a watcher, then to a worshipper.

Since God is on His throne, we can rest in the fact that everything is under His is in control. Because idolatry leads to the neglect and rejection of God. (Because idols do not say anything, there is silence in their temple, unless noise is man-made.

LET IT GROW

Let all the earth keep silence before God.

Silence means to hush; hold peace (tongue); be silent; still.

He is calling all of the earth to be still, quiet, at peace before the living God. Right now there is so much noise-protests, confusion, rebellion, and sin. Wouldn't it be something if all on the earth, technology, people, and animals were silent for a day, or even for an hour, maybe 5 minutes? Then we would be able to hear from Almighty God.

Do we take time our of our busy schedule to just sit before the Lord and listen for His Spirit to speak to us? Do we ever have a moment of silence before our God? I think it would be a good practice-sit still and be silent before our God, not praying or talking to Him. Just sitting quietly. I wonder what would happen. Even in our churches, do we take a moment of silence?

We come before You, Holy God and Loving Savior and sit still and in silence before You.

Drunkenness, Violence, and Idolatry

Habakkuk 2-Part 8

LET IT GLOW

Mom always said, "What goes around comes around." She referred to reap and sow concept. How we treat others will be done to us, eventually. 

The prophet named 5 different sins Babylon did to merit judgment from God:

1. Selfish ambition
2. Covetousness
3. Exploitation of people
4. Drunkenness and violence (verses 15-17)

The Bible warns against the evils of strong drink (Prov. 20:1; Rom. 13:13; Gal. 5:21) Drunkenness and sensual behavior often go together. In Scripture, drinking a cup of wine can be a picture of judgment (Jer. 25:15), and nakedness often speaks of devasting effects of military invasion (Is. 47:1-3)

What Babylon did to others, God would do to her. Her land was stripped naked and her blood was shed, just as she had done to Judah. Their soldiers chopped down trees for firewood, probably, and killed the cattle for their food during the war. They had no moral discernment. It was the cup of the LORD's right hand that brought judgment. 

Sounds like you reap what you sow principle, huh? How we treat others will be done to us. So we better be sowing love and respect, for it could come back to haunt us if we don't.

5. Idolatry (verses 18-20)

I admit there was a time in my life when my career was more important than family and God. Finally, God got my attention and showed me, to which I am thankful.

The people of Nineveh had repented and turn away from worshiping idols, but then about 100 years later they returned to idols. So had Judah. 

Romans 1:25 NAS says, For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.)

There it is in black and white-worshiping and serving the creature instead of the Creator is idolatry. As Satan lied to Eve, saying she would be as God if she ate the forbidden fruit, he had previously done so when he was kicked out of heaven (Gen. 3:5). 

Idols are dead substitutes for the Living God. (Ps. 115)

Wiersbe said, "Whatever people delight in other than God, whatever they are devoted to and sacrifice for, whatever they couldn't bear to be without, is an idol and therefore under the condemnation of God."

Famous people can be idols-actors, athletes, politicians, wealthy tycoons. Idols can be things-cars, houses, boats, jewelry, and art. People can make their children and grandchildren their idols, as they refuse to let them serve God away from them. Also, jobs, social position, intellectual ability can all become idols for people to have, worshiping IQ instead of God. 

Albert Schweitzer said, "Anything you have that you cannot give away, you do not really own; it owns you."

Habakkuk 2-Part 7

LET IT GLOW

As God responded to the prophet's questions, we read of His judgment upon Babylon, who took Judah captive and destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple. He names their 5 different sins:

1. Selfish ambition

Covetousness (verses 9-11) There are 3 ways to get wealth: work for it, steal it, or given as a gift, according to Ephesians 4:28. The Babylonians took Judah's land and wealth, as well as articles in the Temple for themselves. Their power and what they coveteth (greed; gain greedily) helped their empire grow and have false security. 

Then God brought on disgrace and shame. Eventually the Babylonians lost their lives and the Medes and Persians conquered them. This was God's plan.

