Safety and Security Amidst Caos

Zephaniah 1

LET IT GLOW

This prophet begins with his genealogy, which goes back 4 generations to King Hezekiah of Judah. Zephaniah means Yahweh has hidden or protected.

Not only was King Josiah's father Amon wicked, but his grandfather Manasseh, too. That heritage of wicked kings helps explain the idolatry that plagued Judah when Josiah inherited its throne in 640 BC.

This chapter records the Lord explaining why His judgment was coming, known as The Day of the LORD. Not only were the kings bad, but Judah's priests, along with pagan priests, led worship of Yahweh while bowing before pagan gods. (verses 4-6) What an abomination!

Probably, Zephaniah's prophesy began before Josiah's reform began. It was the reading of the Book of the Law which resulted in false priest being abolished, people repenting, pagan altars and idols destroyed.

LET IT GROW

We had an unwelcomed guest around 2:30 on this Saturday morning. He was upset, too, leaving his perfume behind. Probably because I have started bringing inside the cats' water and food. I had to turn off our window air conditioner since it was so strong. I threatened to get the gun, but my husband asked if I was ready to face the consequences of meeting a skunk. Guess I will try spraying vinegar under our window. Read that it works. If not, the stink can't be any worse.

According to verses 2 and 3, destruction was coming, wiping out the people, animals, birds, and fish. Not even a cruise liner could rescue those destined to perish. (Tony Evans)

So I looked for some encouragement and landed in Proverbs.

But whoso hearkeneth unto Me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.(Prov. 1:33)

If we listen to the LORD, we will live securely. The choice is ours. We don't have to go it alone. Choose God's wisdom and not rebellious independence. Even if His Words to us are painful for the present, it will keep us from greater pain in the future. Peace comes as we obey.

LET IT GO
