Choosing the Right Path

Jeremiah 40

LET IT GLOW

We learned about events which happened after the fall of Jerusalem. Babylon's King Nebuchadnezzar had  given explicit instructions to his captain of the guard, Nebuzaradan (which I will call Dan for short) concerning Jeremiah-see that he isn't hurt, look after him well, and give him anything he wants. Then Jeremiah was put under the care of Gedaliah, who took him back home. So Jeremiah stayed in Judah among his own people, the remnant that was left to bring in the harvests.

Before that, Jeremiah was among the deportees headed to  Babylon, stationed at a town called Ramah, which was only 5 miles north of Jerusalem. He was bound in chains, shackles, about to be carried away to a foreign land when Dan rescued him. We are not sure how this happened. At any rate, it was not by happenstance that the prophet was released.

Jeremiah's message of captivity and the judgment of God was on Judah had spread to the pagan world. What was Dan's declaration to Jeremiah?

*God brought this disaster on this land just as He said He would.

*These people sinned against the LORD and disobeyed Him.

*I will remove your chains and let you go.

*If Jeremiah want to go with him to Babylon, he was welcome, and would see that the prophet would be well cared for there.

*If Jeremiah did not want to go, he was permitted to say there.

Jeremiah was given a choice as to where to live. In Babylon, Jeremiah would have great comfort and power, but the exiles there hated him. Although, while in Judah, he would face hardship. Considering how the people in Jerusalem hated him too, Jeremiah chose to go to Gedaliah, the new governor at Mizpah. He was given vituals and a reward and let go. In Judah Jeremiah would remain poor and unwanted, but the Judean remnant would know he was not a traitor.

Daily, Jesus gives us a choice to follow Him or go our own way. Following Jesus may not be on any easy path, but it is rewarding spiritually. Emmanuel, God with us, gives us peace and rest on the road less traveled. His presence is worth more than the world could offer. He leads us along fresh adventure, revealing things we don't know. Which path will you choose today?

LET IT GROW

There was a group of rebellious Jews along the countryside that had a leader named Ishmael. (verse 8). They heard about Gedaliah's appointment as governor, whose  ground rules included serving the king of Babylon. (God had been telling Judah this for years.) Ishmael and his followers devised an assassination plot to kill Gedaliah. Now, Johanan found out about this and told the new governor, who didn't take it seriously. He even offered to secretly kill Johanan., but was turned down. We will find out in the next chapter what happened.

Was Ishmael angry that he had been passed over for leadership? After all, he was of the line of David. Do we allow jealousy to reign in our heart?

LET IT GO

There is nothing better than You, Jesus.

How wonderful it is to rest in Your will.

Please give us wisdom as we face uncertain days.

Help us be overcomers, staying in the fight for The Truth.

Bless all who come to study Your Word.

Jeremiah 39

LET IT GLOW

We had a new wall heater installed yesterday. It heated wonderfully, but there was a problem. Before we went to bed, I could smell a touch of gas in the house. It wasn't strong, so we went on to bed. During the wee hours of the morning, I woke up  and smelled gas in our bedroom in the back of the house. Finally, I decided to turn off the new heater, opened the door, and turned on the ceiling  fan. Then I started the pellet stove. (Now, I will admit that I have a blood hound nose that detects any slight odors.) But when my husband got up, he finally agreed there was a leak, so he texted the installer about it. Being a friend at our church, he came out and fixed it. Friends, our loving God watched over us through the night. If the leak had been worse, we could be with Jesus in heaven right now. I said all of that to show how our God is so good to us, even when we may not realize it. Today, we will read of two ways He saved two of His people.

We left Jeremiah in prison for prophesying gloom and doom for Jerusalem if they would not repent of their sins-idolatry and immorality and disobedience. The king and his family would live if they only turned back to God and led the people to do so. But they would not.

Then the bottom fell out. After a year and a half siege, Jerusalem finally fell to the Babylonians. King Zedekiah escaped by night, bud was captured by the Chaldean army in the plains of Jericho, and taken to Nebuchadnezzar. Zedekiah saw his sons and officials killed, The king of Judah was blinded a taken away in chains, shackles. If only he had followed Jeremiah's words from God, this would not have happened.

What else happened?

*Houses of the king and people were burned.

*The walls of Jerusalem were broken down. (verse 8)

*A remnant of poor people were left with vineyards and fields. (verse 10)

*The captain of the guard was given special instructions for Jeremiah's treatment-see that he isn't hurt, look after him well, and give him anything he wants. (verse 12)

*Jeremiah was taken to Gedaliah, a Hebrew puppet governor appointed by Neb to rule over the poor people left in Judah. He took Jeremiah back to his home. (verse 14)

Even though the bottom fell out, God still had His eye on Jeremiah. And so it is with us, a child of God. When we think things can worse, God is still in charge, for He is sovereign.

What a different between Jeremiah and Zedekiah:

Jeremiah was freed, saved because of his faith, treated with respect, as he was concerned for the people. However, King Zedekiah was imprisoned, had fear, was treated with contempt, and was concerned with himself. Which one are we like?

LET IT GROW

Remember that man who rescued Jeremiah from the pit? Well God remembered him, too. (verse 18) It was because Ebed-melech trusted in God, he was given life as a reward. God never forgets His own. Even as He delivered His prophet, He also delivered His lowly servant. He can do the same for you and me, friend. And He has for me, just today!

Isaiah 61:10 says, I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for He hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, He hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.

LET IT GO

You're a good, good Father. That is who You are.

And I'm loved by You. That is who You are.

You are a faithful God. That is who You  are.

Deliverance From The Pit

Jeremiah 38-Part 2

LET IT GLOW

Some of the officials in Jerusalem got permission from the king to put Jeremiah in a dungeon, a pit hole or cistern. It was their intent for him to die there. When people don't like the message, they try to get rid of the messenger. There seemed to be no one who cared about this prophet of God. Except, there was one-Ebed-melech, a foreigner and eunuch, who cared enough to save Jeremiah. So this hero went to the king and asked permission to rescue Jeremiah from death by hunger, the mire and muck. Zedekiah granted his request and sent 30 men with him to help.