Mark 8:36 asks, For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? 

Christians need to be careful to not focus on material wealth for selfish reasons. What does it gain us if our fabulous houses, luxurious cars, and toys becomes what we live for, yet do not worship God, read His Word, obey His principles?

Are we using our money to help others? To share the Gospel?

3. Exploitation of people (verses 12-14)

The use of bloodshed of innocent victims, prisoners of war, and slave labor to built the Babylonian kingdom profited them nothing. It is all gone today. Museums reveal their marvelous ways.

Verse 14 says, For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.

A day is coming when the Messiah, Jesus Christ, will rule as King over His people during the Millennial reign. He alone is God and is to be worshiped.

Are you ready?

LET IT GO 

Teach us to love You, family, friends, and neighbors.

Help us to keep money in its proper place.

God, You alone are worthy of worship and praise and glory.

Ambition

Habakkuk 2-Part 6

LET IT GLOW

Are we trusting in God's Word (brighter days ahead) and resting in His will?

Not only are we saved by faith but are instructed to live by faith. It is our faith that is the victory which overcomes the world. (1John 5:4) Faith is a lifestyle. It is not puffed up nor depends on our own resources. 

To live by faith means to believe God's Word and obey it no matter how we feel, what we see, or what the consequences may be. (Wiersbe)

Habakkuk knew difficult times were ahead for the Jews in Judah. Their only resource was to trust God's Word and rest in His will. The remnant believed God would rescue them from captivity.

Is God our refuge and strength? (Nah. 1:7)

LET IT GROW

To the godless Babylonians, God would be their judge and punish their sins. The prophet recorded 5 woes (different sins) as a result:

1. Selfish ambition (verses 6-8)
2. Covetousness (verses 9-11)
3. Exploitation of people (verses 12-14)
4. Drunkenness and violence (verses 15-17)
5. Idolatry (verses 18-20)

First, the Babylonians stopped at nothing to acquire wealth and expand their kingdom. (They had hoards of stolen goods while killing the people to get it.) They were warned that one day the owners of that wealth would rise up and collect their due against the Babylonians. The Medes and Persians did just that. (Daniel 5)

Ambition can be a bad or good thing, depending how it is used. Paul had ambition to share the Gospel with others and please God. So are we. (2 Cor. 5:9) 

LET IT GO

Lord, You see into our hearts.

Help us live by faith, trusting in You, Jesus.

May our ambition be to help others come to know Jesus.

Just by Faith

Habakkuk 2-Part 5

Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in Him: but the just shall live by his faith. (verse 4)

LET IT GLOW

Will God judge the ruthless who oppress others? The prophet is asking God. Habakkuk is standing watch on his tower, observing and looking, as well as waiting to hear from his God. After all, God gave him a vision of the Chaldeans conquering Judah. What was going to happen to the bad, mean people?

Habakkuk is giving a vision from the Lord, and to write it down so messengers could run with joy throughout the land sharing it. Judah would not be destroyed, but the Chaldeans would be. He was told to wait for it to happen (took 70 years). 

In our key verse, God contrasts the two-believers and believers, lost and saved, unjust and just, unrighteous and righteous. Those who were not upright (please well, seem good) toward God and His Word.

First, the Chaldeans (Babylonians) were puffed up with pride. Idols were their gods. Though their military was great, God is even greater. In God's timing, they fell to the Persian empire.

This shows us that unbelievers depend upon themselves, their so-called strength and goodness. When facing a Holy God, they will not have a leg to stand on. All will bow before Jesus Christ and declare He is LORD.

LET IT GROW

Second, it is the just (righteous, morally right) who live by his faith (truth, firmness, fidelity, security). The righteous Jew found his righteousness in God, not himself. 

Today, believers are justified by faith in Jesus Christ as Savior. It is His sacrificial blood that makes us right with God, not our works. 

