Paying Taxes and Tithes

N.T.#252   "Paying Taxes and Tithes"

Matthew 22-Part 4

LET IT GLOW

The Pharisees were trying to trap, trick, tempt Jesus (entangle). They sent the Herodians to Him. What did they say to Jesus?

  • First, they called Jesus Master, which means instructor, teacher. (verse 16)
  • We know that Thou art true (not as concealing) or honest,
  • and teachest (to teach in the broad application} the way of God truthfully,
  • are impartial and don't play favorites.
It was true that Jesus was truthful and taught Truth, as well as not showing partiality. He lived and spoke of the way god requires us to walk, which leads to happiness and pleasing God. Also, Jesus was a skillful and faithful Teacher.

Although we read the Truth, do we apply it?

LET IT GROW

Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not? (verse 17)

If Jesus answered yes, He could have been held as a traitor to the people. If He said no, He could have been denouncing the Roman authorities.

Why are you trying to trap Me, you hypocrites? (verse 18)

Jesus knew their discussion was a trap, for they were deceivers. He asked for a coin, whose image was on it, which was Caesar's.

Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God. (verse 21)

Plan and simple, huh? They marveled or were amazed at Jesus' answer. We are to give to meet our civil duty and honor God with what is due Him.

Are we faithful to pay our taxes and tithe in worship?

LET IT GO

Help us be a faithful witness by paying our taxes due and tithe what God asks of us.