How did they get Jeremiah out of his pit? They used rotten rags, probably tied together, making cords, securing them under their armholes. After getting out of his pit, Jeremiah still remained in the court of prison. That is how he was delivered. We read about it in the first thirteen verses. God took care of His messenger because He cared, loved, him.

If we are in a pit, hang on, for God can send an insignificant person to rescue and help deliver us. Hold on, for Jesus is always working around us. Or, maybe you are the one God wants to use to rescue someone. We must keep our spiritual eyes and ears open to their cries for help. Our hope is in Jesus Christ, who delivers us our of our pit of sin and set us on the solid rock. Although we don't deserve it, His mercy is abundant and His love is everlasting, for He is Everlasting Father.

LET IT GROW

This chapter is full of events, isn't it? King Zedekiah met secretly with the prophet in the Temple. He wanted to ask something and wanted the truth. Jeremiah was not so sure it was safe for him because he could be killed. Besides, the king would not listen to his advice. So the king secretly promised him safety.

The message from God for the king was to surrender to Babylon and he with his family would live, as well as the city would not be burned. But the king was afraid of those Jews who were already in Babylon. All would go well for the king if he obeyed and surrendered. If he chose not to do so, then his wives and children would be captured by the enemy's army and the city burnt. The king gave instructions to Jeremiah concerning their conversation-don't tell anyone, lest you die. Sure enough, it happened, officials questioned  Jeremiah, but he told nothing of what happened with the king.

We must not withhold God's truth from others, but we should withhold information that will be used to bring evil on God's people. When someone is treated unkindly or unjust, reach out to that person with God's love. You may be the only one who does.

LET IT GO

Thank you God for sending Ebed-melechs to help deliver me from my pits.

Thank You for sending Jesus to rescue us from our pit of sin and giving us a home in heaven with You.

Dying in a Pit

O. T. #1808  "Dying in a Pit"

Oct. 27, 2020

Jeremiah 38

LET IT GLOW

Anyone feel like you are dying in a pit today? There are so many kinds of pits that we can find our self in-hum-drum pit, self-pity pit, despair, pride, self-will. We may fall into one of those when we take our eyes off of Jesus and wander off the path of His will for our life. There are numerous pitfalls, awaiting for us-financial, marital, job, too much free time, etc. Even well-meaning friends can entice us to go down there. So we have to be alert constantly. Poor Jeremiah found himself down in a pit, which was intended for him to die in. Let's see how he got there.

Jeremiah was a prophet that was fearless and faithful to stand his ground throughout his years of serving God and delivering unpopular messages of repentance and doom. King Zedekiah would have taken good care of Jeremiah, but his government officials wanted to kill the prophet. Those officials became enemies of the prophet and the king was only a puppet as they pulled his strings. They thought Jeremiah's words were that of a traitor and treason and he ought to die. He was unpopular and they thought he was undermining the morale of the army  and the people. Which is most important to us-what others think and say or what God wants, thinks and says about us?

No wonder Judah was in turmoil. Their king agreed with everybody. He listened to Jeremiah's words from God in 37:21 and to the officials, agreeing  the prophet should be killed in 38:5. That is how the king was wishy-washy. Zedekiah could not decide between public opinion and God's will.

Four princely rulers heard Jeremiah's message: those remaining in Jerusalem will die by the sword, famine, or disease. Those who surrender and go with the Babylonians will live, for their reward will be life. They will live! (verses 1-4)

In Billy Graham's devotional, Wisdom For Each Day, we find reassurance:

You aren't where you are by accident; you are there by God's design. Your country, your city, your family, your job or school-God put you there never does anything without a reason. You are where you are by God's sovereign design, and He wants to use you right where you are. This world is not our final home; because of what Christ has done for us we have "an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade-kept in heaven for you." (1 Peter 1:4 NIV) But in the meantime God calls us to be instruments of His love and justice in an unbelieving world. Jeremiah 29:7 says, Seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you... Pray to the Lord for it.

Good words to remember. Are we faithfully serving our God, sharing His love and the good news that Jesus saves us from our sins.

LET IT GROW

The king agreed with the officials and Jeremiah was lowered by ropes into an empty cistern of mud and mire in the prison yard. There he was left to die. He could have died from thirst, hunger, hypothermia, or suffocation if he sank too deeply into the bottom.

Water was collected in them in the winter rainy season and was stored for use during the dry summer. Since the water had been consumed from this cistern, Jeremiah sank into the mud and would have suffocated except for the intervention and used an insignificant person, Ebed-melech who persuaded Zedekiah to change his mind again. (Liberty Bible Commentary)

Were there no friends of Jeremiah around to rescue him from that yucky pit? Perhaps they were too afraid to risk their life to help. Maybe everyone turned against him because of the gloom and doom messages he shared.

Well, thank God there was one. Ebed-melech was an insignificant person, an Ethiopian eunuch, an official in the king's palace. (verse 7) Obviously, he feared God and was courageous enough to approach the king, reporting what had happened to Jeremiah. The king gave him permission to rescue Jeremiah from the pit. Then, the  prophet went back into house arrest. (verses 8-13)

This eunuch later received God's deliverance of his own life and His tribute for his faith. (39:15-18)

Don't think you are insignificant, dear one. Even when we give a cup of water in Jesus' name, we are rewarded.

Do you feel like your life is sinking in mud with no way out? Turn to Jesus. His arm is not too short to pull you out of it.

LET IT GO

You are faithful, God.

You are on our side.

Wishy-Washy

Jeremiah 37-Part 2

LET IT GLOW

Are we one way when we are around believers and another way around others? How about our talk and actions? Are we wishy-washy in our behavior like Judah's king? Find out what is meant by reading further.