This verse is quoted by Paul three times in the New Testament-Romans 1:17, Galatians 3:11, Hebrews 10:38. It is the battle cry and watchword of the Protestant Reformation in the days of Martin Luther. The righteous one shall love by his faith in Jehovah God.

Where is your faith focus? Is it on Jesus, His Word, His Righteousness?

Jesus, You are our breath of life, our Salvation, our Righteousness.

Jesus, the name above every other name. Jesus the only One who could ever save. Worthy of all our praise. Holy, there is no one like You. There is no other God but You.

Thank You for loving us sinners. Use us for Your glory.

When Waiting Seems Forever

Habakkuk 2-Part 4

LET IT GLOW

Where are you Lord? How long must this go on? The prophet asked, God spoke, he questioned, and then waited for God to answer.

Swindoll tells us to have faith in our Sovereign God, since He:

1. Is able, and I am not;
2. knows what is best, and I do not;
3. sees the end from the beginning, I cannot;
4. should have His way in this, I should not.
5. must be glorified through this, I must not.

We need to let God be God, stand back and wait for God to work.

LET IT GROW

For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry. (2:3)

 Habakkuk was told to write down the vision which the Lord gave him. Then when one read it, they were to run with joy to give the message throughout the land of Judah. The Chaldeans would be destroyed. they were to wait for fulfillment of the Lord's Word.

God will fulfill His Word to us as completely as He did concerning Habakkuk and the Jews. The revelation was for a future time. Jesus Christ said He would return to earth and serve as King. May we be found faithful in the waiting. Sometimes the waiting seems to be too long for us, even forever. But it will come.

Habakkuk 2-Part 3

I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what He will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved. (2:1)

Are you seeking God's will in your life? Do you want to know which way to go, the right decision to make, and how to serve the Lord His way? If so, then follow along with us as we take a deeper look into this small book of prophecy. Let's find out what we can learn from Habakkuk.

First of all, right away the prophet tells us he had a vision from the LORD God. (1:1) The word he uses is see, which means perceive, contemplate, to have a vision of. God showed this man what was going to happen to Judah in the future because of their idolatry and other sins. They had turned away from worshiping Him.

Next, God was going to send the heathen Chaldeans (Babylon) to conquer Judah and destroy the Assyrian World Empire, as well as defeat the Egyptians, then take Judah into captivity.  (Seventy years it lasted, then a remnant returned to Jerusalem to rebuild it.) God fulfills His Word.

We read of Habakkuk asking questions of God, and he got answers.  I detect this prophet desired more than that. Will God do something to intervene? Will He judge those who oppress others? The thing is, this prophet did not know the good news that this would not last forever. So, he was seeking to know more through prayer. 

How did Habakkuk find out answers to his questions for God to answer?

• He is going to climb his watchtower, 
• stand at his guardpost,
• wait to see what the LORD says, 
• and how He will answer my question.

How can we hear God's voice and know His will for us? Blackaby tells us:

Christians habitually seek God's voice through prayer, through His Word, or through His messengers. Sometimes we fail to hear God speak through His activity. Watch for His activity so we know how we should respond and adjust our lives.

We know God is at work because what we see will astound us, and human power and wisdom will not explain it. If things happen that are direct answers to our prayers, God is speaking to us. If we want to hear God's voice, look around to see what He is doing.

As a Christian, God places you as a watchman for yourself, your friends, your family, and your church family. We are to be attentive to what God is saying. He will speak to us in the above ways, plus through the Holy Spirit. He can reveal ways we can help a friend, encourage others, as well as know specific dangers.

Are we listening, watching, attentive to God's activity around us? Are we faithful to His commands? Is our heart ready to obey when God speaks to us? Are we sensitive to the Holy Spirit and His message to us in all times, all locations, and under all circumstances?

LET IT GO

O God, how I need You. Every hour I need You. My One defense, my Righteousness. 

Yes, how we need You, Father God.

Teach us to be still and listen to You speak.

Open our eyes to see Your activity.

Your sheep need You today, Good Shepherd, King Jesus.

