Acts 23
LET IT GLOW
Under guard at night they took Paul to Caesarea, the Roman headquarters in Judea. He was highly protected by soldiers accompanying them. A letter had been sent to Felix the governor:
- It identified Paul as a Roman citizen, so Felix was obligated to hear a trial.
- Paul was not guilty of violating any Roman law. (verse 9)
- The Jewish subjects were angry enough to kill Paul, which made their dispute a state matter with significant political implications. Paul was under protective custody.
Felix was going accepted the case, to hear from Paul and his accusers from Jerusalem. Paul had not been charged with a crime.
LET IT GROW
Tertullus was a skilled attorney, more a public speaker than expert in the Roman law. In chapter 24, we
read of 3 charges against Paul:
- Paul was a world-renowned troublemaker. (verse 5)
- He was a leader of a dangerous, anti-Roman cult.
- Paul tried to descerate the Jewish temple. (verse 6)
Paul faced a trial before a corrupt ruler. He knew that this path led to Rome, not to freedom.