Now, King Zedekiah was wishy-washy by nature. He seemed to know in his heart that Jeremiah was speaking the truth from God. However, he was led by the whims of the evil princes who had previously come into power. There were several significant things which happened:

First, the king sent a priest to Jeremiah requesting, Pray now unto the LORD our God for us. (verse 3)

The Word of the LORD, God of Israel come to Jeremiah saying:

*Pharaoh's army return to Egypt, though they came to help Judah.

*Don't fool yourself into thinking the Babylonians are gone for good, for they aren't.

*They will take the city of Jerusalem and burn it with fire.

We know this did occur as the Lord had warned King Zedekiah. (verse 11) Actually, the king, his officials, and the people of Judah did not want to listen to Jeremiah, but they wanted the blessings of his prayers. Know anyone like that? Didn't they want a superficial religion that wouldn't cost them anything? Hmm. God wants a relationship with us, not just giving us what we need.

LET IT GROW

What was Jeremiah's reply, after his scroll had been burned? The Lord's message was the same, for Judah and the king to surrender to Babylon.

So before the Babylonian army returned, Jeremiah decided to leave and go to the land of Benjamin, perhaps to claim his share of the property among his relatives there. But, as he was leaving the city gate, an officer arrested him for treason, which was a false accusation. Jeremiah was beaten and put in a dungeon a pit hole; cistern), remaining there many days. (verses 11-16)

Falwell described this unsanitary dungeon as a waterless cistern, where they let Jeremiah down into by cords to a bottomless pit, so he sank into the mire and left to starve to death.(We find out more detail in the next chapter.)

Then Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah secretly. The king asked Jeremiah if there was a word from the Lord.

You know, Jeremiah could have had enough and gone home, but he didn't. He could have lied and told the king everything was going to be fine, but he didn't. Jeremiah told the king the truth-thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon. (verse 17) Jeremiah knew this was not what the king wanted to hear, but he took the opportunity to ask for better treatment. He wanted to know two things: what crime he had done to the king and the people; where were the king's prophets that told him Babylon would  not attack him their land? Also, Jeremiah asked the king to not send him back into dungeon, for he would die. (verses 18-19)

King Zedekiah did want to hear from the Lord. We have to give him credit for that. Although, he teetered between surrender and resistance. He was too weak a person for he met secretly with the Prophet. He hoped for some better news from God. How desperate he was. The king feared the political ramifications of being caught talking to Jeremiah. (Life Application Study Bible)

How did this chapter end? King Zedekiah sent Jeremiah into a different prison and ordered him to be fed a piece of bread.

LET IT GO

As we hear from Your Word, God, may we be faithful to obey.

Help us not be wishy-washy, influenced by others, but to stand for Jesus.

Suffering

O. T. #1806 "Suffering"

Oct. 23, 2020

Jeremiah 37

LET IT GLOW

We left King Jehoiakim burning Jeremiah's scroll of God's Word. How complacent, insensitive, and evil he had become to the truth. He and his family suffered for this one act-none would be on the throne in Israel/Judah. Jehoiakim died and his son was taken to Babylon. Then their uncle Zedekiah became  king of Judah, by Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon.

Here we read of the siege of Jerusalem in chapters 37-39. What happened in this chapter?

  •  During the time Zed reigned, neither he, his servants, nor the people hearkened to God's Word. (verse 2)
  • The king sent a message to Jeremiah asking for prayer-Pray now unto the LORD our God for us. (verse 3) Would Jeremiah intercede for the people? Probably the king desired victory by the Egyptians so the Babylonian army would leave Judah standing.
  • The Babylonian army temporarily withdrew from Jerusalem when the Pharoah of Egypt's army came there to help the Jews. (verse 5)
  • The Lord's message to the king was that the Egyptians would leave and the Caldeans would come again and burn the city. (verses 7-9) It happened as the Lord had said.

God is never at a loss for means to accomplish His purposes. Matthew 3:9 (Falwell)

It didn't depend on human ability but on God's sovereign judgment. (Tony Evans)

Actually, the kings and people of Judah brought on the disasters themselves. If only they had repented of their sins of idolatry, they would have been spared. But it did not happen.

God gives us opportunities to repent and turn from our sinful ways. How faithful He is. God forgives sin when we are sincere to ask for forgives.

LET IT GROW

Well, it is sad what happened to Jeremiah. He was leaving Jerusalem through the Gate of Benjamin to go to his hometown, but he was grabbed by an officer. He was falsely accused of treason, deserting to the enemy, beaten, and placed in prison, a dungeon, for many days. (verse 11-16)

Are we willing to suffer for the Lord Jesus, our faith, and His Word? We should be. After all, look at how Jesus suffered for us to give us salvation by faith in Him.

LET IT GO

Sweet Jesus, please intercede and forgive America for her sins. We have killed so many innocent babies through abortion and allowed homosexuality to continue without condemning it. We are guilty of allowing idols in our personal lives. We elect evil, rebellious, people in our government leadership. Please give us godly leaders who seek Your will. Your Word and prayer has been removed from our public schools and buildings. Please have mercy on us sinners and prevent evil armies from conquering us.

Lord, raise up believers to stand firm for Your Word and ways. Protect us as we strive to proclaim the gospel and truth.

In the name of Jesus our Savior,

Amen

Paying The Price

O. T. #1806  "Paying The Price"

Jeremiah 36

LET IT GLOW

This chapter actually occurred before chapters 34 and 35. It is the first time we read of the actual recording of Jeremiah's prophecy. As God commanded His prophet to write down the prophecy that God spoke to him. He dictated it to Baruch, his faithful friend and secretary. It was written on papyrus sheets or vellum which were sewn or glued together. Those were stored in long rolls called  scrolls.

It took place during the fourth year reign of Jehoiakim, an evil monarch of Judah. So Baruch read the prophecy in the Lord's house, because Jeremiah was not allowed inside. He read the prophecy in the chamber of Gemariah.