Prepare our heart to do Your will, Your way, today, for Your glory.

Father, thank You for giving us a land of the free. Keep us all safe as we celebrate today.

Habakkuk 2-Part 2

LET IT GLOW

Does God keep His Word? Are His promises true? Can we count on it? Habakkuk found out.

Though God is the Creator and Judge of the universe, He takes the time to respond to His servant and let him in on what He's doing. (Evans)

The prophet was willing to wait for God to give him an answer, further instructions. Habakkuk spoke of his utter dependence upon God. And it did come. We don't know how long it was, but it was worth it:

• Habakkuk was told to write down God's answer, so a runner could carry it correctly. The runner was to have joy, not fear, as he gave the message throughout the land. 
• The bitter and sweet message was for an appointed time, not too late or too early.
• The Chaldeans would invade Judah (bitter), yet they would be destroyed in the future (sweet). 
• The end will speak, not lie, though it tarry, wait for it, for it will surely come. God's Word will be fulfilled.

And faithful the Word was, completely fulfilled. After 70 years in Babylon, the Jews returned to Jerusalem to rebuild it. (see Nehemiah)

Hebrews 10:37 says, For yet in a very little while, He who is coming will come, and will not delay. (NAS)

Folks, that teaches us that God keeps His Word. He said Jesus would come again for His people and He will. It is for the appointed time, not too late nor too soon. He will be on time. We can have hope, even when the signs do not show us. We can live through difficult times by faith in Jesus.

LET IT GROW

So at the appointed time, the Babylonian army will invade Jerusalem and Judah. (verse 3) The Babylonian king had an inflated ego, and was without integrity, was arrogant, and never satisfied. (verse 5)

If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. It will not be delayed. (verse 3b)

What are you waiting on God for, dear one? 

The most important message Habakkuk had to share is found in verse 4b, but the just shall live by his faith.

It was not a ten-point answer, nor a long discussion of God's ways. Simply put, Believers are to trust God and follow His instructions in obedience. 

This was a watchword for the Protestant Reformation by Martin Luther. Justification comes by faith in Jesus Christ, not by our good works, when God declares sinners right. Three emphasis is:

1. God's grace, because faith and grace go together,
2. God's glory, although violence and corruption are present. the earth will be one day filled with His glory,
3. God's government, will be one where Christ is King of kings and Lord of lords. (Wiersbe)

It is by the work of Christ on the cross, enduring the pain, living a perfect life, providing His blood as a perfect sacrifice for us sinners that we are justified before a holy God when we put our faith in Jesus.

Three times in the New Testament refers to this verse. See Galatians3:11, Romans 1:17, Hebrews 10:38.

Our God is bigger than our problems. He is the only one who knows how to solve them. He will see us through it.

Habakkuk 2

Has your faith been shaken you up? Remember that God is our Rock, immovable and unshakeable. It seems that Habakkuk's faith has been shaken up.

God's message to Habakkuk was in the form of a vision. It caused the prophet to question or complain that God appeared indifferent to Judah's sin. Instead of revival, God's response was that He was going to send the terrible and dreadful judgment. 

Then Habakkuk responded by questioning how God could use a wicked nation to judge His nation. As the prophet recognized the unchangeable character of God as eternal, sovereign, and holy, the Lord assured him Judah would not be completely destroyed. (Jeremiah 31, 33) The purpose of the Chaldeans was to correct, not annihilate. God was not going to wipe out the Jews.

Are you questioning why God would allow things to occur in your life or the life of loved ones?

Before we look at our key verse above, recall that a watchman on the walls of Jerusalem looked out of his tower for the enemy or a messenger to warn the people. If he did not warn the city of danger coming, then the blood of the people who died was on his hands. (Ez. 3, 33) If he was faithful in warning the city would be saved.

 What did Habakkuk decide to do?  He will:

• stand upon his watch (post, office, observance);
• set himself upon the tower (fortress, defense, fastness); 
• watch (to lean forward; to peer into the distance; to observe; wait for) to see what God would say (speak, command, promise, teach) to him;
• and what he shall answer when he is reproved (correction, rebuke).

In other words, Habakkuk climbed up his watchtower, stood at his guardpost, and waited to see how the Lord answered him. (NLT) 

Prophets were responsible to God for delivering His message to the people. The prophet did not expect to get bawled out because of his questions but would wait patiently for the answer God had and would give. He desired to be in the best position, on the watchtower, to receive God's message.

Do we prepare to hear from God? Do we ponder His reply to our questions? Are we ready to obey? God has an answer, the right answer, to our questions. Will we wait patiently for it? Are we studying His Word and praying faithfully? In the meantime, let us walk by faith, not by sight. (2 Cor. 5:7)

Habakkuk 1-Part 4

LET IT GLOW

What do we do when God answers our prayers in a different way than we prefer or desire? So many times I have prayed for friends and loved ones to be healed of a disease only for God to take them away to heaven. Certainly, that was not my preference, but I had to yield to God's will, not mine.

The prophet Habakkuk asked God some questions but did not receive the answers he was expecting. He was hoping God would send a revival to His people, judge the evil leaders, and establish righteousness in the land of Judah. (The nation would escape punishment and be spared, along with the cities and people.)

However, God had warned His people time and time again but they would not listen. Judah rejected the prophets' words, which was from God, drought and plagues came, along with military defeats. Hearts were hardened instead of repentant, resulting in their turning to false gods. They tried God's patience long enough. (He sent Babylon to conquer Judah and take them into captivity for 70 years.)

What do we do when God doesn't answer or give us for what we asked? How do we react? do we surrender to His will or do we pout, get angry, reject it? Are we willing for God to have His way in our life and in the lives of others?

LET IT GROW

We all know heartbreak bare wounds and scars, as well as walk through sorrow. God knows what it takes for people to come to Him and how much we can take.

Habakkuk asked two more questions of God:

1. Will You let them get away with this forever?
2. Will they succeed forever in their heartless conquests? (verse 17)

He is in reference to the Chaldeans, Babylonians. God had let the prophet see what was going to happen in a vision. Habakkuk left the questions with God, for all questions must ultimately be resolved by Him.

The thing is, folks, do we have faith strong enough for us to wait for the answers?

Isaiah told us in his writings, 60:22, When the time is right, I the Lord, will make it happen. 

So let's wait, not jump in and do something that may not be God's will for us. Oh, how I know that waiting is hard, sucks the wind out of you, throws away joy, if we allow it. God is God and we must yield to Him.

Habakkuk 1-Part 3 

LET IT GLOW

How much longer must this go on? Where are you Lord?

Habakkuk is asking God to hear his prayer and answer. In Judah, the laws were not being enforced, wrongdoers were never corrected, the righteous were frustrated. God had promised to judge sin and the prophet knew it was coming.

Then God answered in verses 5-11, where He tells the prophet:

• Look at the nations and be amazed in marvelous wonder. (verse 5)
• He was going to work in those days, in days he would not believe if God had told him.
• He was going to raise up the Chaldeans (Babylonians), who were a cruel and violent people, astronomers and astrologers.(verse 6)  
• How disheartening it must have been for Habakkuk. Sadly, Judah did not turn around, repenting of sins, and come back to worshiping God only. So it was around 30-40 years later that Habakkuk experienced this.

LET IT GROW

Habakkuk declares God to be:

• everlasting (eternal, ancient, old), 
• O LORD my God, 
• mine Holy One,
• mighty God
• with pure eyes and cannot look upon sin.

He knows who is in charge and proclaimed Him as such. After hearing all of that, Yet, Habakkuk asked more questions of God-surely You don't plan to wipe us out? Will You wink at the evil ones evil? Should You be silent while the wicked ones devour the righteous? (verses 12-13) Will you let them get away with heartless conquests? (verse 17)

After all, the Chaldeans were worse that Judah, who was bad. Why does a Righteous God give free reign to an evil nation that does not give Him glory?