When Gemariah's son, Michaiah  heard it, he reported it to the princes, top officials, meeting in the king's house. They invited Baruch to read it to them and he did so. They turned to each other in fear. Jerusalem was doomed. Babylon was then destroying city after city, closing in on Jerusalem. They had to tell the king. (verse 16) The officials advised Jeremiah and Baruch to hide for their own safety. (verse 19)

Are we willing to read or proclaim God's Word wherever He sends us? No matter the risk to us, we must share the gospel. God will protect us.

LET IT GROW

Now, the officials left the scroll in a scribes' chambers for safe keeping, then went to tell the king had happened. After hearing the news, the king sent Jehudi to get the scroll. He obeyed and began reading it. What happened next caused the king's life to be shortened. With a lack of concern for God's Word and Judah's sin, cut up the scroll with a knife and tossed it into the fire until it was consumed. (verses 22-23)

The officials begged the king to not do it, but he refused. Then he ordered Jeremiah and Baruch to be arrested. But the Lord hid them away safe. (verse 26)

Nothing can stop God's program or will or purpose. It will be done. God instructed Jeremiah to dictate everything again to Baruch. They added, Jehoiakim would have no one sit on David's throne. (verse 30) Jehoiakim's corpse was thrown out to be exposed to the heat of day and frost of night. His son Jehoiachin only reigned as king for 3 months before being taken to Babylon. Then Jehoiachin's uncle Zedekiah replaced him.

What a price to pay for rejecting the Lord.

For ever, O LORD, Thy Word is settled in heaven. (Ps. 119:89) God's Word will stand forever. People may put it aside, say it contains errors, or not trust in it, but that is false. God's Word is truth.

LET IT GO

Jesus, be our defender, comforter, and strength.

To Drink or Not to Drink

O. T. #1805  "To Drink or Not to Drink"

Oct. 21, 2020

Jeremiah 35

LET IT GLOW

To drink or not to drink wine-that is the question.

May I share me experience? I grew up with a father who drank periodically. He would go to a bar, not drinking in our home, then come home drunk. He was not abusive, but I could see the effect liquor had on him. And I saw how it upset my mother. Therefore, I determined to not drink, nor marry a man that did. I wanted a Christian home where the standards of the Bible were lived out.

Before looking at this chapter, lets have a flashback to the time when Kings Jehoiakim  reigned in Judah. There was a group of Jews known as the Rechabites (descendants of Kenites). They followed their ancestors' ways of living-not drinking wine and worshiping God only. Also, they were nomads, not living in houses but tents as a result of staying faithful to their family covenant. The did not plant crops or vineyards either. If they followed these practices, they would live good, long lives. Since the Babylonians were ravaging the countryside, the Rechabites took refuge in Jerusalem.

In verse 1, we read where God sent Jeremiah to the house of the Rechabites. He was instructed to bring them into a side room of the Lord's Temple, where Jeremiah was to offer the Rechabites wine.

We read of their reaction in verses 4-11, which was to be an object lesson for Judah:

  • They kept their vows to a fallible human leader; Israel broke their covenant with their infallible divine Leader.
  • They did not drink, obeying their descendants; Israel refused to obey God and turn from their sins.
  • They obeyed laws with temporal issues; Israel refused to obey God's laws with eternal issues.
  • They obeyed for hundreds of years; Israel disobeyed for hundreds of years.
  • They Rechabites would be rewarded; Israel would be punished.

We often are willing to observe customs merely for the sake of tradition; how much more should we obey God's Word because it is eternal. (Life Application Study Bible)

Do What I Say

O. T. #1804  "Do What I Say"

Oct. 20, 2020

Jeremiah 34

LET IT GLOW

How many times have we heard, "Do what I say, not what I do?" Perhaps we have even said it to our children. But is it the right for us to be? Aren't we supposed to be the good model for our children to follow so they do what is right and do what we say? There is one person which we can do what He says and did-Jesus.

Now we have the events which surround the fall of Jerusalem. Fast forward to the time of King Zedekiah, their last king, in Jerusalem. He can be labeled as a stubborn and rebellious leader. He clung to hope that they could somehow escape defeat by the Babylonians. Jeremiah continued to warn this king to stop resisting and accept God's discipline-go peaceably to Babylon.

Judah had allied with Egypt in attempting to stop Babylon from conquering nations. The Lord sent His words to the king through the prophet. What was the message?

  • Jerusalem would be burned down. (verse 2)
  • Zedekiah would be taken to Babylon and speak face to face with Neb. (verse 3) We read that Zedekiah was blinded then in 52:11.
  • Zedekiah would not die by the sword, but die peacefully and be honored as king of Judah. (verse 4-5) He died in prison in Babylon. Probably he grieved himself to death because his son died by the sword.
  • However, Zedekiah was given a second chance (before judgment came) if he would obey God's command. Judah was to set free the Hebrew slaves. Jews were to be freed after serving 6 years. (Exodus 21:2) They had not been doing this.
  • So the people and officials made a covenant with God in the Temple and freed their Jewish slaves. (verse 10)

LET IT GROW

When the siege temporarily stopped, the people returned to their sin and took back their slaves. (They tried to appease God without a change of heart.) They reneged on the covenant and profaned God's name. (verse 16)

What happened to them? Verse 17 tells us that God sent the sword, pestilence, and famine to remove them from the earth. (verse 17)

Since Judah did not fulfill their part of the covenant, they would pay for their unfaithfulness.

It is better that we not make a commitment or promise to God  than to do so and not keep it. (Numbers 30:2)

God is not mocked. For whatever a person he will also reap. (Galatians 3:6-10)

So we need to be careful what we say, folks. God takes seriously what we commit to Him.

LET IT GO

Thank You for being a promise keeper, Heavenly Father.

Help me do what I say I will do.

Righteousness

O. T. #1803 "Righteousness"

Oct. 19, 2020

Jeremiah 33-Part 3

LET IT GLOW

God had promised to fulfill the Davidic and priestly covenants. We read about it in verses 17-26. Within David's dynasty, one from his family would always be on the throne in Israel (2 Sam.23). In Numbers 25, Israel turned to Baal worship, but the priest stopped it and his family was promised a priesthood of peace. Those promises were as certain as day and night, stars, and sand grains.

What is the good thing God promised Israel? (verse 14) He would raise up a Branch of Righteousness (Jehovah Tsidkenu) and The LORD our righteousness (justice, moral virtue, rightness) of the line of David, a King who will reign in righteousness. (verses 15-16). Jesus Christ was of the lineage of David through His mother Mary. He secured His people through His own sacrifice on the cross as Savior. The first time Jesus came as the Messiah; the next time He comes as king. One day Israel will recognize the truth of this, when He comes the second time to earth.

LET IT GROW

We cannot achieve righteousness on our own. Isaiah 64:6 tells us all our righteousness is as filthy rags.

The word filthy refers to a woman's period; soiling.

Folks, we cannot earn righteousness, nor work to get it or keep the Law; it is undeserved and unmerited. It is obtained when we have faith in Jesus Christ. (Romans 3:21-22) We submit to His righteousness.

Faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness. (Gen.4:9)

His strong faith in God persuaded him that what He had promised He was able to perform.

God kept His promises to Abraham and kept his son alive by providing a ram for the sacrifice instead of Isaac. Does God see our faith?

Are we putting on the armor of God-His breastplate of righteousness? How is our heart?

LET IT GO

Let go of unbelief and trust Jesus.

Jeremiah 33-Part  2

LET IT GLOW

We have the assurance that when we call upon God, He show us great and mighty things, remarkable which we do not know.

What else do we learn about our God Jehovah?

  • He has anger and fury against those of wickedness.
  • He can hide His face as He did from Jerusalem.
  • He brings health and can cure.
  • He gives abundance of peace and truth. (verse 6)
  • He causes captives to return and rebuilds. (verse 7)
  • He is able to cleanse and pardons all iniquity and transgressions,  sinning against Him. (verse 8)
  • We can bring to Him joy, glory, and honor.
  • All will see the good He does for His people.
  • He gives peace and prosperity to His children, resulting in them trembling in awe. (verse 9)
  • The LORD is good.
  • His mercy endures forever.

God's grace is seen here. Jerusalem did not deserve it, nor do we. He pardons our sins and showers us with love. He is ready to answer our prayers. (Matthew 7:7) We must ask and humble ourselves, then obey God.

Forever God is faithful. Forever God is good.

Oh, give thanks unto the Lord for He is good. His mercy endures forever. (Psalm 136:1) The Jews sang it as they returned from Babylon and after the foundation of the Temple was laid. (Ezra 3:11)

LET IT GROW

What are we supposed to do according to verse 11? We are to sing the Lord's praises with joy and honor to Him. We are to bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the Lord.

Do we give as an offering praises to Jesus? Do we enter His gates with thanksgiving in our heart?

LET IT GO

Worthy of worship, worthy of praise, worthy of love and devotion; worthy of all the glad songs that we sing; worthy of all of the offerings we bring.

Father, You are worthy, Father Creator, worthy of worship and praise. Savior, Sustainer, worthy and wonderful, worthy of worship and praise.

Great and Mighty Things

O. T. #1801  "Great and Mighty Things"

Jeremiah 33

LET IT GLOW

Is God rejoicing over us seeing our faith grow, and obedience flowing? Are we faithfully serving Him where He has planted us?  Do others know we are Christians? Jesus gave His whole heart and soul to provide salvation for us as a gift.

While Jeremiah was still in prison, God spoke to him again. No bars  or locks can confine Him. (Paul's sweetest epistles came when he was imprisoned.)

Who brings relief to the captives?

*The LORD (Jehovah, Self-Existent or Eternal), the first mention is found in Genesis 2:4; LORD is used 20 times in this chapter. How important is it?                                                                                *The Maker (use, fulfill, provide) who formed and established heaven and earth.

*The God of Israel;

 *The LORD of Hosts;

*The Branch of Righteousness.

LET IT GROW

Call unto Me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which  thou knowest not. (verse 3)

When we call on God, He will answer us. It may be yes, no, wait. He is willing to show us great (noble, high, exceeding, much) and mighty (abundant, plenteous, exceedingly) things.

It is one thing to believe God could perform a miracle in the Bible, or a thousand years ago, or even in the life of a friend; it is quite another matter to wholeheartedly believe God can do anything He chooses to do in our lives! Ask God what far more things He wants to do through our life. Be prepared to respond in faith and obedience to what He tells you. (Blackaby)

Then watch Him do it.

LET IT GO

Nothing is too hard or difficult for You, my God.

You are amazing and awesome, Jesus!

Where Are You Planted?

O. T. #1800 "Where Are You Planted?"

Oct. 14, 2020

Jeremiah 32-Part 4

And they shall be My people, and I shall be their God. (verse 38)

LET IT GLOW

We have several old trees on our farm. They have deep roots. I have seen some when a high wind uprooted few. Although they had deep roots, they could still be moved. Are we like those trees? Can God uproot us when He wants?  Are your roots so deep that you will not be planted elsewhere?

Do you desire a life-changing Word from God today? I surely do. We found previously that He desires for us to be His people and for Him to be our God. (verse 38)

Also, God gives us one heart and one way so we fear Him forever. (verse 39)

Next, God said He would make and everlasting (eternal; without end; always) covenant (a compact, made by passing between pieces of flesh). What does God say He will do for Judah?

  • not turn away from them;
  • do them good;
  • put fear (reverence) their hearts; a desire in their hearts to worship God.

Jeremiah had already declared that nothing is too hard for God. We know that God keeps His part of the covenant. His Word to Judah is us. Jesus is our new everlasting covenant. When He is  our Savior, we have a new heart, His Spirit of love, and mercy to endure. Jesus is our one way to godliness. So, are keeping our part? Are we giving our heart fully to Him? Are we trusting Jesus completely?