It can be very difficult to accept God's will, sometimes. That is when we trust He knows best and and knows what He is doing. Trust that it will all work out some way, according to God's plan.

We know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28)

Habakkuk 1-Part 2

Behold, ye among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvellously: for I will work a work in your days, which ye will not believe, though it be told you. (verse 5)

LET IT GLOW

You wouldn't believe it if someone told you. Anything like that happen to you? How marvelous and gracious God was to me when He returned my breath of life after turning blue and another time He kept my heart beating when minerals were depleted. Both times I almost died. Yes, our God does marvelous things for His children! I continue to wonder marvelously for what He has done in my life.

Marvellously means be amazed; wonder.

Yet, I have Exodus 9:16 on my desk to remind me-But I have spared you for a purpose to show you My power and to spread My fame throughout the earth. 

That is why I write this blog.

That is God's response to Habakkuk's questions-verse 5.  

It wasn't a question of if, but of when; when God was going to judge His people for their sins and idolatry. Not only Judah was bad, but surrounding nations, too. 

Do you have a story of how God has touched your life, marvelously?

God is at work on a universal scale in order to bring His universal power and influence to bear on the evils that Habakkuk are experiencing at that time. When they get this global perspective, they will scarcely believe it. In their days, they will witness what God is doing and when it is done, recognize He is the One who did it. ((Liberty Bible Commentary)

I just found out the Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade. I have been praying this would happen for years. Truly, God has worked to do this! Glory to His name! I pray no states will allow abortions to be legal.

How it saddens my heart to think how many babies have cruelly been killed because they were not wanted or loved. It was because of sin, adultery and fornication that it was made legal in the first place.

How marvelous, wonderful, and awesome is our God!

Please God change the hearts of women across the nation so they do not rebel against this law. 

Please change hearts so we love babies and life, Father.

We give You glory, Almighty God-You do the impossible!

How Long?

Habakkuk 

LET IT GLOW

How long is this mess going to continue? Do you feel like you are alone standing for justice in the world? Does God seemed to be indifferent? Let's find out what we can do then.

Usually, prophets spoke to the people according to what they heard from God, but Habakkuk spoke to God about what he saw (vision). (verse 1) What he saw caused him deep concern. So the prophet asked God questions:

• How long must I call for help? Violence is everywhere, but You do not come to save. (verse 2)
• Must I forever see these evil deeds? (Verse 3)
• Why must I watch all this misery? Destruction and violence is everywhere. People love to argue and fight. There is no justice in the courts. The wicked far outnumber the righteous, so justice has become perverted.

All around him, Habakkuk saw injustice, wrongdoing, oppression, violence, strife, and conflict. He lived during the time King Josiah, who loved the Lord and His law, reigned in Judah. Then the king was killed and his wicked son Jehoiakim, who did evil in the LORD's sight, reigned. The citizens followed their king's ways. (2 Kings 23)

Sound familiar? Is America in the same predicament?

We all have prayers that have not been answered, unselfish ones. Why does God not answer? Why doesn't God step in and do something? Now would be good.

This praying man did something-he cried out to his God. However, his prayers seemed to go0 unanswered. How long Lord? Why don't you?

Habakkuk decided that God was taking too long to come through. Why do You tolerate wrongdoing? (verse 3)

Tony Evans reminds us some things about God when we are in those situations:

• God alone sees the whole picture.
• He is working out His sovereign plan in the midst of the chaos.
• The Lord decides when to answer our prayers and how best to answer them.
• God is omniscient (all knowing), omnipotent (all powerful), and holy (perfectly righteous in all He does).
• He knows how to run things better than we do.

I don't know about You, but I certainly needed to hear this.

I will walk by faith, even when I cannot see.

I wholly trust in Jesus. Christ alone, Cornerstone, weak made strong, He shed His blood. Through the storm, He is Lord of all.

Jesus, give us strength to carry on with You.