God's mercy endures forever. He never leaves nor forsakes us. His plans will not be stopped. His plans are to prosper, and give us hope. Jesus is our hope of eternal life.

Am I the only one who needed to hear this today?

LET IT GROW

Now look at verse 41. What are the two things God says He will take delight in doing? He will rejoice over His people and doing them good. He will plant ( fasten, fix) them in the land with His whole heart and whole soul. God can plant us where He wants us. Are we planted where He wants us to be? Is our heart planted, fixed in Him?

LET IT GO

Take my whole heart and use it for Your glory, Father.

Use my life for kingdom work.

Obeying God

O. T. #1798 "Obeying God"

Oct. 13, 2020

Jeremiah 32-Part 2

LET IT GLOW

A year before Jerusalem fell under siege by Babylon, King Zedekiah imprisoned Jeremiah. He was in prison because of his prophesying that God would give the city and its king to Nebuchadnezzar. The siege lasted for 18 months into the tenth year of Zedekiah's reign when Jerusalem finally fell.

Then, again God spoke to Jeremiah, telling him what to do next, as an object lesson that God would not destroy His people completely:

  • Jeremiah's cousin, Hanamel, would ask Jeremiah to do an unusual thing-purchase (redeem) a plot of his family's land in his hometown of Anathoth, while Jeremiah was still in prison.
  • Jeremiah was told to purchase that land; he obeyed, and purchased it for a specific price. (The price was low, so it was probably a little field of little.)
  • One deed was sealed and witnessed, then placed in a pottery jar to preserve it.

What good would this do Jeremiah? Jeremiah had little money, after all. It was God's will and word. This illustrated that people would own property again in this land, buying, selling houses, fields. God kept His promise and it happened. Jeremiah prayed, expressing his faith and confidence in God. He willingly used his money for God's glory.

LET IT GROW

God answered Jeremiah's prayer in verse 27: Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?

Nothing can hinder nor defeat God's plans. He cleansed Jerusalem and the Temple with fire, for Judah had altars to false gods there. Judah's punishment would be complete. Then God reestablished His chosen nation of Israel.

Is there any thing to hard for God to do in our life? No. He is sovereignly in control of all things, for He is God. This should encourage our faith, remove all doubts, and see us through difficulties. Nothing unforeseen can hinder the fulfillment of the promises of God.

LET IT GO

Nothing is too hard, difficult, nor great for God.

Nothing is Too Hard For Our God

O. T. #1797  "Nothing is Too Hard For Our God"

Oct. 12, 2020

Jeremiah 32

LET IT GLOW

In verses 16-25, we read of Jeremiah's prayer. He recognizes God as:

  • Creator (El Elyon)of the heavens and earth. (Abraham in Gen.14) (verse17)
  • The Creator who used His great power and outstretched arm.
  • There is nothing too hard (difficult;wonderful; great) for God.(Abraham -Gen 18)
  • He shows lovingkindness to thousands. (verse 18)
  • He brings the consequences of sin of one generation to the next.
  • He is the Great (exceedingly, noble, great in any sense).
  • He is the Mighty God (El Shaddai).
  • He is the LORD of Hosts (Jehovah Tsebaioth), who commands an army of angels, heavenly soldiers.

These are the name (position; honor; authority; character) of God that Jeremiah used in his prayer. He praised and adored his God by giving Him glory. God can do whatever He wills for He is sovereign. He is a God with universal command. He shows great mercy. So we should pray the same way, dear child of God.

LET IT GROW

Therefore, there is nothing too hard, too difficult, too great, nor too wonderful that God cannot do. What are you needing God to do in your life? When you pray, recognize one of God's characteristics. This shows His authority over us.

What are some of the great things God did in the Bible? He created man and woman, our universe, parted seas, healed sick, opened prison doors, fed thousands, and rose from the dead.

Is anything too hard for Him?

LET IT GO

You can do anything and everything, God.

Are You Ready For a Trip?

O. T. #1796 "Are You Ready for a Trip?"

Oct. 9, 2020

Jeremiah 31-Part 4

LET IT GLOW

A few weeks ago, we took a much needed weekend trip. We had not gotten away all summer. We planned what we would do and where we would go, but not on a schedule. What a relaxing time for my husband and I. Israel was told to get ready for their trip. Read on to find out where.

Isn't it hard to comprehend that God loves us with an everlasting love? His consistency does not change, even though our circumstances may. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever! We only need to allow His love flow through us.

We see God's love for Israel when He redeemed them from the grip of Babylon. (The Medes and Persians conquered Babylon.) He used King Cyrus to send the Jews back to Jerusalem.

What instructions does God give Israel for that time? Look at verses 21-22.

  • Set up signposts to mark your trip home.
  • Get a good map.
  • Study the road conditions.
  • The road out is the road back.
  • Come back to your home towns.
  • He will create a new thing in this land. (The Message)

What a special grace God was going to show Israel. After their change of heart during the 70 years of being in a foreign country, a remnant would be allowed to  return home again. This is what they had to look forward to. Probably most of the returnees were the next generation, so they did not know the way back home.

LET IT GROW

When Israel finally repented of their sin, they would turn back to worshiping God. After being ashamed of their sins and  having a change of heart what would they say to the God of Israel?

Now put me, trained and obedient, to use. You are my God. (MSG, V. 18)

Are we wanting to be used by God for kingdom work? Then we must repent of our sins, turn back to God with an obedient heart. His mercy is never failing and love is eternal. God forgives our sin, for He is faithful and just and cleanses us from all unrighteousness.

LET IT GO

Return and follow Jesus.

Have You Ever Wanted to Kick Yourself for Your Stupidity?

O. T. #1795

Oct. 8, 2020

Jeremiah 31-Part 3

LET IT GLOW

God will show His everlasting love and lovingkindness when He brings back Israel/Judah to Jerusalem for  rebuilding. God redeemed them and paid the ransom for them (from Pharoah and Nebuchadnezzar). What joy and singing and rejoicing there must have been as the Jews rebuilt everything. There was hope for their future, for their children would come again to their land. (verse 17)

Israel, of the 10 northern tribes, is still God's son, His darling child, according to verse 20, NLT. He often punished them, but still loved them. That's why God longed for them and had mercy on them. (verse 20) Isn't that the way parents are? Because you love your child, you discipline them so they learn to do what is right.

LET IT GROW

How will Israel respond in verses 18-19?

  • Admit that God disciplined them like a calf that needs training for the yoke. (wild)
  • They would desire God to turn them to Him and restore them.
  • They recognized God alone is the Lord their God.
  • They admitted that they had turned away from Him.
  • They were sorry for it all.
  • They could kick themselves for their stupidity!
  • They were thoroughly ashamed of all they did in their younger days.

Yes, there have been times that I could kick myself for making the wrong decision. Now I realize how  stupid I was. Regrets can eat us alive. The answer is to confess our sins to Jesus and get forgiveness.

 LET IT GO

Thank You Jesus for Your love and forgiveness.

Coming Home With Joy

O. T. #1794 "Coming Home With Joy"
Oct. 7, 2020
Jeremiah 31-Part 2

LET IT GLOW

The everlasting love of God shows lovingkindness
to His children. His mercy never ends, lasting eternally.

Jeremiah sees into Israel's future and records it in this
chapter. We read what the God of Israel will do for
His beloved children after 70 years of captivity in verse
11.
For the LORD hath redeemed Jacob, and ransomed
Him from the hand of him that was stronger than he.

Redeemed means ransom; release; preserve.

God released Israel from their Babylonian captivity.
They were not strong enough to do it themselves.
Here are other verses which speak of His redeeming
us.
Isaiah 44:22; Psalms 49:15, 103:4,107:2; Titus 2:14

Another time God redeemed His children occurred
when the Hebrews' firstborns did not die when they
were under the blood, in Egypt. Also, when Pharaoh
released the whole tribe.

Jesus is our Redeemer who was our substitutionary
ransom payment of the blood sacrifice as the Lamb
of God.
Is Jesus your Redeemer, dear one? Accept His free
gift of salvation today and He will be.

LET IT GROW

We had been away 17 years when the Lord opened
the door for my husband to pastor only 10 miles
away from our hometown and home church (and my
family). What joy and excitement and expectations
we had! The sacrifices we had made in order to
follow Jesus were worth it after all.

Now, how was Israel going to act when they came
back home to Jerusalem?
  • happy and dance with tambourines (v. 4)
  • plant vineyards and eat from their own gardens (v. 5)
  • sing with joy (v. 7)
  • shout out praise and joy (v. 7)
  • tears of joy will stream down their faces (v. 9)
  • they will walk beside quiet streams on smooth paths                                                                and not stumble (v. 9)
  • they will come home and sing songs of joy on the hill.                                                                 of Jerusalem (v. 12)
  • they will radiate because of the Lord's good gifts of                                                          abundant crops and healthy flocks and herds (v. 12)
  • life will be like a well watered garden
  • all their sorrows will be gone and turned into rejoicing                                                               (v. 12)
  • their priests will enjoy abundance (v. 14)

LET IT GO

Nobody loves me like You love me, Jesus.
I stand in awe of Your amazing ways!
I worship you as long as I am breathing!
Oh, what a song to sing!
Fill us with the joy of Thy salvation!

Everlasting Love

O. T. #1793  "Everlasting Love"
Oct. 6, 2020
Jeremiah 31
The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have
loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness
have I drawn thee. (verse 3)

LET IT GLOW

Previously, we learned about a glorious restoration of Judah promised
by God. We know this happened 70 years later when King Cyrus
released the remnant of Jews to return to Jerusalem. Jews from Israel,
Judah, other clans and tribes returned home.
Fast forward to 1948, Israel was established as a nation again. However,
the Jews do not acknowledge Jesus as the Messiah. They will during His
Millennial reign as King.

In this chapter we learn about another glorious promise-a new covenant.
This promise was one made with Israel and Judah. They broke the Mosaic
Covenant through disobedience-only worship God and not idols.

Hope would be restored in Israel. (Judah was renamed Israel.)
Why was God making a new covenant with Israel?
  • He desired to be the God of all the families of Israel. (v. 1)
  • He wanted them to be His people (a tribe, a flock, a nation).
  • The survivors would be blessed and find rest (to settle quiet, find ease).                                    (v. 2)
  • God loved them with an everlasting (eternal, without end, always) love.                                   (v. 3)
  • With lovingkindness (favor, mercy, kindness) God drew them to Himself.                                (v. 3)
MSG says verse 3 this way: Israel was out looking for a place to rest, met God
out looking for them! God told them,"I've never quit loving you and never
will! Expect love, love, and more love!

Oooeee! We have a love that never ends, is always, and eternal, that is for you and me.
God's love is that way. Just stop and let it soak in, friends. Our Heavenly Father's love
for us will always be there in His heart and mind. He will never leave us. We can count
on Him. People that are our friends or our family may leave us, treat us ugly, or seem
unlovable toward us, our God will not.
Do you know this kind of love? You can when you ask Jesus to be your Savior.

LET IT GROW

A day would come when the watchmen stationed upon the mountains
to proclaim the festivals would shout, "Come, let us go up to Jerusalem to
worship the LORD our God." (verse 6)

After their rebellion and judgement of God was complete, Israel would
go back to the old time religion, the way Moses said to do. The Jews
would encourage their neighbors to join them, also.

Are we encouraging our neighbors to come along with us to worship
services? Do we share the good things our God has done for us?

LET IT GO
Come and worship the Everlasting Father who has an everlasting love for us.
His lovingkindness is available to all who believe Jesus is Savior and Lord.

Restoration

O. T. #1792 "Restoration"
Oct. 5, 2020
Jeremiah 30
And ye shall be My people, and I will be your God. (verse 22)

LET IT GLOW

In chapters 30-33, Jeremiah speaks of  the future for Israel and
Judah-a future after the 70 year captivity and the Millennium
reign of Christ. It will be a time of physical and spiritual
deliverance.

The promises of hope involve:

  1. The captives will return to their Promise Land  (verse 3)
  2. Strangers will no more enslave God's people so they shall                                                     serve the Lord; Christ the Messiah (a descendant of David)                                                      will be their king. (verses 8-9)
  3. God will bring destruction in their enemies. (verses 10-11)
  4. God would heal their wounds. (verses 16-17)
  5. Restoration includes buildings (verse 18), people (verse 19),                                                                     and rulers (verse 21).
  6. God will be their God and they will be His people. (verse 22)

What a restoration! Jerusalem was rebuilt by the leaders Ezra, Nehemiah,                                          and Zerubbabel and the people.
Christ will restore His kingdom as He reigns as king.

Does your faith in God need to be restored, dear one? Do you have
relationships that need restoring?
Turn to Jesus. He can restore you to a right relationship.
with God, as Psalms 23:3 says.

LET IT GROW

Then we will His people and He will be our God.

The heart is the main thing God looks at and requires.
(Matthew Henry)

He places that longing in our soul. His Spirit fills that
void. Does Jesus have a hold on you? He can set us free
from strongholds. It is the grace of God that keeps us.

LET IT GROW

Father, will You restore our faith when it wavers.
Will you restore our relationship with You and
others?
Keep Your children near to the heart of God.

Being Set Free

O. T. #1791 "Being Set Free"
Oct. 2,2020
Jeremiah 29-Part 4

LET IT GLOW

Did you know there is a word that is used 6 times
in this chapter? Now that should definitely get our
attention, don't you think? Do you know what the
word is?
It is captivy, found in verses 14,16, 20, 22,
28, and 31. It is interesting that 3 different Hebrew
words are used here, but they all mean the same-
exiles(carried away).

Websters Dictionary defines captives as those held
under the control of another but having the appearance
of independence; captivity is the state of being captive.

These captives or exiles, were taken away to Babylon.
Their false prophets said it would only last a couple
of years. However, Jeremiah's letter to them told the
exiles to make the most of their time in Babylon, for
it would last 70 years.

Friend, is there anything holding you captive? Jesus
said in Luke 4:18 that he came to set free the captives.
When we turn over to Jesus those things that keep us
from enjoying the abundant life, He sets us free from
the stronghold it has in us. So many times it is the
attitude toward something or someone.

LET IT GROW

Do you recall those 3 Hebrew boys that were held
in captivity in Babylon? They were thrown into
the fiery furnace because they would not worship
the idol, golden image.  But Jesus was in the fire
with them and they did not die. In fact, they came
out not smelling like smoke. Now that is something!

Is our faith strong enough to say that if Jesus does
not rescue us, we will still serve Him?

LET IT GO
Break the chains of sin that hold us captive, Jesus.
Keep our faith in You strong, even while we are
in the fire for standing up for Your Word.

When Does God Hear Our Prayers?

O. T. #1790 "When Does God Hear Our Prayers?"
Oct. 1, 2020
Jeremiah 29-Part 3
And then shall ye call upon Me , and ye shall go and
pray unto Me, and I will hearken unto you. And ye
shall seek Me, and find Me, when ye shall search for
Me with all your heart. (verses 12-13)

LET IT GLOW

Here it is friend, words for such a time as this from Joni
Eareckson Tada. She has spent about the last 50 years of
her life in a wheelchair due to being a paraplegic. What
insights she has.

In her devotional book, Diamonds in the Dust, Joni says:
Because God is love, His plan can only be loving. Because
God is good, His intentions for you are of the highest good.
Because He is the Lord of Hope, His purpose is to always
give you hope. He can never be (or do) less than He is.
God can only permit in your life those trials that, with His
grace, you are able to handle. That includes everything from
emotional pain to physical peralysis. And this is why you
have the assurance that His plans only mean spiritual
prosperity for you and a hopeful future.

Isn't that good?
Now read our key verses. What is it that God says He
will do?
He will hearken (hear, listen, regard) when we pray and
He will be found when we seek and search for Him.

What a comfort to us. We have the assurance that the
Creator of all things and Sovereign Lord loves us so much
that He will listen to our requests, cries, and utterances shall be
available to us, His children.

Even when we can't put into words our heavy burdens, the Holy
Spirit interceeds for us. He makes intercession for the saints
according to the will of God. (Romans 8:26-27)

So don't hesitate to pray, dear one. Our loving Heavenly Father
listens and hears us.

LET IT GROW

Now friend, God's hearing us is conditional. What is required
of us in order for God to hear our prayers? We find the answer
in verse 13:
  • When we seek Him. Seek means to search out (by any method,                                   specifically in worship or prayer); ask; beg; inquire; request.
  • When we search for God. Search means to tread frequent; usually                                     follow; to seek or ask; to worship; inquire; question.
  • When we seek God and search for Him with all our heart.

In order to find God and have Him hear our prayers, we must do so
wholeheartedly. We must commit our hearts to the Lord Jesus 24/7.
We worship and obey Him through our day-to-day walk with Him.
He is ready to communicate with us and even reverse our circumstances.
It is more than Sunday church attendance, tapping our feet to the music,
hearing a sermon, and amening it. (Tony Evans)

Are we seeking God with all our heart? Are we diligently searching for
His will so we can do it?
When we do, we will enjoy the blessings of finding God,
and having our prayers answered.

LET IT GO
Thank You Father for hearing our prayers and answering them according to
Your will.
How loving You are!
Keep us seeking You with all of our heart.
Please all who read this today.
Fill with hope.
